While it is true that the feminist movement today has lost its true purpose and is now seriously flawed, it does not mean that whatever is happening or was happening so far in the Indian society is correct. The Indian society needs to do a lot of soul searching, have an open communication about what is happening within families, instead of pushing everything under the carpet in the name of some supposed honor, tradition, and values. If the traditions are not contributing to happiness and peace in people, they must be changed. While there are many positives in the society, the negatives must also be addressed, few examples below.
- the Indian societal setup is inherently toxic with parents subjecting their adult children to excessive pressure, control, interference in their decision making, and complete disregard for others’ personal space and boundaries.
- most of the times, the extended families are a source of additional stress and anxiety in a person’s life. Nobody has any regard for another’s personal space or boundary or privacy. Just watch any talk show with the topic of relationships. The amount of emotional violence within Indian families is alarming and no one seems to have a clue. 😢
- adult children are forced into arranged marriages which are the beginning of very unhealthy relationships. While some arranged marriages have happy endings, what about the rest that don’t? Marriages are based on money, education, caste, religion, socio-economic status, family wealth etc etc. Does anyone stop to think about the emotional/sexual/romantic/intellectual compatibility of the two individuals? Do they have a way out?
- parents instead of teaching children to make good decisions and training them to be independent and physically/emotionally strong are instead emotionally blackmailing their children to satisfy their own egos, who’s going to address this issue now?!
First, we need to clear the dirt within our own morally and ethically bankrupt systems, only then we can address the risks coming from outside like say the western cultures? Is anyone ready to talk about the serious issues underlying in our system?
