While all of them are great in combat. We can all agree that the blades of exile offer a lot more fast paced moves and animations. + The way kratos moves with them is just phenomenal.
Blades of Chaos will always remain my favorite, because of the bone chilling history behind it. I can still hear Gaia's voice narrating the words "the Blades of Chaos, forged in the fowlest depths of Hades, once attached they remain chained and seared into the flesh of the bearer as a permanent reminder of Kratos's pledge".
The blades of Chaos is iconic, but Exile has the best feature, allowing you to launch yourself to an enemy never gets old. My favorite though is the blades of Athena from the start of GoW II

I really like the Ascension version of the blades because of the elemental versions they each have, fire,ice, souls and Lightning. Clever way to give the blades more move sets and to tie the magic into them. Plus usually the blades overshadow any other weapons you obtain so it makes sense to just concentrate all effort on making the blades the focus just with different powers
it was disappointing for me when you didnt have an option in gow 2 to use the Blue blades of Athena. Especially in new game+. they looked sick and performed nicely
You can use them when you unlock god armor (after finishing the challenges) but i never use that armor. Just does a lot of damage AND the blades are blue but the chains are red for some fucked up reason :D
My favorite version of the blades are the gold ones you get at the end of the first game. They’re just a nice reward for beating game no matter the difficulty

Damage: Blades of Exile Crowd Control: Blades of Chaos (GoW1) Sound FX: Blades of Chaos (2018) Speed: Blades of Chaos (Ascension) - The game by itself is insanity with it's speed Moves: Blades of Exile Some fun little facts, the Blades of Athena in GoW3 takes way longer to kill enemies because the damage output is the same as the Blades of Exile at level 1, same goes for the golden and blue Athena's Blades from the start of GoW2, they do the same damage as their level 1 counterparts from later in the game, i think devs did this so you're not too overpowered right by the beggining of the games. Anyway sorry for the long text, really aprecciate how deep you went with this video, thanks man, for real, really shows your love for this.
I absolutely agree with level 3 athena design! It looks so good! And the blades of athena in gow3 got done dirty. I mean you unlock an artifact in that game that allows you to play the whole game with them. Now with all that said. They should've had normal damage output.

Blades of Exile do more damage than Athena. In GoW3 atleast. The GoW1 had a very nice moveset imo. Many moves who stayed unique to that game unfortunately.

Tbh the blue blade's of athena are my personal fav mainly for the way it looks with yellow/gold design but move wise it's very much solid for it's combo's and i found it the easier out of all the blades to mix combo attack's without repeating the same combination of move sequence's plus the speed of which the blades of athena goes anyway usually makes up for it's short comings.
Theres something you forgot tô mention in the Blades of Athena in GOWIII that separate them to the Blades of Exile, If you use L1+X Kratos uses the Icarus wings tô Launch ALL enemies arround on the Air with you is a good crowd Control ability being able to throw a lot of enemies in the Air at once for combos, i really wanted that Santa Mônica ported the Greek saga to PC where people could make a mod where you can access both Blades at once in one single playtrough (maybe activation working like the DarkSlayer Style in DMC4 by pressing up twice)
I agree with you for the blades of exile, you can grab even the minotaurs that shit is crazy. The other reason I really like the god of war 3 is that you can do so many combos with the other weapons too!!!
one thing you forgot to ever mention is that The Blades Of Athena in GOW3 keep the base damage throughout the game. You cannot upgrade the damage meaning you're doing the damage you were doing at the beginning of the game. While The Blades Of Exile are able to be upgraded and gain more damage. I wish the damage carried over to Athena's blades when you use the item but i though I should mention it.
They should allow more weapon customisation in the next god of war game, imagine if they allowed you to change the skin the for blades of chaos and you could have the blades of exile or blades of Athena
Well your wish only partly came true with the Valhalla dlc. You can change the blades appearance but only in regards to their upgraded looks. I do hope they add in some skins for the blades of Athena and exile later on.

Kinda wish there was at least one set for the blades of chaos in God of war (2018) where they take spartan inspiration over the Norse inspiration. Just something to differentiate the axe and the blades in terms of looks. Let kratos's loadout have variety again like in the other god of war games. Another thing, give us skins based on the other games, let's us rock the classic goatee in HDR

32:04 that hold square is the fastest way to stack multiple "thera's bombs" in the enemies, really good to take down the armored cyclops as the bombs will destroy a piece of armor and stagger him each time. If I'm not mistaken, every combo finisher stacks a thera's bomb in enemies, witch usually staggers them, that's something that I always find usefull against crowds, becaus you can do square > quare > turn thera's bane + triangle, you'll put a bomb in almost everyone in the screen
Ascension Blades of Chaos will always be my favorite simply because of the sound design. they really made the blades sound the way they should when you slam them to the ground and the chains whipping and jingling around and the echo of the zeus lightning and Ares fire explosions are absolutely phenomenal
The god version of the blades of Athena in ghost of Sparta is my favorite since they stay gold and I love the lava blades mechanic making you do more damage in short Bursts
Didn't play the psp games nor ascension but this is my list from best to worse -Exile -blades of athena from both gow2 and 3 -Gow 2005 blades of chaos -Gow 2018 blades of chaos (they weren't even considering them until late in development they feel rushed as hell, glad they look more refined in ragnarok)
My favourite is the final level of the Blades of Chaos in the first game, i just love the color and the moves... Especially dodging then pressing X and holding square

So quick question, what are the differences between the blades of chaos vs blades of Athena overall? If they are the same weapons then why did they go back to being the blades of Chaos in GOW 4?
I'm a little fuzzy on it but if I remember correctly the blades of Athena were a gift for him becoming a God. The blade of chaos however were bound to him by Ares. So he broke the blades of Athena and Exile but the blades of Chaos are always bound to him. I'm not sure exactly how it works but I don't think they ever really explained it beyond this point.
Blades of Chaos - Given to Kratos by Ares as a symbol of his servitude to Ares. Ares ripped them away from Kratos at the end of the first game. They were seared to Kratos' arms. Eventually found their way back to him before GOW 2018 Blades of Athena - Given to him by Athena when he became God of War after killing Ares. Was destroyed when Kratos fell into the River Styx in Gow3 Blades of Exile - Athena took the remains of the destroyed blades of Athena and transformed them into the Blades of Exile. Abandoned at the end of Gow3 when Kratos decided to beat Zeus to death
Blades of exile are more fast because the blades takes less time to kill the enemies and that's the literal use of blades - to kill the enemies and blades of exile are fast in that so why blades of athena are slower than blades of exile
Blades of Chaos from the first game has always been my favorite, just because of the looks of the blades from upgrading it. The first level which makes it look like the flames are at its weakest, and you can see how tiny it is when attacking. And it continues to get more aggressive, and bigger, until it reaches max level, where things are at its biggest, and brightest. Always loved the red and white color.
22:48 If you perform this attack in the air while spamming circle instead of holding it, you get the same area damage but faster, unfortunately it won't change the recovery time, but it executes faster.
GOW 3 started right before GOW 2 ends his combos, attacks were same and Stats were already maxed out, So they have to trick the players that Kretos is powerful as always at the same time nerfing the blades If they don't, blades will just feel crap because similar thing happened in GOW 2
Im more attached to the blades of athena than anything else. You have them on gow2, gow3 (it is also the blade of exile at heart), and ghost of sparta. That is the most used blades in god of war so i like em the most. It and blades of chaos also can also be used to skip the long initial attack animation of the triangle move so its great on large monsters.
In regards to the speed of the blades, for God of War 4 the developers changed the frame rate to 30 fps whilst the other games are 60fps, imagine if GOW 4 was 60fps 😳.

I'm having trouble with the part I'm fighting clones in myself (near the finale) going after his wife and daughter on hard mode (Sparta), and despite having them and my entire arsenal maxed out… I'm *not* really doing much damage killing them and keeping his family alive… at the same time.
The blades of chaos in gow 1 are super clunky to use, i actually prefer using the blade of artemis, although the blades of exiles are powerful , i prefer the blades of athena, i love their combo in 2, ghost of sparta and 3 and that vortex spell you get when using them in 3 is much more fun to use than that lame arrow rain spell
I do love the nordic runes on the Blades in the newest God of War! They look so clean and sharp at max upgrade! And the sound of the Chains is nice. I loved the sound even back in God of War Ascension
The Blades of Exile are 100% my absolute favorite blades in the entire series! The way they move, the way Kratos annihilates everything dumb enough to get in his way, and the designs are just top freaking notch! Also that part at [26:50]. Why does that kill me literally *EVERY TIME?!*
Interestingly, Chains of Olympus was supposed to have the same combos as GoW1 but strangely they are the same combos as GoW2, the same goes for Ascension, it has similar combos to Blades of Exile from GoW3 and not the same from GoW1, Ghost of Sparta merged combos from GoW2 & 3.

Blades of chaos from gow4 are my favourite Because it really have ever best thing from many blades example Sprint R1 will cause the spin attack from god of war 2 where you hold square And while attacking holding square will cause kratos to execute Hercules valur from gow 3's blades of exile In the newer gow games thanks to the lack of magic attacks they outfitted every weapon with a thera's bane like power power up that is earned when a player does a said no of combos making combat feel rewarding And gow 2018 focused more on customisability and freedom and expression from player rather than the old games you get what you see logic not only the blades have a lot of moves in compensation for the lack of magic but also the runic attack add to the experience as they can be equipped with whatever you want And every other moves from og god of war still exists and as a replacement to magic system you get boi's electric arrows with multiple ruinc attack and mimir's head to weaken enimies and cover them in bifrost and L1+Traingle moves in Ragnarok provided versitality through elements attack that effect enemies like slowing them or burning them
The Blue and Gold Athenas Blades are my Favorite, but the Moveset at the End of GoW 2 is better. That Unlimited Combo with the Cyclone at the End. But for me that Blue and Gold is just too good. The Colors of a Champion.

That attack you mentioned is VERY VERY good BUT
It's not a blades attack :) that's why i didn't include it

If I'm not mistaken, every combo finisher stacks a thera's bomb in enemies, witch usually staggers them, that's something that I always find usefull against crowds, becaus you can do square > quare > turn thera's bane + triangle, you'll put a bomb in almost everyone in the screen
Ascension Blades of Chaos will always be my favorite simply because of the sound design. they really made the blades sound the way they should when you slam them to the ground and the chains whipping and jingling around and the echo of the zeus lightning and Ares fire explosions are absolutely phenomenal

For me personally it's between god of war 3, 4 and ascension, but the winner is god of war 3. I love being able to grapple enemies with the blades.
The god version of the blades of Athena in ghost of Sparta is my favorite since they stay gold and I love the lava blades mechanic making you do more damage in short Bursts

Didn't play the psp games nor ascension but this is my list from best to worse
-Exile
-blades of athena from both gow2 and 3
-Gow 2005 blades of chaos
-Gow 2018 blades of chaos (they weren't even considering them until late in development they feel rushed as hell, glad they look more refined in ragnarok)
My favourite is the final level of the Blades of Chaos in the first game, i just love the color and the moves... Especially dodging then pressing X and holding square
I like blades of chaos but it was always my favorite the blades of Athena from gow 2 I mean they look in gow 3 so clean and nice when in gow 2 they are mostly main weapons

I love all of the blades but my favourites are certainly the Blades of Athena from GoW 2. There isn't any particular thing that makes them my favourite it is just that they are the best feeling blades imo and GoW 2 is my favourite game of the series in general

So quick question, what are the differences between the blades of chaos vs blades of Athena overall? If they are the same weapons then why did they go back to being the blades of Chaos in GOW 4?
I'm a little fuzzy on it but if I remember correctly the blades of Athena were a gift for him becoming a God. The blade of chaos however were bound to him by Ares. So he broke the blades of Athena and Exile but the blades of Chaos are always bound to him. I'm not sure exactly how it works but I don't think they ever really explained it beyond this point.
Blades of Chaos
- Given to Kratos by Ares as a symbol of his servitude to Ares. Ares ripped them away from Kratos at the end of the first game. They were seared to Kratos' arms. Eventually found their way back to him before GOW 2018
Blades of Athena
- Given to him by Athena when he became God of War after killing Ares. Was destroyed when Kratos fell into the River Styx in Gow3
Blades of Exile
- Athena took the remains of the destroyed blades of Athena and transformed them into the Blades of Exile. Abandoned at the end of Gow3 when Kratos decided to beat Zeus to death

Blades of exile are more fast because the blades takes less time to kill the enemies and that's the literal use of blades - to kill the enemies and blades of exile are fast in that so why blades of athena are slower than blades of exile

Blades of Chaos from the first game has always been my favorite, just because of the looks of the blades from upgrading it. The first level which makes it look like the flames are at its weakest, and you can see how tiny it is when attacking.
And it continues to get more aggressive, and bigger, until it reaches max level, where things are at its biggest, and brightest. Always loved the red and white color.

GOW 3 started right before GOW 2 ends his combos, attacks were same and Stats were already maxed out, So they have to trick the players that Kretos is powerful as always at the same time nerfing the blades
If they don't, blades will just feel crap because similar thing happened in GOW 2

Im more attached to the blades of athena than anything else. You have them on gow2, gow3 (it is also the blade of exile at heart), and ghost of sparta. That is the most used blades in god of war so i like em the most. It and blades of chaos also can also be used to skip the long initial attack animation of the triangle move so its great on large monsters.

In regards to the speed of the blades, for God of War 4 the developers changed the frame rate to 30 fps whilst the other games are 60fps, imagine if GOW 4 was 60fps 😳.

I'm having trouble with the part I'm fighting clones in myself (near the finale) going after his wife and daughter on hard mode (Sparta), and despite having them and my entire arsenal maxed out… I'm *not* really doing much damage killing them and keeping his family alive… at the same time.

The 2018 blades of chaos be looking fresh
The blades of chaos in gow 1 are super clunky to use, i actually prefer using the blade of artemis, although the blades of exiles are powerful , i prefer the blades of athena, i love their combo in 2, ghost of sparta and 3 and that vortex spell you get when using them in 3 is much more fun to use than that lame arrow rain spell
My favorite with the gilded Athena blades at the end of 05'. The gold and green hits for me.
I do love the nordic runes on the Blades in the newest God of War!
They look so clean and sharp at max upgrade! And the sound of the Chains is nice. I loved the sound even back in God of War Ascension

Interestingly, Chains of Olympus was supposed to have the same combos as GoW1 but strangely they are the same combos as GoW2, the same goes for Ascension, it has similar combos to Blades of Exile from GoW3 and not the same from GoW1, Ghost of Sparta merged combos from GoW2 & 3.

Ghost of Sparta Blade of Chaos and Athena Bera Bane has better Design than Blade of Exiles
Design: Blades of Athena (god power/blue).
Damage: Blades of Exile.
Crowd Control: Honestly idk lol.
Sound Effects: Blades of Athena (but only when hitting the soldiers from Rhodes) and Exile for everything else.
Speed: Blades of Athena.
Moves: Blades of Exile

Because it really have ever best thing from many blades example Sprint R1 will cause the spin attack from god of war 2 where you hold square
And while attacking holding square will cause kratos to execute Hercules valur from gow 3's blades of exile
In the newer gow games thanks to the lack of magic attacks they outfitted every weapon with a thera's bane like power power up that is earned when a player does a said no of combos making combat feel rewarding
And gow 2018 focused more on customisability and freedom and expression from player rather than the old games you get what you see logic not only the blades have a lot of moves in compensation for the lack of magic but also the runic attack add to the experience as they can be equipped with whatever you want
And every other moves from og god of war still exists and as a replacement to magic system you get boi's electric arrows with multiple ruinc attack and mimir's head to weaken enimies and cover them in bifrost and L1+Traingle moves in Ragnarok provided versitality through elements attack that effect enemies like slowing them or burning them
Ascension’s move design is quite ambitious.
The Blue and Gold Athenas Blades are my Favorite, but the Moveset at the End of GoW 2 is better. That Unlimited Combo with the Cyclone at the End. But for me that Blue and Gold is just too good. The Colors of a Champion.
