  • Christina Aguilera and Cher star in a movie that's mostly an excuse to let Christina Aguilera and Cher sing, and to play a game of "spot the cliche" with Diva.

      A lot of the trouble with this is that it's not a movie with musical parts - the movie is meant to just string together the musical parts. it's not a great story, but I don't think it deserves a lot of the hate it gets, and I enjoyed the musical numbers. My worst problem with this video is how it takes the fiancees side in the final fight and assumes that she's the aggrieved party who's being lied about. I know these reviews are by a demon, but that still seems rather uncharitable.

    You know what would've made an interesting rivalry? Tess takes Ali's advice to do live singing and hey, Bell's character is really good at singing at it actually saves her career! Then the tension would really be more valid, and it would justify Bell's character still being employed.

    There's so much weird logic behind this. If they're struggling financially why do they have a live band playing along to recorded tracks? Why didn't they just use the recording?

    • @seventeen_nights7368
      @seventeen_nights7368 5 лет назад +8

      I havent seen this movie so take what I saw with a grain of salt but if the audience thinks that the singers are singing live, they would probably find it weird that the music they're singing to comes from nowhere

    • @hydrokineticpowerhouse
      @hydrokineticpowerhouse 4 года назад +15

      Kalin Moultrie that logic falls apart when they play a different song or use a different girl. Two people can't sound exactly the same and singers can't dramatically change their voice. My guess is that the band plays between sets or they play along so the music is more pronounced.

    • @GuiSmith
      @GuiSmith 3 года назад +2

      To a degree, it’s kind of obvious lip sync performances, akin to drag or most strip shows that do things like this. It’s a fantasy kind of situation. Additionally, the bands can mix between songs when all they have are lyric tracks that are being switched between. Fun stuff happens when you can play but not sing live.

    • @Platinum400
      @Platinum400 3 года назад +2

      @@GuiSmith But drag shows normally don’t have a band in addition to the track. They normally just play the track. Like I guess they can do stuff in between but that seems silly given their situation.

      @emsnewssupkis6453 5 лет назад +33

      I worked in strip clubs way back in 1969-1972 and NO ONE 'danced' Broadway-style. We stripped which is an artform. You are on stage fully clothed and lose it one item after the other while focusing on the men in the audience, going from face to face, looking into their eyes, in a teasing way. It is an art form. The dancing in these movies are a million miles from real burlesque. Usually, a man doing jokes comes on stage to get laughs.

      Um, genuinely curious here, not trying to be rude, but how is striping an "art form" and not just a form of sex work and legal prostitution? I mean, I know pole dancing is a great performance art and I'm considering going into pole dancing myself for core and upper body strength training, but how is striping the same?

    • @pbg624

      @@bethanymcmurtrey9542 because one they arent actually about to have sex and two they are dancing while taking one piece of clothing off at a time. it is an art form. how can you compare that to sex work and prostitution when they arent having sex at all. sex is never involved in burlesque.

    • @hartyhart6154
      @hartyhart6154 4 года назад +6

      PBG to say “sex is never involved in burlesque” isn’t entirely true. It’s a very sexy and sensual and provocative form of dance, and a strip tease. It is a form of art and expression, but it’s definitely sexy. The clothing is revealing but there’s enough there for the imagination and a lot of the dance moves are very sensual and teasing. Just because they’re not actually having sex on stage doesn’t mean sex isn’t a part of burlesque.

    The sad part, as with most of your Musical Hell reviews, is that you can almost see a grain of what could have been. This has the makings of a potentially terrific stage musical sending up all of these tropes, provided you could fit the shoe-horned musical numbers into some kind of a workable plot. (There might even be the potential, a la the Shrek musical, for fitting in a lot of theater throwbacks just to play "spot the reference." I mean, the minute I saw the "glamorous makeover" moment with the close-up of Aguilera in the mirror, the first words out of my mouth were "I'm a pretty girl, Momma!") Maybe someday this movie will have enough cult status for people to pull a Xanadu on it.

      +Gibson DelGiudice I didn't even catch the "Gypsy" reference--good one! It would be nice if the movie was honored of his works, but it's not. It basically show Christina sing way too much than other characters I was like give Cher, Alan Cumming, Kristen Bell and other actors chance to sing. There are most scenes don't fit with the songs. At last, the long-awaited review of Burlesque and you did not disappoint. I love the running gag of chiming the cliches so you don't have to say them. I look forward to the christmas episode. By the way, is it just me, or is Christina Aguilera wearing a bad blonde wig or a bad blonde dye job? Either way, it looks bad on her.
    As much as I would have loved to see Eight Crazy Nights as an episode, I understand why you wouldn't want to do it--I also don't like watching a lot of gross out stuff too. I'll always have the Nostalgia Critic review at hand.

    As a previous waitress, the idea of Ali coming in and waiting tables without any word with the manager annoys me because of how much fucking confusion it would cause all of the waitresses and bartenders. She really just came in and fucked up some poor ladies' night who was trying to make money in Vegas just to... prove a point? Fuck, just to feel a sense of justice after that scene, I'm imagining all of the waitresses going out back and beating up Ali after that.
    Also, a simple idea that I think would help to fix the movie, have Ali start training BEFORE she's reluctantly given the chance to prove herself. This grounds the character back to reality (even dancers in Broadway and Vegas have long-ass dance rehersals to learn the choreography) and it gives her a reason to want the one bedroom, because she wants room to practice in private instead of going into the living room and doing wild hand motions. It also would give the bartender whose name I had already forgotten something to do. Maybe he sees her practicing in the living room or bedroom one day and vouches for her to the owners, saying that she works hard and is REALLY trying. This also helps cement their friendship because he trusted her enough to stick his neck out for her.
    Maybe him watching her learn and master the sexy choreography is a turn on for him, like at first, he thinks she looks silly and he's happy to see her not taking herself so seriously, and trying to get it, then she's finally looking powerful and getting it and he's like ooh okay fuck, she;'s kind of hot though.
    Maybe show that she's practicing by marking some of the moves in the back by the bar, like doing hip rolls while she's waiting for the bartender guy to give her the drinks, listening to the old jazz tracks playing on her headphones, making breakfast while adding in little accents that the dancers did. (pouring like frosted flakes and doing Burlesque arms or something)
    Maybe that's a reason also why Kristen Bell's character hates her too. She sees the bartender sticking his neck out for Ali and is like 'yo, no man, or person, ever did that for me. I literally clawed my way through a BFA and all I got in return is working in a Vegas Burlesque house lipsynching to old jazz tracks.' Maybe give Kirstin Bell a bad previous relationship where a man tried to hold her back and keep her from dancing at this Burlesque (he thinks it's gaudy or whatever) and that's why she's so bitchy, she CAN'T let anybody upstage her or do better because, in her mind, this is why she's doing it all. To prove this ex, and herself, wrong.
    It also gives her a reason to already be really good at this when she goes to the rehearsals, she's been working her ass off this whole time and nobody but the bartender has really been noticing. Pit him on her side and make him and Cher the two people in her corner because Ali has the kind of bite that reminded Cher of herself at that age. (Maybe Cher's character had to do something similar to prove herself in what would have been a male-dominated entertainment industry and is like, damn, if Ali has the bite I did, she can be even better than I was)
    it's not really anything LESS cliche'd but in my opinion, it uses the cliche's better

    I actually (accidentally) ended up seeing this in the cinema when it first came out. I recalled reading a review on Roger Ebert’s (may he RIP) website of a theatrically-released documentary on burlesque’s ‘golden age’ that piqued my interest, and mistook the title on the local cinema marquee for that. I was subsequently blown away by the film’s audacity in ratcheting up as many cliches as humanly possible in the space of a mere ninety minutes. If there’s anything worse than a bad movie, it’s a merely competent one that makes no effort whatsoever to be memorable or otherwise distinct. If not for the title track song (which I thought was pretty catchy) and the presence of Alan Cumming, the experience would have automatically deleted itself from my memory the second I left the theater.

    The thing is you *could* salvage this movie with just the smallest amount of genre savvy or even really amping up the cliches and making some type of commentary around that like Into the Woods. I’m not even sure who this is supposed to be for: it’s not sexy enough to bank on that, the talent they have is wasted, and if you just wanted new music from Christina and/or Cher, then just get the soundtrack and skip over all this. At least Moulin Rouge! knows what it is and wants to be the best, most bombastic, ridiculous version of itself.

    I think a lot of things would have been solved by Ali not realizing that he is straight, but realizing that he is in a relationship with a woman who is not there to say if she is or isn’t comfortable with Ali staying at her fiance’s place. It could then be solved with him assuring Ali that it’s fine and that his GF doesn’t mind (flashback to him informing his GF by phone the night before, possibly with said GF being super dismissive of the situation, planting the seeds of herr not caring about the relationship too much). True it might set up his fiancee as too much of a steriotypical bad guy, but I’m not sure we would have much time to make her a neuanced character when she’s only heard over the phone.

      The thing is, Moulin Rouge compensates for its' cliche plot with a grand and unique style, and extreme talent behind and in front of the camera that are giving it their all. Burlesque on the other hand recycles and imitates stylistic techniques from better movies and the talented cast like Diva said, is forced to take a back seat and do nothing so Christina and Cher don't have to share the spotlight.
