    Originally RV 554, believed to have been composed for the Pietà, was scored for violin, oboe and organ. Below the title, the composer later added: ‘or 2 violins and hautbois’. Merely a change of instrumentation, so it has the same RV number.
    At another time, Vivaldi wrote on the lowest staff: ‘This for wanting to change the oboe to cello.’ There he notated the new cello part, functionally identical to the oboe, but more in line with his own idiomatic treatment of the cello.
    Occasionally, he left the part blank, I suppose because he considered the lower register unsuitable (melodic line over arpeggiated passages). Modern interpreters have followed their own course, having a ripieno violin take up the part, or barging ahead with the cello, which they do here.
    The version with cello is catalogued RV 554a. Technically it can also be played as a concerto for two violins and cello.

    Solo una volta ho sentito una Toccata e fuga per organo di Vivaldi! Non sarebbe una cattiva idea riproporla nel canale Del Vivaldi! Mi è piaciuta moltissimo! Penso che, se non sbaglio, da qui, deve avere ispirato J.S. Bach le ( sue) fughe.

    Love how the bassline randomly goes from bassetti violins to continuo at 8:46. The extra overlap layer pushes momentum in a uniquely Vivaldian way.

    Me encantan estas combinaciones instrumentales inusuales de Vivaldi; mi mayor interés siempre son aquellos conciertos donde emplea instrumentos de tecla como los conciertos con órgano o el RV 555 con dos clavecines.
    Lamento mucho que Vivaldi no se haya interesado mas en el clavecin como solista, tengo que conformarme con lo poco que dejó y con las transcripciones de Bach.

    Wow, I didn't know that interesting information about the reason why this concerto is listed as 554a. Thanks again! Another concerto listed as *a variant is RV 562a, I love the performance played by the Orchestra Antonio Vivaldi.

      In that case, there many manuscripts, all copies, some of which have come to light recently. The first version RV 562 was "per la Solennità di S. Lorenzo". The second version RV 562a with added timpani was played for the centenary of the Schouwburg theater in Amsterdam in 1738. I have no useable manuscript for either version at the moment.

    Is the edition of this piece, that was used for this recording, available in print or download? You solved some problems that occur in the available editions on IMSLP and in print...

      It is the performers' own edition. Not available, but you can study it and make your own I suppose!

    O órgão ora alternando, ora em eco, ora como uma sombra sonora, e assim alternam e se interam violino, celo e órgão. Intenso e contrastante o 1o mov.; 2omov. Vem a calmaria Vivaldiana, a gondola balança compassada, e segue no corredor ondulante do luar refletido no Lido.

    Purtroppo per me... la solennità dell'Organo,il calore del Violoncello,la Luce siderea del violino, e quale altro strumento che vi è... sono sovrastate da una Tecnica raffinatissima Complimenti ma solo per quest'ultima Che voto darebbe Vivaldi !?/ciao

    La straordinaria scuola musicale Veneta ha nel Prete Rosso una punta di diamante purissima! Non per niente le incommensurabili e inimitabili scuole musicali italiane, diciamolo pure in "politicamente scorretto" (ma storicamente corretto), furono scopiazzate (anche malamente) e saccheggiate dagli autori tedeschi...i quali, tutti compresi, godono solo di una vergognosa "Buona Stampa" e nulla di più!
