  • Long before we knew the names Uvalde, Pulse Nightclub, Parkland, and Sandy Hook, the nation was stunned and horrified by the Long Island Rail Road massacre. Watch our special documentary. Find out more: cbsn.ws/480hFOo

Let's not forget Amy Locicero - Federici who was one of six killed that evening. Day's following the shooting Amy became an organ donor and helped save the lives of four people by donating her heart, kidneys and her liver. May she rest in peace.

You might have included more about Carolyn McCarthy, nurse by profession , wife of one man who was killed on that train and mother of another who was seriously wounded, who was inspired by her family's ordeal to run for Congress to keep guns out of the hands of other obviously insane people. She served a number of terms in Congress without much success in changing gun laws, as far as I know. Neither did Sen. Diane Feinstein, a professional politician, also intimately involved in the senseless murder of two people. 50:25 . Rep. McCarthy ran straight into the NRA brick wall. The NRA was at its height of power then. The incredibly brave and determined Carolyn McCarthy has always been one of my personal heroes. As someone who once worked at a job selling alcohol, I learned that I was not to sell alcohol to an obviously intoxicated person. How is it that the firearms industry is never held responsible for the damage they do ? They say that the guns don't kill people, people kill people. Well, atomic bombs don't kill people either unless someone sets them off. Bombs were invented to kill a LoT of people. So were today's guns. Let's
not make it easier for others to kill LoTs of people.

It's not the gun, it's the man, often a schwartze, holding the gun.

@@pauldalnoky6055 you have noticed that many more men than women go around shooting people seemingly at random. More white people than people of color, also. One famous " dead white man" named Winston Churchill
was quoted as saying that " jaw, jaw is better than war, war" There are millions of angry men ready to swing their
fists for every Jimmy Carter, the American President who
got the Egyptian leader Anwar Sadat to sign a treaty with alleged terrorist and Israeli head of state Menachem Begin. Let's spend some time studying how Carter managed to accomplish that. ( He wrote a book about it.)

To all who were injured, to all the families who lost a beloved other, please know you are neither forgotten nor do you grieve alone all these decades later. Love never ends. As long as we are alive they remain with us in our minds, hearts and souls. {{{{{You aren’t alone}}}}} although it sure feels that way.
I understand my sentiment means little to those who grieve. It is the only (inadequate) comment I can make but it is truly sincere and deeply heartfelt.

The Biggest Reason for all these mass shootings is Tear-Jerker Soap Operas like this one rather than a serious adult discussion of the problem. When we finally get to that point it will become obvious that the issue of Gun Control has very little to do with mass shootings. The 1st mass shooting was in Austin TX in 1966. And before then guns were even easier to buy than today, yet Zero mass shootings occured. Mental illness is certainly a relevant factor in mass shootings but where discussion falls short is that it solely focuses on the mental illness of the individual shooter rather than also looking at the mentally ill American society that spawns these monsters. The fact that the vast majority happen in America should give you a clue about how very morally sick this once great nation is.
    God Bless America !!!

If you found this a “Tear-Jerker Soap Opera” you missed the point: These victims mattered. The reference to Whitman is ridiculous-on autopsy, he had a brain tumor in his amygdala. Your comments about gun control at this time in our society and your conclusion the US is “very morally sick” reflects a paucity of historical or current understanding of weapons in the US. The horse was out of the stable long before gun control laws. Please take your complaints where they matter: The Congress and the NRA. Their lobby is incredibly powerful and it is not supported in “contributions” by individuals: This is Corporate Spending. The NRA spends millions to lobby for their “rights” and their
“membership” numbers are manufactured and inflated by Remington, Smith and Wesson etc.
The alleged “membership” reported by the NRA is corporate spending that numerically includes everyone employed by their corporations and suppliers (likely including the “Emotional Support” animals in their manufacturing facilities. /s)
