  • The second of Basic Fun's 2020 line of Arcade Classics is Defender. Or is it? Something is very wrong with this tabletop mini arcade release, and Jon runs it down in this review.

    The original Defender featured some the best enemy design. There were not a ton of different enemy types...but their behaviors were so different and they all worked together so well. Also...your Funko collection is legit.

    Defender 2 was developed by Satoru Iwata when Nintendo were toadying up to Atari, hoping they would distribute the NES in America, so developed four Western games for the system, another was Joust.

    I noticed when you tried hyperspace you never pressed any other button or use the joystick… Is it possible that hyperspace requires you to hold the fire button and then move a direction or press the smart bomb button? Also is it possible that the labeling is wrong and that you were supposed to hold down the smart bomb button?

    That intro theme on this game, Hal Laboratory loved to use it outside of Punch Out. The name of it is "Look Sharp/Be Sharp March", composed by Mahlon Merrick. It was released around the 1050s or a bit earlier. Honestly, I have a feeling the reason Defender 2/Stargate was chosen over Defender was that I don't think a decent Defender port for home systems ever came out until the various compilation packs were released. The only ports for Defender that came out prior to the compilations were all done by Atari/Atarisoft for everything that was considered popular in that era. The best two I could surmise in appearance and play were the Atari 8-bit computer, Atari 5200, and the ColecoVision versions. The C64 version is close, but not quite. So I have to assume that this is why we get Defender 2, over the original. In this case, they really should just have labeled it correctly.

    • @GenXGrownUp

    A bit late to the party, but just wanted to mention that Defender II on the NES doesn't have Hyperspace or Inviso. The Stargate also functions differently in that it always sends the player to the opposite side of the planet (as far away from the Stargate as possible) instead of sending them to a human that needs rescue as in the arcade game. If that's how this Arcade Classic works then it's just running the NES ROM. Not sure why they put Hyperspace on the label though...it's not part of the NES game. Maybe they had different plans and somehow ended up doing this instead.

    You make a lot of good points. However, there is no stargate anymore, and there hasn't been for a long time.
    Defender 2 has been the official name on every port, and re-release of the game.
    retrogames.fandom.com/wiki/Williams%27_Arcade%27s_Greatest_Hits
    "Every home version of Stargate has been called Defender 2, once Atari got sued for bringing home a port of Stargate to their Atari 2600 system, as there was already a product with the home exclusive name of Stargate released at the time."
    It was basically a legal issue.
    So even though we think its kind of Stargate, its not, so they actually got half the name right.
    They probably didn't want to take the time to remanufacture the game, or do a reprogramming of a look alike game, since they had the previous stock, motherboards, etc.
    The 2600 version is actually not half bad. Same with the 8-bit, and 5200 versions.

    • @GenXGrownUp
      @GenXGrownUp  4 года назад +1

      You're partially right, negative1. I agree that the D2 name has been used a lot for home ports, but that was NEVER the name of the arcade game. And this is an "Arcade Classic" not a "Home Port Classic," so that's what I would expect to see.
      The Defender II name was used in some home releases, due to legal issues (according to the bonus material for Midway Arcade Treasures, Williams wanted to "make sure they could own the trademark" on the Defender name). The name Defender II has been used on many home ports and game compilation appearances, but not in arcades. The Atari 2600 port was originally sold as Stargate, but was renamed to Defender II for a later re-release.
      🙂 Thanks for watching!

    • @negative1723
      @negative1723 4 года назад

      @@GenXGrownUp Well, as you said for legal reasons, it doesn't matter if it was called Stargate in the arcades. The point is this is a home release, and they can't put the name Stargate on it, even if they wanted to.
      Also, it is port of the home system. Maybe if they had gotten the arcade Roms, they might have been able to get away with it, but i doubt it.
      Thats the point of the legal system. So they are forced to use the word Defender.
      There's no way around it.

      Any way you slice it, Stargate is and always will be the game. No revisionist history or legal wrangling will change that. But Stargate isn't what this unit was sold as -- it was supposed to be Defender, and it wasn't.

      @negative1723 4 года назад +1

      @@GenXGrownUp I know we both agree in a way. But it doesn't really matter.
      Even if these are all so-called 'Arcade' Classics. Not one of them is the arcade ROM,
      they have all been NES ones, or watered down ports. So none of them are actually arcade games.
      Unfortunately, it doesn't look they will ever get the license to port arcade games,
      so expectations have be tempered, even into for future ones.

    The NES Defender II is NOT Stargate. There were a whole lot of things in Stargate that are not in Defender II. I know this because I got 10,000,000 in Stargate one night, I own an arcade Stargate (And a Defender) and I have a copy of Defender II. Honestly, I think that the reason they did this is because they simply don't have room for all of the buttons. The Stargate/Defender setup uses a 2-direction joystick (Up and Down only), a reverse button, Thrust, fire, smart bomb, inviso, and Hyperspace. By using the Defender II ROM, they're taking advantage of the NES version layout with the D-Pad, Fire, Start, and smartbomb. The Hyperspace omission is unforgivable. You're right that we deserve better, but this is likely the reason they did it. They just couldn't make a device with all of those functions playable on a cabinet that small. They wanted to sell a Defender game, and here we are...

      I bow to your Stargate skills, David, But Defender II indeed the name by which the Stargate port was known on several home consoles. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stargate_(video_game)
      It very well may have been missing some elements of the Stargate arcade game, but that's true of a great many home ports.

    Basic Fun does this crap often and is the reason I own zero products from them. They do these little annoying cash-grab moves that is simply meant to “steal” from you. Even though they aren’t actually stealing from you, a scam is a scam. A scam is a sort of theft. And this is a scam two levels deep. It’s should have said Defender II, and that would still be a scam, just not as bad as what they did here. People who buy these, know better, and know what they want. This is the exact thing that will make a company loose the faith their patrons have for them. If times get tough for them, no one will believe in them enough to risk helping them passed whatever difficulty. They will fold soon enough, giving way to the hard-working companies who offer a product that is what it says. When I buy a box of Capain Crunch, I want Captain Crunch in the box. Not Corn Flakes. Even though Corn Flakes may be …ok ish. It still isn’t Captain Crunch, and that a scam/theft.

      You know, I got the real Pac-Man. And Dig-Dug. And Q*Bert, and Spy Hunter... all for $19.99. You'd be a fool to expect Stargate in place of Defender! 😋

      It's close enough for me. 90% of the time it's a decoration anyway.
