Little story for y'all. Back when I was a teen in the 70's I loved roller skating, so would go every Friday and Saturday night to the local rink. I would often get in for free by helping the bands (they often had live music) set up. There were two songs you could count on being played every time you went. This, and "Last Child" by Aerosmith. Every time I hear either of those songs I am 16 again, my long blonde hair in my face because I am skating backwards fast and swaying in time to the bop. Good times......
I was hitting the dance bars a lot when this was released in the 70's (arggh...ok they were disco bars) and this song would bring down the house, dance floor was packed. And those places played the music LOUD. I mean, really really LOUD. And this song sounded great loud, you couldn't sit still listing to it. Same with Let's Dance, China Girl, etc. Bowie really got what the mid 70's music audience wanted and cranked out a lot of hits.

I'm 57 now, but this song came out when I was in fifth grade. During lunch time, we ate in the classroom and could bring our music 45's to listen to. I brought this song and when it was played, almost all of the class said to turn it off, so they did. I felt embarrassed. The only black kid in our class, ( BIG kid and very popular), asked me what the song was and who sang it. He loved it! I felt so much better!

1975, when Bowie was so funky he even appeared in person on "Soul Train." Of course, he was just copying the US funk artists he was obsessed with at the time, but still, he was good at it.
Which is why David Bowie recorded the Young Americans album at Sigma Sound Studios in Philadelphia, PA. David wanted to capture some of the Philly sound that was going on at the time. The song Fame would be David Bowie's first #1 hit on the Billboard Charts.
His real name is David Jones but called himself Bowie to avoid confusion with Davy Jones of The Monkees (RIP). It was written by John Lennon formerly of The Beatles (1940-1980) whom he was close Friends with. He also was one of the very few White Acts to do Soul Train in the 1970's. He is a guy who reinvented himself musically over and over. He was also considered to be next to Rod Stewart and Robert Palmer (RIP), one of the world's best dressed men. He is also a very smart and savvy Businessman in the sense that he co owns the Beatles catalogue with Michael Jackson's Estate. In the 1970's when he did this Album, he had an up and coming Singer named Luther Vandross sing backup for him. Check out Modern Love, China Girl, or even Let's Dance. Diddy then known as "Puff Daddy" sampled the Song for Been Around The World.
The beauty of David's thin white duke phase. He made beautiful and upbeat music with the most dark subject matter. Golden years is dark but the music moves in such a way that you can't help but smile until you know what he's talking about.

Hey Mr. J AKA J! You are i think my favorite of all the reactors i watch, for your mission"keep great music alive", as well as you yourself and how you do it. That being said, i think if you have never heard of John Peel, a British DJ who essentially helped shape a lot of western musical tastes by playing what he liked, you would dig this guy and his mission, which was finding and presenting new music. He passed some years back but he was easily the single most important radio DJ to pop/rock/alternative/techno/reggae/punk/african/novelty songs and so many other genres and cross genres as we know them now. He was a champion of what he liked and sometimes he liked some silly things indeed. I am not sure why but i think you would really like his story as he was not a musician but a friend of them, like yourself!
Now that was a perfect reaction! The look on your face when you first paused it! Everyone has tried their best to repeat the magic in this song. Duran Duran did a version which is great. But David Bowie is the man!!

The funk influence comes from guitarist and co-writer Carlos Alomar who was one of James Brown's former band members. This song is based on an arrangement he worked out for Bowie's cover of The Flares' "Foot Stomping". James Brown later lifted the riff for his song "Hot (I Need To Be Loved)".

@@wrutledge1 Prince was a "Johnny-come-lately" compared with Mr Bowie LOL.
@@wrutledge1 Prince was undoubtedly a dude, but Bowie was so cool that he managed to make being David Bowie cool.
You can recognize John's voice if you listen. Love this song
Next on your Bowie setlist should be “Fashion” or “Ashes To Ashes”! Trippy videos!
Ashes to Ashes was the real start of what Videos would become not just background but Art.
Where is the Goon Squad?
"Fashion" for sure, but not the video version.
@@dzed9191 I saw him playing Ashes live in Montréal. Everybody was like stunned in their seat. "What..the f...." ! Unbelivable.
Unique. We knew something special was happening, there, in our face.
I'm 68, and everytime I hear - no, listen - to it, I relive that life changing moment. R.I.P. SpaceMan.
PS When I heard "Black Star" for the first time, could'nt help it but cry a river.
Not to mention the trippy SNL performance with Klaus Nomi...
Bowie - RIP - One of the most diverse vocalists ever...
Also, Stevie Ray Vaughan played on Bowies 'Let's Dance' album.. awesome stuff...
Awesome album!
From memory Fame was the first number one song by a white artist in what was called the Black charts in 1975. Hard to believe nowadays I know.
David helped introduce SRV to the world 👍🏻
You hit it on the head. “There is a difference between hearing a song vs really listening to it.” I have been really listening to songs I’ve heard my whole life with you today and it has been a surprising joy ❤️
Bowie and Bing Crosby singing Little Drummer Boy on Bing's Christmas show back in the early 70's. It's one of the prettiest songs ever.
Elton John.
“I thought it was a P-Funk song” is the highest compliment this song could ever have.
I think if Bowie and George Clinton ever got together, the audience would have absolutely died listening to it.
Bowie only wanted to be recognized as an artist producing inspired authentic work..
He would have loved to received this compliment.
@@Kaocyde they surely would have!!!!
George Clinton said that the Ziggy Stardust character inspired the Mothership Connection, and he name checked Bowie in a song.
Diddy then known as "Puff Daddy" sampled the Song for Been Around The World.
thank you...I LOVE learning soo much new info.....so interesting !!!!
@@dogsareprecious4842 Why you are so welcome. I'm love RUclips where folks can exchange information and ideas.
Great taste in ladies too. Married Iman and they were together for decades.
Dude, I love watching you listen to great music! Super joyful, Brother Jamel. Thank you. 🙏🏾
Brother Jamel getting stank faced. Stank steppin'. Love it!
You must do Modern Love- You will know that one.
You should check him out singing it on "Soul Train." And Elton doing "Philadelphia Freedom" there, too. Hot stuff.
The beauty of David's thin white duke phase. He made beautiful and upbeat music with the most dark subject matter. Golden years is dark but the music moves in such a way that you can't help but smile until you know what he's talking about.
David Bowie and Bing Crosby singing Little Drummer Boy on Bing’s Christmas special. So interesting to see those two together.
@Scott Olson - always thought their version of this song was the prettiest I ever heard. And , yes an
(cont)very interesting for them to pair up.
John Lennon co-wrote this song, and also plays electric guitar on it (distorted riff) .. as well as background vocals
I’m surprised the song didn’t credit him. Like MJ’s The Girl Is Mine has (with Paul McCartney). Why is that? Cuz John Lennon’s voice is quite minimal.
😃 I just love the reaction when he realises that "THIS is David Bowie?!!" 😃
I just wish we could have seen his reaction when he found out it's Bowie and John Lennon! 😃
The album 'Young Americans' is fab from start to finish... Bowie had it all.... funk, soul, heart, love... it's all there..'If you don't know how to dance, somebody gone catch you' love that comment !
David Bowie was amazing. So much amazing art that man created.
I was 6 years old when this came out. Those were the days when every genre of music was on the one AM radio station.
I was 8 years old at the time. My mother loved this song. I remember her bringing home the 45...
He co wrote it with John Lennon and that is John singing background ground vocals with David! So so great!!! Love them both so much!
When this song came out I swore he was ahead of his time. I stand by it today!! So much talent; he touches the soul.
I love when that look of recognition comes over your face, priceless, Jamel! 😆😁 You MUST react to LET’S DANCE by Bowie!
David Bowie was a chameleon and made many different types of music. Love seeing you enjoy this, Jamel! ✌️♥️😊
Hey Mr.
“... makes a man think things over...”
Bowie, so ethereal! He's not dead he just went home! Bright amongst the stars!
The Legendary David Bowie's greatest song.....co-written with his good friend, the greatest songwriter of ALL time....John Lennon, who contributed the SOUL to this classic !!!
Let me tell you something ,,, I was a black teenager when this song came out and this was my MF ing Jam do you hear me! This cemented my fandom for MR Bowie
Come on now who doesn't know "The Thin White Duke" David Bowie He was the first major rock star I got an autograph from when I lived in Cleveland going to the Agora club where he played piano when he toured with Iggy Pop..
Check out Suffragette City by him.
Yes!
David Bowie was so awesome. Married to a beautiful lady, gorgeous kids, wonderful voice and loved everybody. No Hate, No prejudice, No judgement. Just David. I so miss him being in this world....
If you ever get around to Bowie's song "let's dance", see if you recognize the guitarist who plays the last solo.
Let's Dance definitely!!! Bowie is another rabbit hole. He has a lot of classic tunes
A guess. Adrian Belew.
He "stole him from Frank Zappa.
David Bowe - Moonage Daydream
Guardians of the Galaxy vol.1
Bowie was a regular part of my album rotation back in the mid ’70s. Very talented individual. R.I.P.
