Paige Beal there are no silly questions 😊 If you have a scanner you can use that. You’d want to make sure you’re capturing all the detail so I change the settings of my scanner to scan at 600dpi (dots per inch). If you don’t have a scanner or your artwork is too big to fit in a scanner you could take a photograph of it. Make sure you take the photo in good natural light and try not to alter the perspective too much. Then you’ll need to edit your images (whether you’ve scanned them in or taken a photo). Just a few edits to make sure you’re happy with the colours, saturation, brightness contrast etc. I use Photoshop but there’s other programs out there. Hope that helps 😁
Oh and how you upload is similar for each company. There will be a section on the website to create your own product and then it will ask you to upload and you choose from the files in your computer. 😊
This is such excellent advice. My biggest anxiety is over this exact question. I’m more hands on and uploading according to the regulations of each company takes time to learn. Does photoshop turn your work into a vector design so that it can be reduced or enlarged without losing detail?
Awesome question! I just wanted to also add that using software like Affinity (which is a one time payment) could be a lot cheaper for you since Photoshop is recurring payments.
So happy I found this, too many videos are focused around quick POD easy money stuff. Like I just want to sell my art without losing a huge profit doing so. I’m not looking to make a crazy business, and I’m happy this is art focused. Currently, I’m deciding between Art of Where and Gooten. Printify uses multiple printer shops and it can cause inconsistencies and Printful is quite expensive. I feel like Gooten and AOW are more art focused and have unique products.

@@itriedfollowingatutorial828 Hello when I was scrolling through the comments, I saw yours and spontaneously I wanted to ask, how is going with your shop?
Thanks for a great informative video! I'm helping my artist Mother with her Red Bubble shop this Holiday Season and I have to say...I"m not too impressed. I placed an order for gifts for me to give as a way to help her out and also to get an idea of the products. I ordered tote bags, spiral-bound journals, stickers, postcards, greeting cards). So far I received the journals. They are pretty low quality, flimsy. All the art is photography. It came out a little dark on the journal covers. The stickers were ok. I'm about to receive the tote bags. I'm having FedEx tracking issues with the shipment of postcards and greeting cards. Customer service is responsive but they misunderstood what was missing and tried to send a replacement order (which was nice) for items I already received. A bit confusing, but I'll consider it due to the holidays... The biggest issue I have is the shipping cost! $20.00 was the charge. They were quick to discount items as I add them to the shopping cart (which doesn't help the seller too much with profits!) but then they hit you with high shipping. My order is coming in 4 shipments and I think they charge per shipment. This cost should not be passed on to the buyer. So as you can see, I'm getting both buyer and seller perspective on this. Thanks again. I"m going to look into the others you mentioned.
Thanks for your info. I'm glad you found this video helpful :) I've only tried the cushions and pencil cases from Redbubble. Currently I'm using Printful and Inkthreadable.
I use Interestprint and ArtCow. These POD sites -put your designs on too a wide range of products but then you upload images to your own say Etsy, Ebay, Amazon, Zibbet and other marketplaces. A lot of companies are now offering a dropshipping service, as in you place your design onto a product and they will send it without any labelling of their company on the packaging directly to your customers address.

Hi, Emma! I'm from Brasil and I'm planning to use print-on-demand sites. I really liked your tips, very well explained, and so useful! Thank you so much!
Found my self nodding in agreement all throughout , also learned some things. I also wish the Redbubble shops were easier to navigate. I Love Spoonflower, wondering if you've tried Vida? Thanks so much.
With Vida you have to be really diligent about producing your own traffic to your storefront so if you already have a strong base then you can be successful on it
I think what she means is that you have to have made $20+ in order to essentially "cash out". If you haven't made over $20 in a month then whatever you have made will roll over to the next month. It will keep doing this until you have either made more than $20 (which you will then be able to receive) OR January comes around at which point you will get paid whether or not you have made over $20. So basically, you'll get paid as soon as you make over $20, but if you still haven't made $20+ by January, RedBubble will pay you regardless even if it is only $1.
@@EmmaCarpenterIllustration I only currently use Spoonflower for when people order custom pet plushies. My customers dont seem to be interested in fabric. Hello. Thank you for the precious information! I am new on what concerns selling online. Can you put the same artwork in many online shops at the same time?
Olivier Waridel all the print on demand companies I’ve come across have something in the terms and conditions that state the artist keeps the rights to artwork meaning you can have the same design on multiple print on demand sites. But always good to check the terms and conditions when you sign up ☺️
I'm a Canadian artist and been looking for a place that can integrate to Etsy. Been looking at Printful. I really like how they have samples. I wish they showed Canadian currency at the top of their site. Also thinking about Art Of Where. Not sure yet which one to choose.
Hi I’m new too researching-KDP (kindle/Amazon) has a royalty system and lots of instructions on RUclips. I’ve also heard of lulu books but not so much about it.
Meem meem I’m currently using Inkthreadable who are a UK based POD company. I’m really happy with the quality to their prints. They do A4 and A3 framed or unframed. I also sometimes use Printful as they offer more size options for their prints, and also square prints.
Thank you glad you found it helpful! 😊 I'm currently using Printful and I integrate that with my Etsy shop; where I also sell things that I send out myself like enamel pins and stickers. In my experience most of my traffic comes from social media, although a small percentage does come through Etsy search results.
@@EmmaCarpenterIllustration Thank you darling! I already subscribed to your channel, I will search later for other of your videos about POD experiences
Thank you for this informative video! I vistes your RB site; I really like your design style. I know a lot of artists make a living by using multiple streams of income. I noticed you have about 30 listings. If it’s not too intruding, how much profit does your current RB site generate for you?
Hi Delia, I'm so pleased you found this helpful 😊 glad you like my designs too. I've been focusing on my Etsy shop at the moment, but it's good to have Redbubble as an alternative. You can set your profit by changing how much the retail price is.
May I ask if an artist should have their art signed and dated for print on demand? Or should I hide the signature. Also is there a way to copyright one's artwork when using print on demand platforms?
Hello thank you for the video, when creating a print file if I leave a coloured border outside of the red line for the sides and back will the canvas print still come out normal or will the border come inside the safe print area and be crooked ? Thanks
Does anyone know a print on demand site that offers shirts that are 100 percent made in America? And also organic/natural material? Really trying to find one let me know if you know of any!
@@emmag2434 yes I know but I was trying to find a clothing company that grows organic cotton in the US and manufactures in the US. Who also partner with POD sites. But I'm probably going to end up going with Bella canvas and econscious. Econscious told me they make 1 organic cotton shirt in the US although the cotton Itself is grown overseas.
Thank you Emma for this video. It was interesting to hear your review of RedBubble. I do use them for certain items and indeed I would recommend anyone to order a sample of their own art on fabrics before presenting them to their customers. Personally I was not impressed at all with the quality of the fabrics they were using for the cushions, tote bags and zip bags and I found the value for money not really worth for my customers as the size of the tote bags for example and cushions were smaller than a standard size on the market. The quality of my BrightNightLight design colour therapy art were also disappointing...maybe because my arts have a lot of fine details which didn't seem to come through under the fabric they used. I am still using RedBubble but only for other items such as blocks, journals, phone cases, etc... Anyone is happy to check them out if they want to see the quality under my webpage www.brightnightlight.co.uk
Thanks for your comment Robi 😊 Yes I agree it's a good idea to get a sample to test the quality. Although the handy thing about print on demand is once you've tested it and your confident in the product you don't have to order samples of each new design. I'm going to be testing out some new cushions and pencil cases from a different pod company (possibly Art of where). I was actually happy with the size Redbubble offer, but as far as I know you can't integrate Redbubble with Etsy, which is where I run my shop at the moment.
Hi Tal, thanks for your feedback 😊 I made this video as research for myself and for others to find out more about print on demand companies. I've never actually heard of Gooten.
@@EmmaCarpenterIllustration Thanks! It's seems like they really cheap and quality.. I think I will order few things for myself and test it.. Actually it's looks like you need account in every store and from each one order the best for you :)
Griffly Creations No, you would need to work out the tax yourself. I’m based in the UK so I’m not sure how the tax works in USA. Check if there is a tax free threshold in your area as you might not have to pay tax if you’re not earning above a certain amount (including any other income). It’s a good idea to keep track of your money coming in and any business expenses.
Emma Carpenter - Illustration Journey yeah we have to file quarterly here for income tax when self employed, but the sales tax is a different beast, and kinda confusing. Some states here don’t have sales tax, but the rest vary wildly from 4% to over 10%
Hi Kamuanya, yes I still use Printful, I have it linked to my Etsy shop and use it for cushions and mugs and prints. I may look to getting these items in bulk in the future, but POD is really useful for testing the waters and seeing what's popular. I also sell items on Etsy that I get manufactured elsewhere like enamel pins which I can't get print on demand. Good luck with your new shop!
Hi Laura, I've added them to the description box, but the companies are: 1 Redbubble 2 Society6 3 Art of where 4 Kite 5 Printful 6 Contrado 7 Spoonflower Hope that helps 😊
Hello, thanks a lot for the video, it is very helpful! I´d like to ask about the quality control. Do you think there´s somebody at RedBubble who checks the design or colours before printing? Being a beginner, I feel a bit nervous about preparing everything right. May I ask if you use CMYK colour profile for your prints? :) Thanks.
Glad it helped 😊 I'm using Printful more than Redbubble at the moment, and haven't had any issues with the quality. Different POD companies ask for artwork in different profiles. Some companies actually prefer it in RGB, and most will want a transparent background. Best thing to do is check the artwork guidelines for the POD company you choose. Good luck 😁
My question is can you have your brand or logo in the artwork itself when selling items with print on demand? I heard that platforms like Red Bubble will not let you brand your artwork? What do they mean by that? I'm confused? There is sometimes that I want to put my brand name on the pictures I draw, is this not possible, or can't you have it in in or on the package itself? Anyone? Thanks...SBN RESONATE
When I’ve bought other artists work from Redbubble there is nothing to say what artist it’s from, all the packaging and promotional bits inside say Redbubble. I don’t think there would be a problem with including your logo in your artwork somehow, but that’s not something I’ve tried on Redbubble. Some pod companies like Printful offer white label shipping which means it won’t say it’s from the pod company. And you can also add your logo to the inside of a tshirt for example and you can pay extra to include your own branded flyers, business cards and stickers. You can also add your name and logo to the packing slip for free. Hope that helps ☺️
I know this may sound silly, but if you draw and paint artwork how do you upload the designs to the POD companies?
Paige Beal there are no silly questions 😊 If you have a scanner you can use that. I'm a Canadian artist and been looking for a place that can integrate to Etsy. Been looking at Printful. I really like how they have samples. I wish they showed Canadian currency at the top of their site. Also thinking about Art Of Where. Not sure yet which one to choose.
It's up to you 😊 but you can integrate multiple POD companies with Etsy, if they both have different products you want to offer.
Kite.ly seems interesting!
what are your opinions of inprint?
Thanks!! - can you recommend a site to sell comics and small books since I'm looking to expand into more the 'art of storytelling' - ??!
Hi I’m new too researching-KDP (kindle/Amazon) has a royalty system and lots of instructions on RUclips. I’ve also heard of lulu books but not so much about it.
Which webstie do you recommend for selling art prints?
Meem meem I’m currently using Inkthreadable who are a UK based POD company. I’m really happy with the quality to their prints. They do A4 and A3 framed or unframed. I also sometimes use Printful as they offer more size options for their prints, and also square prints.
Thank you ! Very useful ! I still wonder what kind of POD website would offer best traffic for the shop...
@@meliseflores0 aw thank you 😊 glad to have you here.
I've seen in Redbubble you have the watermark, but in other POD sites, there's no option.
Hello thank you for the video, when creating a print file if I leave a coloured border outside of the red line for the sides and back will the canvas print still come out normal or will the border come inside the safe print area and be crooked ?
Thanks
R Tube If you want a boarder I’d say have it visible within the print safe area ☺️
@@EmmaCarpenterIllustration OK, thanks you for your help
Contrado is the only one where I can only to 100 designs.
Thanks for the tip 😊
Does anyone know a print on demand site that offers shirts that are 100 percent made in America? And also organic/natural material? Really trying to find one let me know if you know of any!
Printful is based in Americs and has organic and eco options
@@emmag2434 yes I know but I was trying to find a clothing company that grows organic cotton in the US and manufactures in the US. Who also partner with POD sites. But I'm probably going to end up going with Bella canvas and econscious. Econscious told me they make 1 organic cotton shirt in the US although the cotton Itself is grown overseas.
Hello. Can I just ask why you didn't consider Shop Vida please?
Thanks for watching 😊 sorry I've never heard of Shop Vida, but if you've done research on them and you like them, go for it.
thank you
You're welcome 😊
I was actually happy with the size Redbubble offer, but as far as I know you can't integrate Redbubble with Etsy, which is where I run my shop at the moment.
great video
Thanks Rita 😁
You didn't say how is the quality of them, also do you have an opinion about Gooten?
Hi Tal, thanks for your feedback 😊 I made this video as research for myself and for others to find out more about print on demand companies. I've never actually heard of Gooten.
@@EmmaCarpenterIllustration
Thanks!
It's seems like they really cheap and quality..
I think I will order few things for myself and test it..
Actually it's looks like you need account in every store and from each one order the best for you :)
@@talatiya2242 Good luck with your testing 😊
Can you use more than one POD companies for your store?
Yes! You can use multiple POD companies. Just check if they integrate with your website or with Etsy.
I'm only 8.5 minutes in, but do all of these sites handle sales tax for you? Like, they charge it, but do they file it with your state for you?
Griffly Creations No, you would need to work out the tax yourself. I’m based in the UK so I’m not sure how the tax works in USA. Check if there is a tax free threshold in your area as you might not have to pay tax if you’re not earning above a certain amount (including any other income). It’s a good idea to keep track of your money coming in and any business expenses.
Emma Carpenter - Illustration Journey yeah we have to file quarterly here for income tax when self employed, but the sales tax is a different beast, and kinda confusing. Some states here don’t have sales tax, but the rest vary wildly from 4% to over 10%
How do you like printful? Do you still use it?? I just created an account🥰
@@EmmaCarpenterIllustration thank you, this is very helpful!!
Emma Carpenter - Illustration Journey how are you finging the printful times for fulfillment?
@@IAmHillahMixel mostly fine, although cushions (and other all over print items) were delayed for a while, but seems back to normal.
I dont see the list for print on companies
Hi Laura, I've added them to the description box, but the companies are:
1 Redbubble
2 Society6
3 Art of where
4 Kite
5 Printful
6 Contrado
7 Spoonflower
Hope that helps 😊
@@EmmaCarpenterIllustration thank you yea i did not see them show in the description box..
Good luck 😁
@@EmmaCarpenterIllustration Thanks :) Good to hear. Keep inspired! :)
GREAT video, very helpful. Thank you very much
Glad you enjoyed it! 😊
