Johan I love your videos, and enjoy sifting through the older videos. I really appreciate the format, with descriptions but steering away from opinions. I'd have to say that for this comparison that the Super Bass is my favorite. Going from the 1992 to the 1959 to the 2204 you can hear the bass rolling off ind the midrange increasing. All great sounds, but the JTM 45 is my favorite Marshall circuit which is probably why I'm partial to the Super Bass.
The mk II seems the slightest bit thinner. For about the first 3 rounds, I preferred one of the non-mvs. Then some clips started appearing with the 2204 slightly better than the others! But they're all so close, almost identical. I just don't hear anyone else who plays/sounds like you, Johann. You have much to offer. Thanks for your music.
Hi Johan! Very nice comparison, I had missed this one. I checked your "'77 Marshall Super Bass - Demo and Circuit" and I have the feeling your SuperBass has the so-called "One-Wire" mod which cascade the pre-amp stages, 2204/2203 style. I refer to that yellow wire going from Vol2 centre lug.
+Dani Sindaco Thanks! On the 77 Super bass I think it's just a sloppy tech work. In the one wire mod the yellow wire from vol2 should go to the input resistors of channel one, here it goes to the mixing resistors. Check out this great video on this mod: ruclips.net/video/W_4pCaG4z8o/видео.html Cheers Johan
You're right, your yellow wire does not go to the input of V1a. Thanks for that link. I was thinking to apply the one-wire mod to a 1987 clone built according to the '68-'69 circuit with a PPIMV. But I read that for 50watters it is not really necessary as they go into overdrive much quicker than Super Leads...
I know the "shootout" is a little old, but it's a pretty good indicator, that I have a " fresh" ear.. 😊 But there is absolutely no doubt the '77 Superbass wins every time, you have a "shootout" whether it's a '67 or '77; it wins. It has a bottom much less harshly. I wonder if we have shared cathode (I just found out it is split cathode, but o,o22 filtrering). I wonder then if anything but power supply. I want to buy one, but have to sell a couple of items first ( Marshall MZ Haze head and an Epiphone LP Tobacco burst) 🎸🔊 Tak for sammenligningen Johan
Hello Would you please attempt to guess what amp, speaker and fuzz was used on the riff 5 mins into the 1969 song flowerpot by loadstone? I tried to post link but RUclips wouldn’t allow it.

All tones are awesome! Also, do you plan on putting up more videos like your "10 Blues Guitar Licks" video? That was awesome.
I am super torn. I am currently in the market for a Marshall. I’m a big AC/DC fan. That would mean I should go with a 1959, but I can get a 2204 for nearly half the price. Do you think they would be close enough that it wouldn’t matter and I could just get a 2204?
Hi Johan, thank you for the comparison. I myself have a '76 JMP 1959 Super Lead. It 's great to hear how it might sound if someone with your skills would play it. Is there any chance to get a direct comparison between the '76 1959 Super Lead and a Plexi 1959 Super Lead?
Thanks, that's very nice of you! I actually have compared it to a 67 plexi 1959 in this clip: (it was mistaken for a '75) first ruclips.net/video/KpfJ9BjXT9k/видео.html
Loving that super bass, the 2204 is a close second with the super lead right behind it... I just dig a slightly lower less shrill tone (which begs the question why do I play Strats almost exclusively haha) and the super bass seems to do that perfectly.
I could imagine, I ran a Mesa Dual Rectifier for several years because I loved the low end on it but the signature distortion just wasn't for me. Great for a tight modern metal tone but could never quite get the fatter classic sound down with it. I do love their Mark series amps but I've been slowly gaining more and more interest in the older non-master volume Marshalls. One day I'll just have to fill my living room with as many amps as I can so I can pick and choose ;)
Really all pretty much the same although with some slight variations. I have a Fawn colored 77 MKII non master volume (some call it the Swede) 50 watter. I use the top right jack instead of the top left which I think is to thin but all three of these amps have the flavor I love the most from Marshall. As always awesome demo, video and playing! Oh I like a cab with x patter vintage 30's and 30 watt green backs miced with a 57 and Beyer 201.
HUGE fab of your vids!! All 50 watters? Im looking at a 1978 JMP MKII 50w Non-master. how close would it sound to the 2204 with a post phase inverter master volume? Main guitar is and SG standard with a Duncan JB bridge. Play similar style to Dropkick Murphys or Social Distortion type of "punk rock".
Johan, hello,I think to buy in excellent condition 1972 super bass 50 watts or lead. that you think about it. By the sound of the 1972 bass is very different from the lead? I want to get the sound of malmsteen.
How many Marshall heads do you have Johan? I've got a few myself. Love them all. I was thinking of doing a mod on a Marshall 1987X, the Friedman mod. It sound very nice, what's your opinion? Yet I'm scared of losing that clean high treble sound that cuts through anything.
Hi! These are mine, but often I play amps from studios, collectors and vendors. I've never had a look at the friedman mod. If it's reversible I'd try it out, or even have a 1987X/Friedman switch depending on how comprehensive it is. Cheers
That's a good idea. Thanks. I set the stack up with the 1987x and two 1936 boxes. I just put a MXR badass in front and it sounded fantastic. I don't think I'm going to play around with it. It's a beautiful transparent head. The effects pedals sounded the best I've ever heard. So much clarity and definition blew me away. Love your clips, keep on rockin man.
Hi, I've been trying to find a 76 for some time, do you know if the one you are referring to is still available? Or if I could get the ad or number to the seller? Sorry to creep on an old post.
i have a '76 JMP 50w super lead mkII 1987x, ive been trying to find others like it but im having a hard time. all the '76 JMPs ive seen look like the the older plexis, mine is a big box, big logo with rocker switches
2:13 just screamed Van Halen for me ! :D Did he used to use the '76 SL or some other year ? I can't remember but it hits the nail with the VH stuff, seriously !!! Good job, as always Johan! ;)
Hej Johan! Keep on rock'n. /Henke
Hey Johan! Love your videos man.. just excellent! I've got a '79 JMP 2204 MV Combo that I'm looking to trade in for a Head/Cab version of the same amp. I found a head for a good price, it's an '81. In a few forums I've read a few people found the '81 JMPs to be brighter and less warm sounding than the late 70s versions. Do you have any experience comparing the two? Thanks!
Thanks, glad to hear that! The 81 may be a JCM800 in a JMP box. They may have different transformers. In this video I open up a bunch of JMP and JCM800 amps that you can compare with ruclips.net/video/53dIiFV3zl8/видео.html
They sound great, but I'm really in love with the 76, would you or do you have a video showing the circuits in these 3 amps? I think your SuperBass has those green and silver canister looking caps, but I wonder about the MV and the 76, they could have the same or mustards or even those green Chiclet looking caps.
Thanks! The circuits of the 2204 and the 1992 can be found here: ruclips.net/video/ceCwh3LgsMo/видео.html ruclips.net/video/rl_QQ0I-hUg/видео.html The Super Lead has mostly Mustards. The most important thing is the values of the components though Cheers johan
Johan Segeborn I have a 1979 2203 in my shop right now that was modified by someone who didn't know what they were doing and I was asked to correct it all and reinstall a removed extra gain stage. that's all done but I'm going to look in to the differences between the super bass and the 2203 and maybe make some more changes. this guy have me free reign to do whatever I want to it...
All very close. On the super lead did u have the channels bridged or just use one cause the circuits between the two channels are pretty different ( cathode bypass caps and such). And did this model have the .68 cap on the gain stage of the cathode follower? Man, Marshall made so many changes over the years, that with hand wired and the tolerances of the components used it's amazing they all sound as close as they do. You can almost get as much difference between two of the same model.
Really love all of these! I'm liking the super distortion in the R9 as well. Any chance for some tele action eventually? ( Ps: great playing as usual ;)
@Johan Segeborn I think the best sounding marshall would a combination of the super bass with a 77 master volume. Also in your opinion what is the best marshall cabinet?
so close in sound. I didn't even realized you switched at times. I have the 78 master volume, I found by using kt 77 tubes instead of El34 it reduces the fizzyness it had. great amp that can do it all.
Sounds great dude! What pickups are in this Les Paul? I really like the Superbass. I had a 71 Model with a Ppimv and cut down to 50 watts. It was a gigging guitarist dream!! Thanks man
I had to go with the Master volume. The smaller gigs we was playing was bitching there asses off about the Marshall. Lol Go figure. It never hurt the tone one bit. The amp just became way more useable. Thanks again. I pulled my Seymour Duncan JB and '59 and Replaced them with a used set of Gibson Super 57 and 57 Classic pickups and I couldn't be happier. It took a couple days to get use to but ill probably never go back. Its like going from a practice amp to a halfstack. Lol big difference.
Each has a individual character in the tones, I can measure the harshness of the tones at different times within the picking and the decay. Other than that. The tones carry the same tone margin to listening to them One may have a bit more bell tone quality after the note begins to decay........to my ear. I m still on the super lead though.
The 2204 sounds a bit more "nasal", so to speak. I own a '78 superlead myself, but would really love to have a 2204 too. They're just rare and expensive. And as far as I know, reissues are not currently being produced of the 2203/2204?
It sounds even better with an attenuator, but the master is sufficient to get a great tone at bedroom volume level. The Hotpkate sounds great at lower volumes.
I have a 2204 since 2001, didnt know it was rare, i dont see them on sale to often but also they wherent in production for too long, they are jcm 800 in a transitional box.
+Johan Segeborn Ok, looks like split cathode on V1 and something I don't recognise on V2, grey shielded and yellow wires. Bit like a SL without a bright cap. I have mine the other way round, SB with bright cap and bypass cap on V2.
+JB Berg It's hard to see from the pics, I'm gonna open it up and check again. The principle diffrence between a Super Lead and a Super Bass you can see in this clip, after maybe a minute. ruclips.net/video/sytYyD_R5zs/видео.html
Hey Johan! Thanx for all your helpful Videos! I am searching for a Marshall amp with massive low end and balls for fat massive rock and stoner tones. it should not be too bright and too harsh and not scooped. should have a great open sound and should be a perfect pedal platform amp. which one should I check out? JTM 45? JMP Super Bass? JMP Superlead? JMP Master 50 Lead? you have played so many marshalls, so i trust you here :-) best greets from germany
I wonder how similar the MV head sounds compared to the nonmaster heads in this demo. But man the '76 sounds amazing. I really love these "juicy" mids.
I have a 1980 NMV Superlead which i put a point to point board in with all new SOZO caps and new resistors etc etc and new Capacitors in the power section as it was getting some bad ghost notes. Carefully Biased it and everything.... The result is the most incredibly warm and natural clean of any amp i have ever heard, Fender included. I absolutely love this clean tone, but I can't get any distortion at all. Just intensely LOUD beautiful Clean... Whats the trick to the distorted lead tone? I'm considering going ahead and doing Master volume on it. Maybe just throw a dist pedal of some kind in front of it?
Hi, if the circuit values are up to spec it should distort from volume 2 and up. Maybe your new PTP board has a Superbass Circuit? One way to increase gain is to use smaller cathode resistors and to use large cathode bypass caps. Cheers
There is no 2-hole version (Master Volume) of Super Bass, only Super Lead. The primary difference between master volume and Super Lead etc is a cascaded preamp that gives more gain and master volume control. I go through the difference in circuit here: ruclips.net/video/SU69O839D8U/видео.html
Hi Zaid, they sound very much like the JMP MkII (post 73) to me. They're very bright and punchy. I compared 15 plexis in another clip where one was a 2005 Handwired. Cheers Johan
+Andrew Pierson Hi Andrew, they were all ran with all knobs basically at 5 with a hot plate set to -16dB with the contiinous knob at noun. Cheers Johan
' midas' johan makes them all sound fat and rich, but the 76 stole the show i reckon, creamy..bit more high end roll off for some reason, prob a pre-amp tube or sumfen.
Marshall started making amps with the schedule of a Fender bassman amp as example. As the name suggested, the Fender bassman was intented for bass, until guitarists discovered that it sounded great for guitar! Why do you think Hendrix and Kossoff used Marshall super bass amps?
Surprisingly i liked the Super Bass the most. The JMP 2204 was good too. The Super Lead was a tad too bright for my tastes. Killer amps!
Thanks! The Super Bass is very close to the original plexi circuits
Your intros are so funny with the various locations. Very inventive sir. I love your videos!!
That Super Bass set my balls on fire , great tone great vid great accent keep these vids up look forward to them everyday
:-) Glad to hear that Ben. I hope your balls are intact though ;-) Cheers
I'm in love with these JMP 2204/2203.
Gotta get me one some day.
Like you vids. Thanks Johan.
+datossen Thanks! Glad to hear that! Cheers Johan
Damn johan your recordings are so natural sounding! Very organic just Stellar, the best on yt!
+Larry Johnson Thanks Larry! Makes me glad to hear! Cheers Johan
That 77 Super Bass sounds amazing!!
Can't go wrong with either one of these! Awesome Johan!
+Joe Robinson Thanks Joe! :-)
They all sound similar and great....Loved all three.
+John Spina yeah they're a lot more similar than I expected
Wow! That Super Bass... First time I've ever heard it. GREAT demonstration!
I really enjoyed the Super Bass. .it sounds rad
nice playing btw
+NotoriousYeshi Thanks! Great to hear
Great Sound and Playing! Classic Sound at its best! I like the 2204 the most.
Thanks Jay! Yeah it's got a more nasal tone than the other two.
Great sounds! All of them!
Thanks! :-) Cheers
My favorite is easily the Master Volume.
+DaProGamer12 It has a more nasal quality than the other two. I like them all but the Master Volume sees the most use. Cheers
@@JohanSegeborn That "nasal" quality is a very desireable one. They do all sound great in this video
@Chuck Marble Steve Grindrod designed the two-input Master Volume 2203/2204 circuit in 1976.
Ever time I watch this I think I have a new favorite till next week when I listen to it again!!! 🤘🇬🇧😉
Your recording skills evolved, nice to see.
+The Great Western Trendkill Thanks! :-)
I had a dream last night that I had a super bass!
Super lead and 2204 sound very similar! Great vid Johan.
Thanks Peter!
Beautiful tone as always, Johan!
Thanks Scott!
Amazing how the super "bass" sounded just like the SLP! I would think it would be less aggressive and more low end?
The SLP has more gain but for my types of riffs they sound quite similar indeed
I almost felt like I was in the room . Great jam session and recording to notice the differences
Thanks Lance, that makes me really glad to hear! Have a nice weekend Johan
Check out this great video on this mod:

You're right, your yellow wire does not go to the input of V1a.

I need to get myself a JMP MK2 those sound great!
+gibbanz22 Thanks, they do indeed. My goto amps :-) Cheers
My two favorites here are the Super Bass and 50 Watts Master volume. But they really sound fairly close to another.
Yeah, surprisingly close
The difference is in the power transformers. You can tell that the 2204 has a lower voltage and isn’t as punchy. Killer vid 👍
Wow what a sound ! Les Paul Marshall Heaven !!!
Thanks Noah! :-)
This is like bukake to my ears.
Hahaha :-)
LMAO!!!
Yep I'm diggin' the '77 JMP 2204 Master Volume - cool vid :-)
Super video Johan. I don't think the difference is that great... Buy one of these amps and you're Rockin' :0)
Thanks Kent! :-)
Super Bass !!!!!!!!!!!!! And in general for good - MARSHALL !!!
Hello

All tones are awesome! Also, do you plan on putting up more videos like your "10 Blues Guitar Licks" video? That was awesome.
Thanks, I'd be happy do another of those. Any specific riffs you wanna see?
Johan Segeborn You always have great riffs so I think it will be the best if you decide.
I'll happily take the one you like the least. All great really. The 2204 a tad more harsh perhaps but probably perfect on a record.
+vdbdg Thanks! I agree the 2204 is great in a mix but maybe a bit harsh otherwise
I am super torn. I am currently in the market for a Marshall. I’m a big AC/DC fan. That would mean I should go with a 1959, but I can get a 2204 for nearly half the price. Do you think they would be close enough that it wouldn’t matter and I could just get a 2204?

great vid thanks brotha just got a super bass from ebay should be here Monday

Thanks! You make my day :-) Cheers!
There's a 1976 JMP close to me for $1,000 Cash only!! What a deal!
+Tim Stanley What are you waiting for man!! :-)
Hi, I've been trying to find a 76 for some time, do you know if the one you are referring to is still available? Or if I could get the ad or number to the seller? Sorry to creep on an old post.
Johan Segeborn exactly! he should purchase it,they are great amps for sure.btw, nice demo.i love all three!!
Did you get it??
I love the 76!
i have a '76 JMP 50w super lead mkII 1987x, ive been trying to find others like it but im having a hard time. all the '76 JMPs ive seen look like the the older plexis, mine is a big box, big logo with rocker switches

Johan Segeborn Thanks for the info!!! :D

man that super bass sounds way better than the other two to me.
+Thomas Jones I definitely preferred it here too

All are great but that 77 2204 is vicious! Could cut through mud!
@Johan Segeborn I think the best sounding marshall would a combination of the super bass with a 77 master volume. Also in your opinion what is the best marshall cabinet?
Hi Bob! The cabs up to 1973 with Greenbacks. The models 1960, 1935 and 1982 equally great. But 1982 is my favourite.
On an iPhone the the master model sounded like it lacked bass compared to the other two
so close in sound. I didn't even realized you switched at times. I have the 78 master volume, I found by using kt 77 tubes instead of El34 it reduces the fizzyness it had. great amp that can do it all.
+Luke Porter Yeah they are surprisingly similar.
I just went and did your settings with my 78' LP with Super Distortion in neck. More breakup, a little muddy. I think that bridge pickup is too high.
Johan this Gibson with dimarzio super distortion has paper in oil capacitors?
Really?
Sounds great dude! What pickups are in this Les Paul? I really like the Superbass. I had a 71 Model with a Ppimv and cut down to 50 watts. It was a gigging guitarist dream!! Thanks man
+Tim Stanley Thanks Tim! I've currently a '77-'80 DiMarzio Super Distortion in the Bridge. Been thinking abou t a PPIMV myselF :-) Cheers
+Seanizle The Astral Walker Cool, I will!
Yeah the 57 classic HB has a very big sound :-)
Each has a individual character in the tones, I can measure the harshness of the tones at different times within the picking and the decay. Other than that. The tones carry the same tone margin to listening to them One may have a bit more bell tone quality after the note begins to decay........to my ear. I m still on the super lead though.
The 2204 sounds a bit more "nasal", so to speak. I own a '78 superlead myself, but would really love to have a 2204 too. They're just rare and expensive. And as far as I know, reissues are not currently being produced of the 2203/2204?
I agree, nasal is a good charcterization. The only 2203 reissue is the JCM800 version. The should reissue the 77 2204 too
+Johan Segeborn I wouldn't mind. Is the master volume enough to bring it to bedroom volume, or does that require an attenuator?
I think it sounds great even with the master volume way down for many cabs
It sounds even better with an attenuator, but the master is sufficient to get a great tone at bedroom volume level. The Hotpkate sounds great at lower volumes.
I have a 2204 since 2001, didnt know it was rare, i dont see them on sale to often but also they wherent in production for too long, they are jcm 800 in a transitional box.
Does the '76 have EL34s or 6550s? Nice video BTW.
Thanks! They all have EL34. Cheers Johan
My 1976 super Lead Mark II has 6550's.
Do you have any old 70s Laney heads to compare ?? i have 72 klipp and its insane!, gig with it too
+Jeremy Baddock It would be interesting to compare a Supergroup to a Klipp! Hope to do that soon. Cheers
awsome that would be great, and compare a supergroup to super lead
Ha ! Love this , sounds like my fire blaster 1977 ..
;-)
Nice comparison but is the Superbass stock? Sounds good.
+JB Berg Thanks, Thanks, you can check out the circuit in this clip. I think it may be almost stock

2204 for me !
JMP Master 50 Lead?
you have played so many marshalls, so i trust you here :-)
best greets from germany
I wonder how similar the MV head sounds compared to the nonmaster heads in this demo. But man the '76 sounds amazing. I really love these "juicy" mids.
I think the MV stood great to the two classics. Cheers Johan
Cheers
Awesome info thanks I'll try.
I know there is a 4 hole super lead bass jmp avaible but whats the differences between the 2 hole version?
There is no 2-hole version (Master Volume) of Super Bass, only Super Lead. The primary difference between master volume and Super Lead etc is a cascaded preamp that gives more gain and master volume control.
I go through the difference in circuit here:

+Johan Segeborn Thanks man i got something wrong then!
Cheers!
Are these original riffs? 1:20 is soo catchy! I dream of having a super lead some day!
how come you have so many marshalls man? you have them all... all models all years
+Andrei x I borrow most of them actually :-)
well then you must have very good friends :)
+Andrei x I do indeed :-)
How do you find handwired modern Marshalls compared to vintage marshalls
Hi Zaid, they sound very much like the JMP MkII (post 73) to me. They're very bright and punchy. I compared 15 plexis in another clip where one was a 2005 Handwired. Cheers Johan
i use to walk right by supper bass'ez to get to jcm 900,s,,, what did i no? :)
How are you running the 1976 JMP thanks A.C.
+Andrew Pierson Hi Andrew, they were all ran with all knobs basically at 5 with a hot plate set to -16dB with the contiinous knob at noun. Cheers Johan
The 2204 was just a tad bit brighter.........they all sounded consistent.
How many of those amps are your own? :-)
+Christian Friis Hi Christian, These 3 are mine actually :-), but usually the amps belongs to collector, other muscicians and studios. Cheers Johan
+Johan Segeborn how many amps and cabinet do you have?
cool!
what's your favorite?
+Gresky Gresk Hi Gresky! Great to hear from you! :-) The 2204 has long been my goto amp but for solos this Superbass is my fav. Cheers
Are you from Helsingborg? :)
Hi! I live in Gothenburg! In the intro I'm at one of the piers in the Gothenburg harbour. Cheers
76 super lead all day
The super bass sounds like Toni Iommi .. Sabbath for sure
you are too cool man!
Thanks :-D
' midas' johan makes them all sound fat and rich, but the 76 stole the show i reckon, creamy..bit more high end roll off for some reason, prob a pre-amp tube or sumfen.
Just as soon as my rich uncle gets out of the poor house! Lol
:-)
Supper bass all the way,,
nice paul
+James Rockford Thanks James!
59.
Closed my eyes. Sounded all the same, good but all the same
This is not a guitar amp is actually a bass amp as Lemmy Kilmister used.
Marshall started making amps with the schedule of a Fender bassman amp as example. As the name suggested, the Fender bassman was intented for bass, until guitarists discovered that it sounded great for guitar! Why do you think Hendrix and Kossoff used Marshall super bass amps?
77 Master Volume srry
One of my very favourite amps! Cheers
instant instinctive preference = super bad bass
I did not like a y of this , plexis sound better
All this war between models when they're pretty much the same. They sound horrible.
