If I remember correctly, this game was not televised in the New York area. I watched the highlights on the 11 o’clock news. That afternoon, my Browns got shut out by Baltimore in the NFL championship game.
Namath's arm gets overlooked. Not just quick release, but his deep ball was one of the most exciting ever especially '65- '72. This final TD was a bullseye dart to win it! And the bomb setting it up super javelin-like throw high arcing. Almost a Willie Mays style catch by Maynard! An awesome dynamic duo they were.
You would think the Colts would have watched films of the Jets in this game, and realize the Jets like to run over the left side of the line. But if they did watch those films, the Colts did nothing to change that tendency in Super Bowl III, as the Jets spent the 4th quarter of the Super Bowl game smashing the Colts on the left side with their running backs. The Jets never threw a pass in the 4th quarter of that Super Bowl.
Namath really gunned that ball in there for that late touchdown to WR, Don Maynard. Namath was a good tackler, too, lol. Had that body block and have seen him make tackles in other games. I think making a tackle against Detroit (might have been a pre-season game) got him hurt, and out for the regular season one year. Raiders liked to throw and couldn't do much in that continual gust. Teams that blew chances lost to the Jets. Big reason why the Colts lost the Big One to New York that year.
In the Jets America’s Game, Don Maynard had this to say about that AFL showdown: “The Super Bowl to me was an easy game. The only pressure game I felt was the AFL championship. That’s the game you got to win to get to the Super Bowl.”

it was an exhibition game...tried to tackle Lions LB Mike Lucci....that would never happen in today's game///
@@recPokerFish It was. But it was a cheap shot at Joe's knee. Film
exists of it. Shame else Joe might've
played until 1980. Knees replcd 90's.
@@RAYGERVATO an absolute cheap shot...
