Although this is a requiem, it ends on a hopeful note. My chorus has performed this work. It really gets me right in the heart. Talks to me of what it is to be human.
Agreed. In fact, Brahms wrestled with the title: He wanted it to be a work for "mankind" (his word), and felt the "German" part of the title was too narrow.
07:20 Look at the music stand in the lower-left corner, and then admire the page-turning technique: Lift page with left hand, and then turn the page with the bow. BRILLIANT!!!
In college, while I was in a Madrigal Singer choir class, our class instructor, a Lutheran Church musician, at the piano told us of the great declamation of the passage starting at 9:33, declamation, a great matching of chords and words, she explained us while playing the chords.
This was my favorite passage: Isaiah 35:10 Die Erlöseten des Herrn werden wieder kommen, und gen Zion kommen mit Jauchzen; ewige Freude wird über ihrem Haupte sein; Freude und Wonne werden sie ergreifen und Schmerz und Seufzen wird weg müssen.
Liszt and Wagner attended the premiere of this work. After, Wagner and Liszt walked together. Wagner aske Liszt, "What did you think?' Liszt replied, "We are no longer alone!"
(Tiago 5.7) Mas a palavra fica pra sempre. (1.Pedro 1.25) Resgatados do Senhor voltarão e virão a Sião com alegria. Gozo eterno sobre as cabeças haverá. Gozo e alegria terão alcançados, e dor, gemido, fugiu deles.(Isaías 35.10)
I sang this wonderful piece once in a choir with my father together. One of the great masterpieces of German music.
Merci ! C'est fantastique.
I just saw in the description that you are the conductor. How beautiful this movement is! Thank you 🙏.

This beautiful piece of music was inspired by the Holy Spirit.
Brahms was an atheist.

I only discovered this piece recently, but I think this is perhaps the best rendition I've heard so far.
