- My 1890s Red Lion steam engine was last steamed at the Central Kansas Flywheels show in October 2012 as indicated by the three stills in the introduction of this video.
Time to steam again.
In January 2019 the simple quarter-turn brass cock for the steam chest drain was replaced with a proper valve. In this case a very old K&W with an ornate cast iron handle. It might be a K&M-cannot really tell.
Thanks to the effects of tropical storm Barry, July 14, 2019 my part of north Texas was much cooler than normal, breezy with a few brief showers.
Long time steam associate, boiler inspector, and struggling farmer friend JJ had an order for some stone-ground corn for a north Texas craft distillery to fill. What is better than to do it with a Steam Engine? JJ took a bit of convincing being mostly a vintage tractor person. Would a John Deere B have the same charm as steam power? Not by my thinking. It was July 14, 2019 not 2012 as indicated in the video caption. Editing error.🤔
The corn processed was Reid's Yellow Dent. It is an old open-pollinating variety developed by Robert Reid in 1847. The milling operations started around 4:30 in the afternoon and finished about 8:45 well after dark. Net corn-meal from the 1930 Meadows 16" standard mill was about 20 bushels.
The Red Lion engine performed well having a nearly constant load on it for over four hours. The 8HP Brownell boiler kept up with the steam load. Fuel used was Bois D'Arc wood cut and split from a tree I had taken down at my house. Bois D'Arc is also known as Osage Orange or simply Hedge.

Nice to hear the engine running so well. If the exhaust was through the stack, you would have had a geyser of sparks.

Very good that job. What I don't see how the boiler feeds on water, with that pressure, how do they pass water inside the boiler?

When these engines were in common use would they have been connected to a barometric condenser or was the used steam exhausted just like here?
Sometimes they would. In other instances the engine exhaust is used to induce a draft in the boiler to get the fire to burn hotter.
