  • The Pentax 400mm f4 lens uses the OUTER bayonet ring to attach to the camera body. It is tricky to attach and detach if you have not done it for a while.
CAUTION! DO NOT TIGHTEN THE BLACK RETAINING RING. IT WILL STICK TIGHT!!! That is when the lens is off the camera and you try to put the rear lens cap on. Be very careful to just reach the inmost turn and stop. It untightens counter clockwise looking at the back end.

The filter must be on the side towards the subject and the adapter is towards the operator. Or bassackwards.

Sir, how is the image quality and usability of this lens? I’ve just got one from ebay.

I took a series of shots of the same subjects around my neighborhood using it and other lesser lenses and they all were good. I only use black and white. It requires a heavy tripod. Mirror lock up helps. Cable release. Bracket so you do not need to return as it is heavy to carry. Always bracket in case of flakey film. I think you will like it.

Thanks for replying. I’m just new to photography as a hobbyist and my project is to build a system out of old camera and lenses because I couln’t afford the modern ones. I got a canon 5d (1st version), Tokina 20-35mm f2.8, Canon FD 200mm f2.8, Canon STM 50mm f1.8 (only the modern lens in the group) and the last is this SMC Takumar 400mm f4 that I have just ordered last night. I was hesitant at first because there are no reviews here in youtube regarding this lens except for this one and the filter related matter. Besides it’s a little more expensive than the other lenses I got. while my budget is very tight. However the price is still tempting when I compared it with the other 400s with f4 available. So, I wish I did a right decision.

The Canon 5D no1 is also what I have, however, I use the Pentax 6x7 film camera then enlarge the film onto 16x20 paper in the darkroom. The 5d is my toy and used for Internet posts.

I used to post reports on Pentax 67 or 6x7 groups on FB and did that 2 years ago on the 400mm lens. Though, pictures removed from storage place in Flicker so they may not show.
