For the guys who are looking for a cheap/good seat, you might consider a boat seat. I'll keep an eye out for videos on governors/repair. Thanks for this video
Mine was originally a 14 hp and is now has a 17.5 hp on it. If the chassis is good (and the RE Snappers seem to hold up forever) then there really isn't any reason to scrap it. The last time I checked my calculator it said that $500 was less than $1500 so the re-power wins. If you want something shiny then spend the extra $20 on some paint while you're at it.
Nice video, it definitely helped me since I was retrofitting the same engine to my 1984 11hp snapper RER. I've owned this Snapper since it was almost new. The old 11hp quit about 2 summers ago so I decided to restore it..Appreciate your time in doing this video!
I got a 1986 snapper today, it looks just like yours, and I'm going to completely restore it down to the lock washers, I'll keep you posted on the progress.
I did a similar replacement. I did not cut my fenders, just bent the tabs down a little with a crescent wrench. I did not have the old motor to take a measurement for the pulley placement so I will try starting with 3.75 inches and work from there.
Thank you for the video! I just got done putting the same engine on basically the same mower. Your video was a great resource. Thank you again for the video!
thanks for the vid getting ready to a swap on the same year model its always nice to have something to refer to when doing these kind of projects nice to know I dont have to take apart the drive system to get the old engine out as I first thought !!!
Nice click bait...but not necessary. Great video, exactly what I was looking for. My old L head valve seats blew out my last cut. Fortunately it was going in to long term storage for deployment. Getting ready to return and this is going to be my first project. Thanks for the video.
Great video. Obviously the wiring was a little screwed up because 17 volts is way too much to charge a battery at. Looks like you bypassed the voltage regulator.
on the old tecumseh engines when they locked up all you had to do was hook a pipe wrench around the crankshaft and turn them backwards till they werent seized anymore put new oil in it and run it on those fender flares you can just bend them down to male your engine clearence their is no suspension in the rear end so the tire will never rub if you just bend it down to get your clearence
Very helpful video, I'm trying to do the same but have not yet bought a motor. Mine is a bit older I think and never had electric start, but it seems the electric start engines are cheaper as they are more common than pull only. My mower has the fuel tank on a bracket to where the tank is above the left rear wheel and I'm a little worried the new engine might not fit... Do you mind if I send you a picture to see what you think? Any ideas on what to do with the wiring if I'm not going to bother with the electric start; can I just cut them off and wrap them with electrical tape?
Are Snapper frames mounting patterns drilled to accept different hp engines? Example 8hp is a different pattern than a 12hp. I found a Snapper 1433 frame and was thinking of putting a smaller hp engine on.
Do you know how many years snapper used fenders on there machines ??? Also, can you tell me what the wheel center distance is from the front to back shaft center ?? Thanks VF
Have you had any problem with the spark plug wire being too close to the muffler? I have the same muffler and wrapped the wire in some heat resistant tape and stuck it behind the OHV box. Have you had any issues?
Great video/info. There is a snapper mower chaise here local for sale for 85 bucks. Was wondering how difficult it would be to put a new motor in something like that. The chaise that's for sale looks like new. Not sure If I'm going to go for it but having one of these little snapper mowers would be nice to get into tight spots and through small gate openings around there.
Nice vid. Well done. You think 8hp is small? I have a very old Snapper Comet 26" and I pulled the 6hp Tecumseh engine from it. I just need to buy a starter and muffler for the 12hp engine I got from a old junk mower that I pulled apart, cleaned up and resealed. The only challenge will be the fuel tank. I wish I had the tank setup that you have.
In your video, you checked the voltage output 16volts or so. What do you need is the voltage regulator. With the Briggs voltage regulator, you connect the stator output cable connector to the voltage regulator cable connector. Then the voltage regulator output cable connect to the white cable which will charge the battery around 13-14 volts.
Any idea what voltage regulator to use for this specific engine? Just repowered mine and need voltage regulator info. Snapper and Briggs have lots of information, but, little relative information to this problem.
+wnettles sorry I do not. You can take your engine info to your dealer to find out. I do believe the voltage. regulator is pretty much interchangeable regardless the original shapes. Has to be mount on the metal surface for ground wire function, red is the regulated voltage to battery positive. Once I bought one off Amazon for $12-14 , a little wire modification since I can not use the original connectors, it works just fine..
Second question, is there any trick to removing the drive pulley from the old crankshaft. Mine is the old style with the two setscrews in line with one another and it seems to be stuck on very well.
thereve you asked this several months ago, but the problem is they seize up really well. Have you tried a puller of some sorts to help? I had to remove an engine from a cub cadet... grind... cut, and did what ever I had too.
TIP: So did you pull the starter cover and make sure the electric starter gear was not jammed? Happened on mine when a starter mount bolt broke, allowing starter to move out of the proper position
BTW, I Later determined that valve adjustment was needed to make compression release work properly; kickback had jammed the starter gears; Spec on my Tecumseh OHV130 was 0.004-0.006, and found set was 0.007. Adjusted back to 0.004 and starter spins/ starts easily.
What voltage regulator did you use to keep from overcharging your battery? Just wondering, as I just repowered my 1968 Snapper 307XS 30" rear engine rider with the exact same engine. I am guessing that a Briggs & Stratton 845907 would work, but, I can find no information on which regulator is the correct one. Anyone out there know for sure? Let me know. Thanks for posting.
apparently according to a different source, these new alternators put out a lot of volts (~17) but low amperage, so a diode voltage regulator isn't even necessary.
(re: Drive pulley removal): there was a factory puller that screwed into drive plate, and then a screw center pressed the engine shaft out. Everything I read now says "NLA"
Russel, good video. I need to do the same swap. My mower is a 25" and the rear deck is 15" from the back to the support for the cutting deck. I was wondering if the 28" has the same dimension? Gary at T.E.W. said that the models under 28" might need some "Extreme modifications" , but if that dimension is the same I think it should fit. I could get another inch or two moving the mount for the seat and gas tank forward. Many thanks for the cool video!
Here is a little trick I learned you can reline a friction disc with some jb weld and a old hard rubber wheel off of wheel chair mine has been going strong for a little longer than 2 years maybe you can make a video
Hate to tell ya this but the old flat heads have way way more power then ohv and I got a over head cam witch has more torque by the way love ur video I just bought 3 snappers at an auction 2 are ventage and one is like maybe late 90es I got running the newest one but won't move but it runs great
You can buy a different mower for less than the engine cost, and a 28" mower is too small. I have one that I tried selling for $150 and no one even called me and it runs and mows fine.
I don't know what my name is Too small for what???? It works fine and mows perfect. A $150 riding mower around here does NOT exist. The are $500 and up.
28" cut is tiny, I paid $400 for my craftsman 42" and it was only 5 years old. I got two of those rear engine snappers for free because they had been sitting almost ten years and the guy was going to scrap them if I didn't want them.
I don't know what my name is Well that is great for you. Nobody every gave me free mower and I would NOT have a Crapsman mower these days, maybe one from the 70's but not these days. Yes your correct the 28 is tiny compared to the 70 inch unit.
@@DieselWorld do the best of both worlds. Repower the Snapper with a honda engine. When the engine on my snapper dies I might look for a commercial honda engine to repower it with. The Snapper mower itself is a tank. The only thing that ever seems to go out on it is rubber disk drive, a belt and springs (which are the weak points of all mowers)
Dude I know this was 100 years ago but this literally saved my life haha thank you!!
Hey Nice Project that engine screams what a great re-power for one of the best rugged riding lawn mowers ever built, great video!

Great video. I'm putting on a used 18hp B&S on my 80's RER.
I got a 1986 snapper today, it looks just like yours, and I'm going to completely restore it down to the lock washers, I'll keep you posted on the progress.
How did that restoration go?
I had a Snapper ridding mower with a Six HP motor. I did fine for years.
This is a great video! Thank you for the good and needed information!!! Eddy
Mine is identical to yours and the same condition, I have a lawn mower repair shop and can't wait to get started on it this winter.
I did a similar replacement. I did not cut my fenders, just bent the tabs down a little with a crescent wrench. I did not have the old motor to take a measurement for the pulley placement so I will try starting with 3.75 inches and work from there.

That's great. My engine is doing great so far.
Good re-power video. Snapper & a Briggs engine. Cannot get any better.

Nope that's the way it's supposed to be. Low amperage so you don't even need a regulator.

Do you know how many years snapper used fenders on there machines ??? Also, can you tell me what the wheel center distance is from the front to back shaft center ?? Thanks VF
My engine blew up last week on my Snapper.
I'm looking where I can buy a replacement.
Actually I own two of them.
Did you have that website for the engine? Thanks
Have you had any problem with the spark plug wire being too close to the muffler? I have the same muffler and wrapped the wire in some heat resistant tape and stuck it behind the OHV box. Have you had any issues?
+Paul Mitchell Nope not at all. I will check it out though when I get it going for this season.
I have a question how come you had to trim the side skirts of the fenders

Can you please tell me where you got the muffler and exhaust pipe..thank you

Where did you get that muffler? I am in the same boat and need to find the right muffler part number for the same engine. B&S was of little help.
Any issues with the spark plug wire melting?
TIP: So did you pull the starter cover and make sure the electric starter gear was not jammed? Happened on mine when a starter mount bolt broke, allowing starter to move out of the proper position
It happened to mine too. Once I got the gear free it worked for a couple more years. It threw a rod this time....

The eight hp engine you had lock up were known for throwing a rod. I replaced a few in my days.

you should make a video of your disc and wheel
couldnt add spacers to raise the engine 1" and dropped the pulley 1" extra? could have saved the fenders maybe.
The engine seen on the Snapper rider in the Forrest Gump movie looked like a Tecumseh... hence your choice of replacement engine.
Hate to tell ya this but the old flat heads have way way more power then ohv and I got a over head cam witch has more torque by the way love ur video I just bought 3 snappers at an auction 2 are ventage and one is like maybe late 90es I got running the newest one but won't move but it runs great
How come you didn't put or rebuild your l head engine
I wanted an engine that had a lot more power.
Should have got the girl to do the vid
New engine a four stroke?
Yes it is.
like to see a snapper throttled up & tuned up just right
the mower was in "Loverboy" in the 80's with Patrick Dempsy first.........
How about in cant buy me love, with the black cowboy hat towards the end? Snapper?
Snapper modification to brush cutter
Click-bait got me....
Came here for the chick. Only got to see mower.
Who else clicked on this because of the girl? wtf
MrDieselfumes Yeah, I did. I am gravely disappointed. She had sexy abs.
MrDieselfumes
I did
where is that girl
I want to know also.
Get a kolor command 25 HP or smaller they work great I have a husqvarna ridding mower I have had it for 11 years
he call TEW... ow, they went out of business this year 2019..makes me so sad... wish they were still in business...

dieselworld Craftsman is decent for a cheap mower, it has 16 hp Briggs and hasn't given me any problems yet in the 5 years I've had it.
+Sleeper Iroc it depends on how much you paid the engine if you can score one cheap repowering is not a bad way to go
at 10:00 that a muffler not a catalytic converter.
Sorry sir but there IS a catalytic convertor in the muffler. Those are the new EPA mufflers that contain the CC.
I apologize. When did they start doing that?
what is the part number for the muffler
Dang it....
Dude just fix it it probably got water in it this same thing happened to my engine
Blond with abs.
The girl is very beautiful...
i have the un toch one like came off the floore
Could a bought a nice used mower cheaper.
