-Avoid terms and labels altogether (and probably in service to that don't include queerphobia as a major thing in text), just depict the relationship (for an example of how to do this look at Yuri On Ice or Call Me By Your Name)
-Set it in a futuristic or fantasy world where the terms are different or not present at all, as a bonus to this strategy is the chance to explore how terms shape perceptions in the first place and what is seen as queer or not in different societies

I’ve seen a shocking amount of young people not understanding that it wasn’t that long ago when all gay people were fearful of their lives. Gay relationships in the media were only “accepted” fairly well in the 90s in the US, and it’s been less than 10 years since gay marriage has been legalized. Really less than 10 years since LGBT people became more loved than reviled. I think a lot of people don’t realize that it wasn’t that long ago that there was no good queer media representation. Queer pulp fiction is honestly the best that queer people could get for a long time.

I read the title as "The big book of lesbian HORROR stories" and somehow wasn't surprised when it started with the story about a horse

Being born in 98 I'm surprised how far and quickly society is marching on tbh. I honestly joked at a job interview that in the next 5 years I'll be on the phone or internet 2.0.

I got the notification for this while I was casting my phone screen to the TV with my family and it was on screen for an _uncomfortably_ long time, so thanks for that

In the early 2000s, there was a HUGE fad of sapphic pulp novel imitations. It was one of the genres where we could just have fun for fun’s sake. Sapphic media was really pretty limited, but we got some truly delightful media from that era, like the Incredibly True Story of Two Girls In Love, But I’m a Cheerleader, and comics like Dykes to Watch Out For (which is where the Bechdel test came from).
I’m now realizing there are adults who weren’t born yet when this happened, and I’ve never felt older in my life.
(I’m also old enough that I think it’s necessary to note that I’m trans, not a cis guy who was just really into early 2000s lesbian culture.)

I thought the title was a mispelling of "lesbian horror stories."
Nope it says "Horse," and I don't know what else I was expecting

Just want say, as an old fart to all the kids, that's a Grateful Dead shirt. Lots of people complimenting it but no one seems to know what is. It's a pretty appropriate shirt for the horse on drugs chapter lol

"What to you know about horses?!" is a great pickup line.
I know barely anything about horses, but it would still work.

When you claimed that the old woman was the chick from Satan Was A Lesbian I deadass thought you were serious and briefly wondered how they got the rights to the character since there's no way that book is in the public domain yet.

The L Word taught me that true lesbians don't want horses, they want pet monkeys. I'm terrified of monkeys. Thank you for giving me hope as I was an avid pony pals reader at a young age and was obsessed with horses.
Not so much anymore, as I am terribly allergic.

Dude, old pulp fiction stories are wild sometimes. Most of them are basically ok but every now and then you get one that just drops some white supremacy on you as casually as starting a story with "once upon a time..." As though a reader living when the story was written would be expected to respond to the key conflict with "Ah, yes! Of course the Atlantean mummy-wizard is working to bring down civilization so that the brown & yellow races can take over - that makes perfect sense!"
And yes. That was an actual story I listened to on RUclips. I can't remember the title but that was indeed the central conflict. Oh, and there was a "magic potion" the villain was basically analogous to opium, and most of the story was set in an opium den. I'm positive there was anti-semitism sprinkled in too and I just didn't know what to listen for so I missed it.
