    This is what happens in an unregulated market. CGC are a private company solely concerned with profit, and it is in their interests to force people to re-slab their 9.8 books to get the 9.9. And when eveveryone does that, they'll come out with a 9.95 grade. And there's nothing you can do to stop them.

    Eventually 10 will be the new 9.8 but they will then have a 10+ grade. They need to keep milking this.

    This is what happens when a monopoly is promoted rather than opposed. Competition is a good thing, but apparently, that's not desired by the masses. Seriously, what incentive does CGC really have to make any changes for the better? They have been anointed the king of the hill and for various reasons, people don't want that to change--even to their own detriment. People don't seems to want to force CGC's hand to improve by voting with $$ and either using a competitor or just not giving it to them. As a result, they get whatever CGC decide to give them in terms of quality of service, transparency, etc.! What I've seen by so many is whenever they get the short end of the stick by CGC, they rant and complain about it then in the next video, they talk about how they are readying the next batch of comics to send in. I just shake my head and move on!

    I have come to the realization that the best way to collect comics is collected editions. I sold all my slabs and bought amazing omnibuses, hardcovers and deluxes. Not only they look beautiful in display, YOU CAN ACTUALLY READ the damn comic, there is little to no speculative market and no third party is coming to tell you if your book is “god enough”. Your only worries are: Do I have space in my shelf? And when will this out of print book get a new printing? Oh and there is 95.6% Less toxicity.
    I took the step and I am never looking back!

    • @collectiblesdad
      @collectiblesdad  2 месяца назад +1

      Fair take, I can understand the draw to omnibuses for readers

    • @reprintranch
      @reprintranch 2 месяца назад +1

      Another thing I enjoy about purchasing collected editions, particularly older ones, is that the market for these books is often unsettled - meaning that you can often find desirable items dirt-cheap if you’re patient.
      I’ve been firmly in the “readers, reprints, books and digital” camp for a very long time and have no regrets.

    A better question is: would grading companies exist if we were not idiots? Grading is an arbitrary scam, so let CGC play their games.

    Agree with everything in this. Looking forward to some analysis of 9.9 prices in relation to other 9.9 sales and in relation to 9.8. I believe there will be more and more 9.9 which will lower 9.8 prices and then in 5 ish years same thing will happen with 10.0. Then a brand new 10.0 max plus gold elite starburst grade will appear.

  • @reprintranch
    @reprintranch 2 месяца назад +1

    I can’t see how CGC can argue that their grading standards haven’t loosened up re: 9.9 books.
    The closest thing to a valid explanation I can think of (and I really doubt CGC would acknowledge such a thing, even if true) would be this:
    In years past, CGC graders were told that for the sake of saving time, any comic that looked close to flawless should be given a 9.8 and the grader was not to devote additional time to distinguishing between the 9.8s, the 9.9s and the 10.0s. If a particular comic looked completely flawless, the grader was to pass it along to a supervisor, who would “make a personal assessment” and then assign a few 9.9 and 10.0 grades, along with some 9.8 and 9.6 grades to the rest - without making more than a cursory examination.
    The twin objectives were to save time and keep control of the number of 9.9 and 10.0 comics under management control.
    Just my notion. And I agree that standardized grading and secure slabbing are essential to the economic health of the secondary market.

    I'm not sure why all of this comes as a surprise. The 9.9 and 10.0 grades were barely used before. There are books with thousands of 9.8s but very few or zero 9.9s and 10.0s. Did anyone ever believe that really made sense in the first place? In the past CGC just defaulted to giving every high grade book a 9.8. It seems now they are using the 9.9 and 10.0 to distinguish between a typical 9.8 and the best of the best 9.8s. We all knew that some 9.8s look better than others anyway, so giving a 9.9 is CGC's way of acknowledging that difference.

    I've gotten way better at grading or CGC grading standards have changed.

    I'll be sure I'm in the minority but I always felt like there weren't enough 9.9s and even 10s. Everything seemed to come back 9.8 to the point that it got ridiculous to me. Especially when it comes to modern new books right off the press.

  • @nda42831

    It’s a money grab. If they can turn your 9.8 into a 10 the book is worth more. If the book is worth more they can charge more. Best course is to ignore these books and value the 9.8 and the 9.9/10 from 2023 and earlier by serial number

    Collectors aren't idiots....they're just more enchanted with the idea of making $ off their graded books than they are about facing the facts and reacting accordingly. CGC has a *fiduciary duty* to provide the highest revenue and profit to their stakeholders, but the collecting community lets CGC implement these changes to the hobby without repercussion. Nobody adds monetary value to their books like CGC does - controversies, inconsistencies, and lack of transparency be damned, so collectors will look the other way until it personally impacts them in a dramatic way.

    Let me tell you a little short story I just sent my ASN TO CGC 2 MONTHS AGO
    Signed by Todd I purchased it on a 9.4 for $800 had to be Rehold so I told him go ahead and press and clean and I got 9.8 so it went from $800 two maybe $3000 because I pay $65 to press and clean through them off the last 3 submission that I have done I I had got one in each submission a 9.9
    I didn’t do the grading so I’m not complaining I just paid the $25 for grade it and if they want to give it to me, you are welcome so I’m not an idiot. It’s more like if you can beat it join them 😂😂

    Your assumption is that it is the grading standards. It has been shown that any book can be counterfeited, in the past few years with a high degree of accuracy. Maybe the books are actually 'new'. No one can know, all we can do is assume *something* is different. Oh hey, here's one, since there are channels that press books to 9.8 regularly, maybe someone sent a bunch of books to a pressing wizard like that huh? Now, I've brought this up before (and you haven't addressed it yet, even though you said you would)...is that a 'real' 9.8 or 9.9 even, if it was just a pressed book that was a lower grade? Is disguising flaws in a book, and then declaring it 'perfect'...fair to anyone? Is it fair to the market? Do you know what happens when goods are overvalued, in a slabbed market? See the coin bubble (as I mentioned before). That Heritage is actually run by the very people who rigged the coin bubble tells you something, doesn't it? (again, see Karl Jobst's video game grading fraud video).
    So yes, you're all idiots.

    I don't know much about comics so my question is this. Are 9.9s and 10s actually 9.9s and 10s or are they like psa 10s in the card world (which can be gem or can be poorly graded 10s that should be 7s, is or 9s)?

  • @timreierson26
    @timreierson26 2 месяца назад

    This video states the obvious. CGC will always look for revenue sources. So getting the market to crave 9.9s means a lot more submissions. CGC is now obligated to grant some 9.9s and 10s to fuel this craving. Anyone who buys a 9.9 or 10 now or in near future for big money are STUPID because we know more are coming. The RUclipsrs doing videos on the increase in 9.9s are collectively sounding the risk alarm on buying them (or waiting to sell them) which is a good thing.

  • @michaeltan4204

    I have no doubt 9.9 and 10.0 always existed especially for modern and copper age books. I think cgc intentionally withheld these 9.9s and 10.0s until now.

    I mean, you can talk about how great grading is as a concept, but seeing as that we know CGC slabs are garbage you can't even use the argument about about "I don't get raws cuz I don't want to worry about a page missing" cuz that comic in ur CGC slabs could have been switched out and you have no way of knowing unless u crack the slab to get the book out. At least with a raw u can open the book and look thru it.
    Some day slabs might live up to their reputation, but so long as comic slabbers keep pretending everything is fine just so they can make a quick buck and not demand quality from their slabbing company then slabbers are, as you say, idiots.

  • @christopherpittman3471
    @christopherpittman3471 2 месяца назад

    Grading is subjective, inconsistent and subject to change at any time. On the sports card side we have seen grading become more strict, many cards in 10 slabs would rate something less today, everyone knows it. Grading companies make mistakes too.

    • @Supertomscustoms
      @Supertomscustoms 2 месяца назад

      These mistakes can dramatically change the market and no one is held accountable. There should be zero subjectivity at these higher grades. Any flaw in that range should be easily measurable and quantifiable. If they miss it there should be recourse to make a correction.

    9.9’s and 10’s shouldn’t exist. It’s an obvious cash grab. Plus it screws all 9.8 collectors cause they all lose money as more 9.9’s are graded. Matt Nelson said they do comparison grading and that you can have a spine tick with a 9.9. He also said that a lot of 9.8’s are actually 9.9’s.
