The fact that even after coyote took a bite from the gila monster and is still willing to handle one for our entertainment and learning proves just how much he loves what he's doing
Or he needs to do this. It's his job, he does it for money.
Its not that hard to avoid getting bitten by a gila monster, when he got bitten it was in purpose so i wouldnt expect he is afraid of them

For anyone interested: The beaded lizards have now been separated into 4 separate species, instead of being subspecies of Heloderma horridum. Now there’s Heloderma horridum (Mexican beaded lizard), Heloderma exasperatum (Rio Fuerte beaded lizard), Heloderma alvarezi (Chiapan beaded lizard), and Heloderma charlesboguerti (Guatemalan or Motagua valley beaded lizard).

I’m on team Gila. They have best uniforms. That bright coloration is a warning not to mess with them. Plus it has *monster* in its name! Doesn’t get any cooler than that!

This was probably already mentioned in the comments, but there was a cheap black & white horror movie from the late 1950s called The Giant Gila Monster. Funny enough, the live lizard that they filmed for the movie was not a Gila Monster, but instead, a Mexican Beaded Lizard. The movie was also featured in the show Mystery Science Theater 3000, where the crew made jokes about it (that’s where I first saw the movie)

Also if you look at what a monitor lizard (in this case a crocodile/asian water monitor) can do they get scarier and scarier
Venom, push pump breathing, razor teeth, high bite force, and a tail that can break your arm

I have to give it to the Gila Monster. Ever since I heard about these venemous reptiles from a children's book, that I wish I could remember the name of, I've been somewhat interested in them.

For how often you're in Tucson, I'm super sad that I haven't been able to run into you guys yet! Would LOVE to have a day with you guys out at the Sonoran Desert Museum or something. My girlfriend and I often drive around at night to look for and save critters and snakes in the road.

As an AZ native, I'm team Gilla, as I take pride in the fact that one of the U.S.'s most rare animals is found only in the arizona deserts... & of course Mexico. Go team Gilla!
Gilas are in southern Utah and Southern Nevada.

I always thought the beaded lizard was just a ctrl+copy+paste of the Gila, just yellow (kinda when playing a video game, and you're both the same character). Had no idea the beaded was that much bigger.

Tarantulas are significantly less dangerous than a black window. (Their bite is more like a bee sting.)
Black Widow vs Brown Recluse would be a better comparison as far as North American spiders are concerned. They’re the two most notorious and misunderstood spiders in the United States.

The Gila Monster is a protected species in Arizona. They generally will not mess with people. I've never seen one and I'm from Arizona. Just leave them alone if you encounter one in the desert. Thanks for sharing info on these spectacular creatures.

One of the gila monsters I had was very touchy, and would be alarmed by my switching the light on. I noted during the late '70s that his exhalations left a deposit on the glass. that convinced me that his breath atomized the venom and might deliver it to the nasal passages of a potential predator, perhaps acting as a deterrent. This was also the only reptile to envenomate me.

Gilas are very docile when captive bred. I seriously want one.
You have to put in the work with them and even then you aren't guaranteed to have a super docile animal.
