Congratulations. This is a great layout. You've managed to squeeze a lot of track into what can be a small space for HO. A lot of fun playability. Love all the mountains.
This is a very clever use of a 4x8 area. It's deceptively simple, packing so much into a small space without being too complex. A nice, interesting long continuous run too. And only 4 points/turnouts! Great scenery too. That, combined with the nice long circuit-run gives the feel that the trains are actually going places. And that can be hard to do on a small layout. Congrats! -Martin
Yes, I don't like the boring flat layouts. I like scenery layouts the most - even though it is 1 track you can only really control one train properly at a time. I find if you have less points you have less derailments!
............... I believe you've done a remarkable job.... I like the Mountain gaps.... I like the multi-levels very much.... the sunlight doesn't bother me..... I think it adds a little something good to it ...what I would like to mention though is your transitions.... I think that you could do a whole lot more if you start thinking about the distance between your grass or gravel and the transitions between the two.... you know.... little areas...between the green and brown....with different tones of colors transitioning between the two...places with a little dirt color... a little bit of grass ....and then a little more .... gradually....until you have a full amount of grass... you did a beautiful job with the trees ...and I honestly believe this is one of the better setups I've seen on RUclips........... and I thank you are probably at a point where you put so much work into it you can't think of what else there should be to do but I'm telling you weathering is next transitions you don't want any straight lines you want things to flow outside of that you've done remarkable work .......really have .....my hat's off to you...
I'm a beginner to model railroads, is it possible to share the basic design without all the scenery? I know you mentioned its a figure 8 but seem much longer? Its really a very clever and beautifully done layout.
You've really got me interested in that small Fleischmann engine. I was wondering what would be it's smallest radius, would it do smaller than 18" radius? Have you thought about doing a series of videos for a layout from start to finish? I glued down the cork road bed on 1"high density foam supported by 1x2" pine frame yesterday. This is my first 8x4 layout. All My track is Peco/ Atlas flexible track with all Peco points from other layouts. Hence the reason for gluing it down. I have been building layouts for over 40yrs! I have never finished one and I have disapointed my son for about that long! I don't want to do that to my 8yr old grandson!!!!!!!!! !
Extreme grades or what ?...very impressive.........still dunno what the % I can get away with on a 7 car train......may have to get that German Bigboy with 4 drive axles..... Keep up the good work..-CS
i am impressed with this layout and interested to k now more on detail of you layout plan. I am a beginner for this hobby.... still not very clear on how to start... ranjit
M8 this is a wonderful layout, im gonna build one myself. :) I was wondering do u have the trackplan or did umake all yourself? PS. The sun makes me happy and looks great on your landscape :) Regards
I have used the second smallest Hornby fixed curve for the smallest curves and the rise is 4 in 1 - this sort of layout is not suitable for very large engines and carriages.Cheers Tim
Hi Gary If you follow the video you should be able to draw the design yourself as I have photographed all angles - the highest height in the middle (where the large girder bridge is) is 90mm. It has only 2 sidings - one down the bottom in the middle and the second siding at the top front section where the station is. I used a drop saw to cut pine timber 75mm x 38mm lengths starting from 5mm and going up in 5mm lengths to get the risers and drops. I then used Hornby curved set tracks to lay out the initial curves and once I was happy with the curves I used a jig saw to cut 4mm plywood to fit the curves and support them. If you can email me at info@christmasalight.com.au I will email you a copy of the plan.
That's a pity you have never finished a layout! I have done many at different places I have lived at. I am just about to finish another one which I hope to post in the next month or so. My enjoyment is constructing them, after that I get bored and have to do another one.
Hi Simon I have just started another 8 x 4 foot layout of a modified version of the Woodlands River Pass layout. I am changing the track a bit but it's a good design as you can include so much scenery and variety. I will post when finished.
thank you christmasalight for letting me know about your next layout as I am looking foreword to seeing it. and I am also working on a 5x4 English OO gage layout of my own or throw I was born here I have always loved old English steam trains
Simon D Hi Simon I have just uploaded my next 8 x 4 foot layout which is a modified version of the River Pass layout but in a European theme. It has 2 separate tracks, one for DC and the other for DCC
Congratulations. This is a great layout. You've managed to squeeze a lot of track into what can be a small space for HO. A lot of fun playability. Love all the mountains.
Anyone who says a 4x8 is too small for HO hasn't seen this one! Great layout!
Awesome layout you have there! The rock work looks really cool, it's amazing how much scenery you can pack into an 8' x 4' area.
Thanks. I am working on another 8 x 4 layout
now.
Very impressive. Love the stone work and elevation changes. Thanks for sharing
its probably the best 8x4 layout i have seen
Google Cactus Valley layout and it is very similar to that layout, I just modified the scenery to suit an Australian layout.
@@christmasalight thank you
Wow! It's like if M.C. Escher build a railroad! Great scenery too!
Im new to model railway can anyone tell me how to achieve the layout in oo gauge i have 8x 4ft thank you in advance
Thats absolutely fantastic mate so much work you've done a brilliant job thank you for sharing

hi martin im a newbie do u know how the layout was done , its exactly what im looking to achieve
my idea of a great interesting out of the normal flat board train set.You have put some amount of thought and love into this-i can tell!

very nice layout....I just travel to Blue Mountain last month from Hong Kong.and also I like model train very much........
Outstanding layout mate! Tons of details!
Very well done. I've spent time in NSW, you brought up a couple of memories.
Great job if mine is half this good I’ll be extremely happy cheers mate
You've packed an amazing amount of interest into that layout. Love the little cabins etc.
this is the best 4x8 I've ever seen great job
This is amazing you did a crazy good job
Very nice! Do you run 2 or more trains at the same time? That would be intresting!!
Love the mountain, awesome layout
Just beautiful!
Great ideas. Super made. Joe
Wonderful layout... The rock sculpting is incredible. May I ask, what's the radius on the curves? They look pretty tight.
Well done, very nice. Thanks for sharing.
Wow, this is just fantastic. Rock work is outstanding - all other scenery is awsome. Just love it. Great Job.
Beautiful work👌
First class, a great bit of modelling on a sensible size layout. well done, good video presentation too.
Very nice layout. Great job.
I subscribed.Joe's train world videos 😀😀😀🙂🙂🙂
It looks great, well done.
Thanks. It took around 140 hours to build but I enjoyed every minute. I now have 3 layouts lol.

Really nice layout mate.great work too, love the rock work and railcar especially.
Thank you. The railcar is a Eureka model NSWGR CPH/CTH with sound - indian red colour.

Yes, the Blue Mountains are beautiful, thx for the message.
Really enjoyed that mate, fantastically designed layout and well-presented video.

Google Cactus Valley layout - it is very similar to that with details of track layout
Hi Thanks for the comment - this was my favorite layout of all the ones that I have done.
Is it possible to get the plans for this layout

love how you've got two levels! do you have any trouble with trains going up the slope?
no, trick is not to add too many carriages. For this type of smaller layout you need shorter engines and carriages to handle the tighter curves.
Awesome layout. Any chance of posting a mud map or similar of the layout.
Its similar to a track plan - google Cactus valley and it will give you the basic track layout.

This is just simply amazing. What are the odds of replicating this in N scale on a 2' x 4' board?

Your layouts are very impressive. Can you please tell me , what is your maximum rise and minimum radius?
This is based off of Dave Frary's "Cactus Valley". There's a free .pdf online if you do a google search.
You could do it in N scale but I would recommend slightly bigger than 4 x 2' so the curves do not have to be so tight.
That's a pity you have never finished a layout! I have done many at different places I have lived at. I am just about to finish another one which I hope to post in the next month or so. My enjoyment is constructing them, after that I get bored and have to do another one.
