I’ve had Alfie for 4.5 years and we’ve never spent a night apart. We live in London UK and have travelled much of Western Europe together by car. I could never leave him at a boarding home… pretty sure we’d both suffer separation anxiety. I couldn’t enjoy a vacation knowing he’d be missing me. In emergencies I’ve left him with friends and family ( people he knows and loves) for up to 12 hours but we’re always excited to see each other again. Leaving him alone with strangers for a few days would break my heart 😢

We only put our shiba in a boarding house once. When we picked him up, the people at the boarding house said he did not go to the bathroom all that day and night. So after we paid and took him out to the car, as soon as he was out of the building, he went pee for the longest we had ever seen him pee. So I suspect it was from the whole time we were gone. We did not take him to anymore boarding houses after that. We had friends or relatives stop by our house to check in on him and feed/water him.

We left our shiba at my parents for a bit. And he also didn't seem that excited to see us when we returned. 😅 but he was happy to be home and return to his normal routine.

Humans are the same! So if you find a "distance" it's a self-preservation switch in their minds. They've felt stress at separation from the pack and then reconfigured their mindset with basic needs eg hunger, exercise etc.
If boarding maybe a few dummy visits to the place and even 1-night stay to break the ice in before a longer 3+ day separation might be a good idea to habituate them and make them think they will see you shortly again? Best to keep the dog with relatives who they know for a long time if possible tbh and such a house they are regular visitors of and even better if they have a dog too so they join their second pack. Edit: Pet sitter at home also as someone else said.
They'll warm back up after a bit but the change in their mindset is wearing off and feeling secure with the pack again.
As for going wild again, the one thing that will increase that is exposure to hunting prey: It's the biggest buzz dogs get and natural for them. But of course you lose control of them more with such exposure so for Shiba owners that's a tricky one.

I wouldn't say that they hold grudges persay, but they are affected by a boarding house especially if it's a place they've never been/they don't have experience spending long periods of time (even if it's a few hours at a doggy daycare) away from home. Their experience at the boarding house also affects them and just in general the fact that they don't know what's happening or why their humans left them or why they aren't home. I think it can be traumatic for some dogs and a reset for others while some are mostly fine. It's a lot like when I first got my shiba- he had no idea why he left the farm with his family and everyone and everything he'd always known to be in my home and apart of my family, but now this is his home as much as it's mine. But at first it was an adjustment period.

My mom boarded her schnauzer for a week and definitely noticed a difference when he was back home. She never boarded him again.

I’m glad u posted this . Bcs my 5 month Shiba goes crazy if I’m gone for 2 hrs I can’t imagine giving him to a facility for 5 days . I honestly would be scared if he falls in love with another human or if the think “well they Gave me up now”

We went to a wedding out of state. Took him to a boarding facility on a Friday morning and picked him up on Monday morning when the facility opened. Koby , our quirky Sheba Inu didn’t want to come to me. Her preferred to stay by the attendant. When I did return home , he was all over my mother and played with the cat but gave me the cold shoulder. So I guess , I was on his naughty list

To your shiba, you are the source of safety and comfort. He thrust only you. He is loyal to you only. So no worry. You are his most important human being

I was told by the boarding facility that my Canaan ripped the blankets that were placed in her cage to shreds due to boredom (?)--or, after reading this post--feelings of betrayal/abandonment!! My Canaan returned to her old, comfortable self the day after returning home.🤔
    Miss you, Mina! RIP
    Jimmy--you are STILL the best😘

I have to leave my shiba with my mom and brother for weeks at a time while I actually work on the other side of the country. She stays in the same house and the same yard. I think she misses me and she sulks and hides under the bed, she will go and stay on my bed for a few days, she might lose her appetite, or conversely, overeat herself. When I return she’s happy, but aloof for the first few days, and then snuggles back in, but it takes a few days for her to trust me again.

We have an Akita and had not spent a night away until almost a year ago when we had no other choice. Prior to our necessary 3-day trip we boarded her for 1-night as a trial. In both cases, she was excited to see us, but more excited to get into the car. If she did hold a grudge, it was not very long. By the way we are in Washington also and curious what boarding facility you went to? Love your Shiba and videos.

What if it's not about grudges rather he might be finding it strange that there are no other dogs or many people around. Kinda a bit confused. I've just subbed to your channel for the seriousness you show by dealing with his issues and feelings. Great example and he's so adorable!

We had our neighbor watch our Odin shiba inu for about the same amount of days and he took some time to readjust back to his Norma routine, during that 2 1/2 week transition from being around humans all day n night n other dogs. It will take time for the dogos to be back to themselves be patient with them! 🤙🏼

My parents golden retrievers will purposely pee on my parents lawn chairs after a return from boarding. My boston terrier will poop trail on the patio to the grass after every boarding. They definitely hold grudges.🤣

I put my Shiba overnight at a expensive boarding place similar to the one Jimmy went to except they are individual room with webcam. He was very anxious to leave the place and actually was quite affectionate when we picked him up.
That's for 1 nite have a feeling it would be different for multiple days.
