I work in the service industry and handle a lot of coins. I kept all the silver I came across, but never knew much about errors and variations. Learning about it now through this channel and others including Coin Opp, I am KICKING MYSELF! I have come across nearly every error type from RPMs to clipped planchets, to Doubled dies and off metal errors... I was too clueless to save them! I even once saw a penny at least 40% off center. Thank you for the education, now I'm learning what to keep and throw back. Once I make it through sorting this years jar of coins, I may try some rolled coins from the bank.
You didn't keep the off ctr.? I'd be kicking myself! I found a 25 - 30% off ctr. state quarter a few years back. I was unaware of coin errors. The rest, as they say, is history.
I had at least two DDO Bicentennial Quarters slip out of my hands back in the early 2000's...but I'm still more than blessed for the Quarter I do have :). If you look for your dream coin long enough you will find it.
Hey BlueRidge, I have just recently become very interested in U.S. currency; and have started my own small collection, using you as a reference, and basically a guide to my "cherry-picking" desires... I believe that I have come across many error coins you have referenced, and than some... I have yet to venture into sending anything to be graded; but out of every popular collector that I have viewed, you have my utmost respect, and I feel we have similar motives... That being said: I will tell you that I love in a small city, where two 1943 copper pennies are owned, and my local dealer has over twenty 1955 DD's graded at a minimum of me 55... fyi. (he showed me things that would blow your mind) I was hoping that somehow I could pick your brain a little bit, or maybe we could help eachother...
Transitional Coins of any year or denomination is rare. I have a 1941 penny that l wondered why it was yellowish, but didn't look plated. It was mentioned in one video that there were a small amount of 1941pennies on planchets from South America.
I have the exact 1942 No mint mark Jefferson Nickel in better condition that weighs 4.8g's, what other ways can you tell if it's 35% silver when it shouldn't be besides taking the coin to a metallurgists?
...just found my first error mint coin. 1989D memorial...reverse is doubled on top words. it's a dirty coin, what is best way to get rid of crud? Have used warm soapy water, crud is still there.
Hi, I have a interesting Quarter, its a 1967,, what's odd is it appears to be silver, now I've spoke about this on other sights and even called coin shops and I get the same response; "they stopped making siler coins in 64". Before I became a RN I worked as a electo-plater, we used to playe pocket change silver, gold etc just for fun, this coin is not plated, the wt is off, the rim is silver and I even took a jewelry file and (I know) made a mark in between the grooves on the rim. (not deep) and no copper, it even smells like silver. From my experience plating (detail is lost) everyone says it cant be a error, any thoughts?
every nickel I pick up at that time weighs 4.7 g m how can u tell if it silver planchet or not I weigh the regular nickel and the silver one and it shows they weigh the same amount
i need to know all the dime dates I should hold on to when I go thru my change and rolls. thanks. i have a 1976 small and large date dime. i haven't seen it listed the # 7 looks slimmer and I noticed the top of # 6 lays a little to the right of mintmark. let me know both answers
Thanks again BlueRidge. I love searching circulated coinage because you just never know what's floating around out there. Keep up the good work. See ya in the next one.
Can you explain how to tell if something is off? Like what would you look for specifically in these examples that would be a rip off that you would be looking at something on the wrong metal?
I just started coin searching and I happened to find a penny with the Lincoln statute on the back has two heads. I don't know if it's worth anything because I don't know who to take it too. just throwing it out there.
I found a 1967 when I very first started coin roll hunting about six months ago and the dealer or a dealer told me that something it it was normal or something and I did not think so but it now that I see this I know it was a 67 with a Silverback
i been watching alot videos about coins,so i dont know if iam lucky but i aready find like 200,pennies with double dye is that normal?i have 2000,2001,2002,2003,2005,2007,2015 2016,2011,2012,double dye is that normal??every time i look at a penny is double dye is that normal or iam just lucky 1980,1990,thaey all double dies is that normal??
thank you for make this video to show me ,I had found some of 1983 but I never know that who will buying this coin ? please reply if you know where I can sale my coin.
you do a great job! could you please do more on errors? i have a bunch of 1939 jeffersons with various distinct errors, some obverse, some reverse...most show some minor doubling in the monticello but are totally different errors...thanks...well done!
W I was literally looking at a 1965 dime wondering if it was silver when you listed it on this video… Is there anyway to tell for sure? I Think that it is I also have three 1965 quarters that I had been asking myself the same question... wondering if they were silver or not I think one is for sure but it's kind a got a lot of Gunk on it and it's a little bit of stained..what should I do?
hey boss!! first of all you're totally awesome!!!! i was wondering if you could clarify for some viewers... on this coin and several others that I have seen in your videos / vidpics, there are 3 equal marks showing atmospheric corrosion and 3 that are less corroded. I know the reason, but if you can explain to others would be better than me explaining in your comment area. Keep the faith brother, your vids are TOP-NOTCH!!!!! MAJOR props to you and your crew!!! T. just curious tho, what state you live in? i would totally love to attend a workshop if you do that type of thing.
Thanks once again for this great information. Knowing that there's so much more to all of this, something like this just makes it a little easier and quicker. Especially for those of us with out patients or focus! LOL
What I don't get is 42 to 45 Nicholas were supposed to be struck on silver so how is it a mint error if it was struck on silver the second coin is a 42 nickel that was supposedly a mint error that was struck on silver I don't get it
omg omg omg love this video!!! u totally went over every coin and its yr ..love the pics..ive read about these and started weighing every coin and my family thinks im crazy lol...but please answer me this u explained everything in with every coin but only gave the actual weight its sapppse to be and what it really was for the penny but no weight for the 42 nickel or 65 dime or 65 quarter???? please please answer i have been researching for weeks and basically learned more in ur little 10 min video tgen i did online!!! if u could just answer the weight on the rest of the coins i will know what to look for ..thanx so much:-):-):-):-):-):-)
Sadly you'd either have to basically get it electro-scoped for metal composition...or trust a grading place to figure out whether it is or not. Sadly it can be pretty risky to work with the more rare/ridiculous coins because, at the end of the day, Coin "Experts" are often the type who made a living off of taking advantage of people. I've had more than one try to rip me off blatantly...so it's a little sketchy to say the least. Especially when you consider that PCGS was virtually brand new in 1993, and the MS-65 to 70 scale is an invention of the grading companies less than 25 years old.
Being offered are 45 ( forty five) 2017 pennies. ALL are in mint condition and I would grade them as follows. 90% MS 66. 5% MS 67 and 5% MS 68 or 69. 25,000 OBO ( an absolute STEAL in my opinion)
Send them to PCGS before you sell them. If you get the grades you say they are, you might get close to your ask. But no one, and I mean no one, will pay that for a common roll of raw coins.
second time watching the video and commented last time with no response :( have same question I know about the weight for the penny it's 2.5 and 3.1 but what would difference in weight be for the nickel dime and quarter?? like if I have a 1942 which I have a bunch and I weigh them how much r they sapppse to weigh and what would the wrong metal one weigh? please answer!! Same here thanks a lot silver hound you have opened up a window to no end of findings I literally have found a lot I mean a lot of metal errors. My grandparents have been saving since For the 40s and to Nows date literally have dimes nickels pennies quarters all wrong metal errorsAnd the weight between the right coin is a big difference email me I’ll send you pictures

I just went thru my pennies found 67 1983 some with D and I weighed them all were 2.5 grams sucks, but i found about a dollars worth of wheaties. Ive yet to go through them.

What should the weight of the 1983 copper penny be and how much should a regular penny weigh?
A copper cent weighs 3.1g and a copper-plated zinc cent weighs 2.5g. Zinc has a lower density.
can you please hint on WHY the flange below the date is so thin on this specific coin? is it a strike error or is it circulation wear?

I have a 1942 just like this no mint mark on reverse
Ballad of Janine, it's most likely the regular cupronickel composition, but there is the possibility that it is actually a 35% silver nickel.
Maybe a stupid question; but does the rim have the copper stripe!?!? Or not necessarily?

Are you saying the only way to tell is weight ?
So if nickels are 5grams how would you be able to differentiate between a sliver 46 and nickel 46?

I'm super blessed in that regard. I've had more than one...heck I've LOST more than one over time worth quite a bit and I'm still happy as a lark.
I have a 1965 quarter how do I know what it's worth
You would first need to know what composition it's made of. If it isn't silver, and it isn't uncirculated, and it isn't a doubled-die...then it's worth a quarter.
There are plenty of resources to find these things out; but you'll need to do a lot more than just figure out the date of the coin if you don't want to be taken advantage of by any coin dealer nation wide. If they know you know nothing about the coin they won't hesitate to buy it for cents on the dollar, or assume you potentially stole it if it is valuable.
