The Joyo is one of my favorite overdrive. I had the Maxon OD808 and had the Joyo, but I ended up selling my Maxon and keeping the Joyo. My speakers are slightly darker than V30s, so the Joyo works great with my setup.
I personally loved that noisy sound coming from the Triple XXX with the vintage out front hahaha. Sounded insane. Would fit for a chaotic metallic hc sound for sure!
In my experience, the Joyo, DemonFx, and Behringer OD pedals have the same exact chip as the Ibanez and Maxon units they're copying, but the QC variance in these cheap pedals is pretty high in comparison. You can buy 5 of the exact same pedal and they will all sound noticeably different, as well as have vastly different values in the same positions on the potentiometer controls. If you get a good one, it's a damn good one, so hang onto it; if you get a shitty one, return it and try again from the same or another retailer. Technically the same issue exists in the original pedals, too, but the variance isn't anywhere as pronounced or extreme as the cheaper ones, so as is probably obvious, YMMV.
DemonFx is sick good and there are few others which are better then boutique blah blah brands, some so called copies of demon are way better then originals in terms of qulity manufacturing and i saw some extra add ons like dust proof pots, switches etc. No need to spent more 50$ max 70$ on 1st class pedal no matter what sort of pats they use, but brands are greedy they wish to earn millions fast and then they lie a lot, use hypes, pay even people to write in superlative on forums.
@@sisajtegabre I have their Precision Drive clone. It's great. I might wanna get a Freedman BE-ODX for a possible layering sound. My gf plays bass, and I showed her their dark glass clones and she's interested, to say the least. Brands like Donner Deal and Valeton have some cool stuff, too, especially when it comes to Fly-Rig type pedals and some... Non-standard takes on older pedal trends.
I bought the Joyo when I first started getting into overdrive pedals and it did nothing for my amp that I remember, I was a playing a JCM 2000 TSL 60 and didn't hear any improvement so I returned it, I borrowed my son's Walrus Audio Voyager and that pedal tightened up that amp nicely. I now have a JCM 2000 DSL 100 and JCM 900 and I run both with a Berhinger 0800 Vintage Overdrive (808 clone) and a Friedman Buxom Boost, each pedal makes the amps sound nicer one their own but together they jump it up a level. I also know what you mean about finding pedal demos for the style of music you play because I play skate and pop punk and everyone only does leads which I can't do 🤣. That is why you have become my new favorite amp and pedal demo guy 👍
I have to admit that I'm pretty late to the overdrive game. I grew up in a small town in TX and I didn't know anyone who used OD pedals. I remember one guy showing up with an old plastic Ibanez "Soundtank" TS5 and talking about how awesome they were. I thought it was a distortion pedal... I plugged it in, thought it sounded like crap (because I had NO IDEA how to use it) and never tried an OD again until a couple of years ago. Everyone I played with always just got the best tones they could from their amps and we all just thought that was how it was done. It wasn't until RUclips came around that I understood how to use them. And yes, I'm old... Anyway, awesome video! Thanks for helping people understand what all this gear does!
Your not alone, I never knew about overdrives either, im 50 and just in the past couple months have been using overdrives, I have a DSL20hr & Boss Katana MK2 and boost both now.
@@scottbrown9008 much like Kyle, I have a ridiculous amount of gear now. I still don't use any OD much, but I have a TS9 and an SD-1, so at least I have options.
Hi Kyle. I wear glasses too. You might need the anti glare treatment on a new pair or get contacts. Contacts are cool you can just pop em in before filming then take them out. Contacts are also cheaper.
The Joyo has more gain at the lowest setting than the ts-9. A simple change of 1 resistor or soldering a resistor in parallel on the back of the board makes it sound more clear. I made that small mod and it is now more clear at the lowest gain setting.
@@JeffB-hf9rbThere is a 51K resistor that controls the minimum gain. It is just below the gain pot at the edge of the circuit board. I just soldered 56K resistor (green blue orange gold) in parallel to the back, which reduced the value to about 27K. If you don't want to take the pedal apart, you'll need a multimeter to find and measure the resistor. It cleans up nicely and is suitable as a boost pedal.
@@JeffB-hf9rb Yes, it's easily reversible, didn't have to do any major surgery. I just made sure that the resistor leads were not too long so that the resistor doesn't touch the back plate.

I am watching this, and thanks for the love man. I was wondering about the Joyo vintage pedal and have been debating about what pedal to boost my amp with.
I had a couple of these Joyo screamers back in day. A great inexpensive way to look into overdrive pedals. A little noisier than an Ibanez, but for the money it's a great pedal.
I had started my overdrive pedal search a few months back , I had bought the joyo initially and was satisfied but had some nagging voice in my head saying well maybe a more expensive one might make it sound even better , I bought the walrus ages everyone raves about for 200$ and tbh the difference was subtle to me at best , if anything just seemed to add a bit more noise , but the positives aspects of it , I was getting with my 50$ joyo pedal , so yes I returned my walrus and saved 200$
Same here, and for a different flavor of boost I added a TC Spark Booster in line with the Joyo. The Spark in the mid switch position does a very convincing TS boost and I switch between them pending on the guitar.
I have both pedals the joyo i got about 2 years ago used, i did not use it at all until 2 weeks ago when i bought the ts9 just for the giggles. I will admit that I was a snob when it comes to tube screamers. I am now a fan of both pedals. They sound great on my crush and bugera vintage 5. I dont use them on my dsl's because you dont really need the on those amps.
I really apreciate you explaining that people with Great amps can still benefit from a drive or 'tube scream ' knock off I had the same approach: What do i need it for if I have Marshall stack JVM?
Hi nice review. Question, I play my guitar directly through the amp(music man 130hd valve amp), now want to by this joyo pedal, so I connect guitar to joyo and joyo to amp and thats it? Or need something more in between? Thanks
It would be cool if you put together a rig like the ultimate begginer/budget player gig rig. Or maybe not put together the rig but make a list of gear and give advice how to find deals and what to avoid etc. I know you've showcased a lot of good cheap gear but condensing it down into one short video I'm sure would help a lot of players trying to find a place to start out with their first real rig and not just a little combo
i like the joyo with the JCM 2000. And it really pulls the dual rec through the quicksand marsh bog of sadness, and i feel it correct and complete it's tone. And finally the joyo on the peavey triple XXX is soo gnarly it wins hands down. i think it could be used on real thrash with pickups like dimarzio distortion or SD full shred SH10 pickups, like songs from Forbidden the forbidden evil album and twisted into form , step by step, etc. the reason is its 'vintagy' and maybe an amp like a diezel hagen, a fryette sig X, marshall jcm, peavey triple XXX , solid state amps, and be better in a mix and on loud stage, like van halen. maybe joyo has a modern voiced version of a boost, they have a clean boost pedal is that one the joyo 'ultimate drive'?
Seems like early Joyo pedals were pretty terrible. They did end up stepping up their game, though, with their Bantamps, the R-series, and their switcher boards. Good video! THANKS!
Great pedal it’s on all the time for me , but I’m not trying to be as percussive as Kyle with my playing . I’m not even tempted to buy another ( way more expensive) od pedal .
Standard sounded pretty good to me with joyo. But in c#... It's sounded ok. It sounded like there's some extra middy frequencies. Like you Said. I have the joyo extreme metal, and it has a boost switch, sounded alot better than that vintage. You should try the joyo extreme metal pedal. I think it would go good with the xxx and mesa amp.
I have this pedal and it is pretty okay. I am no TS9 fan overall but this does the thing well enough for me. Post dimed HM2 going into my cranked to fuck "plexi" it sounds really nice. My only complaint is that it does not have the monkey graphic that the Harley Benton version has and I NEED the monkey graphic. edit: I get the feeling that when this pedal was being designed that they were using a 6505/5150 to test with as I thought it played really well with that Peavey low mid thing that Peavey has. Maybe I am just tone deaf or not hip to the cool sound.
the vintage overdrive sounds killer idk what you mean haha the mxr was my least favorite to be honest. well in this comparison at least. the SD1 sounded pretty killer too
To be honest everything is copy of 1st original pedals or if you like based on them, electro-harmonix, MXR, BOSS, Maxon etc made some ''originals'' the rest just combine what they did in the past. Take any boutique brand in last 20 years they are all ripping of legends and just change PCB traces and switch few values, add extra switch which essay or knob-pots.
