the thing I love about Buttons is that he is DEEPLY WEIRD but he knows his shit about sailing. he's really competent and even recognised the Spanish War ships when they were just dots. Like, many weird characters don't have any other qualities but Buttons is weird and competent in his own regards and I love that
I latched onto him as my fave in episode 1, which is not surprising because I always loved Pintel and Ragetti from PotC and Buttons has the exact same energy. Surprisingly knowledgeable, yet completely unhinged. The rest of the crew grew on me as well of course, especially Frenchie is just too adorable :P
Something that I'm surprised no-one has mentioned about our adorabley feral sailor man, is that I'm pretty sure he might have a touch of sea madness. Always making sure if a person is real or an illusion, the whole "I thought ye was a demon, boy", and other stuff I'm forgetting. I thought about putting his cannabalistic tendencies in the case of him having a touch of sea madness but I feel like that's more or less a character trait of his. I don't think its a heavy amount of madness but i do believe he has a touch. He did say that he's been on many ships and he is the best sailor that the Revenge has.
After S2 hype has been died down. Now that we know he's canonically a sea witch, it brings up something else. He could still have sea madness but it's different since he's been confirmed to literally be a druid. His magic as well as the over exposure to the ocean blue could very well have caused sea madness. The example from S2 that my mind first went to was when he literally had to be kept on a leash to keep from returning, that feels like the perfect example of all three things but I don't have to words to summarize.
So, for shits and giggles I made Buttons as a ranger for a dnd one shot I’m playing this weekend 😂 Beast companion is obviously Livvy, I have a spell called hunters mark (I get to do extra damage against one target creature) which will be me yelling I HEX YEEEEE 😂 so thank you for these, tryna brush up on my scottish accent/Buttonisms
I'm not even kidding I have a friend who looks A LOT like Mr Buttons (just with a full head of hair, much younger and slightly less crazy) and I'm always teasing him for it. Also he's one of my favourite characters so I consider it to be a compliment. He should cosplay as him.
