Actually Islam has progressed with the times, due to so much criticisms.
But for most of all history it was a very coercive and violent religion.
In the modern times, there are two major types of Islam interpretation:
1.) Modern -- more open and does not punish their believers or force their beliefs to others
2.) Archaic /Old-- punish every one who does not obey, and must force their beliefs.
The Archaic way has been implemented for thousands of years, though there are still very few countries/groups that implement it this way though not as strict as before, such as : Afghanistan, Saudi, Afghanistan and many African countries.
Unfortunately, even the moderate and modern Islamic countries have people/groups who implement the Archaic ways of Islam. This is what the west and the whole world is afraid of.
