I would say that Star Wars was always a global phenomenon and the level of popularity of the franchise right now is just a pale shadow of what it was in the late-1970s through early-1980s. I think the only time Star Wars has ever reached the level of popularity that I remember from when I was growing up, is during the hype leading up to Episode 1 in 1999; but even then it wasn't quite on the same level as the hype leading up to Return of the Jedi in 1983.
The Star Wars of today just feels more like a soulless animated corpse of what the franchise used to be.

Kids today play video games over action figures. I don’t recall Star Wars figures as a kid. Also, action figures break down over the years cause they weren’t meant to be collected and held for decades.
