      As a lifelong Cubs fan, all the respect in the world to you for saying that. Long time fans of any team know that this whole situation was ridiculous, and a ton of respect to Happ and Willy for how they handled it all. I was a bit surprised Mikolas got tossed at first, but when I thought about it for a minute, it was the correct application of the rule. If you wanna hit a guy, gotta make sure you don’t miss.

    Note to pitchers: When you're obviously throwing at the batter in retaliation, 1. Get it right first time, 2. Don't throw a hissy fit when you're caught bang to rights.
    The only thing more pathetic than the deliberate hit is the playing dumb about it.

    Mikolas was wrong in every aspect here, like he didn't even know his catcher well enough to know that Happ played with him for 6 years and there would be no way it was intentional. Feels like Mikolas saw this and was like "finally an opportunity to hit someone with a pitch".

      No, the true worst part is that this is considered status quo. "You hit my guy by accident, so by the unspoken rules of the game, I literally have to hit you or else I won't be part of the cool kids club anymore."

      The size and location of batters boxes haven't changed in like 100 years. It's not possible for batters to be crowding any closer than they have been.

    I’m surprised you didn’t mention the announcers on the cardinals broadcast. It was probably the most biased commentary I’ve ever heard.
    After the first pitch inside, they were like “well of course you gotta hit him” but then when the second pitch hit him, they changed to “how can you eject him for that? There was no intent!”

    Pathetic. No batter would intentionally do that no matter how much hatred existed between players/teams. And Happ and Contreras clearly don't hate each other after being teammates and hugging it out. Mikolas trying to hit him twice and then acting innocent is just embarrassing.

    I feel like there needs to be something done to prevent catchers from getting smashed in the head with bats. I don't remember this ever happening when I was younger, but seems to be way more frequent now.

      I got an idea, if the batter is, presumably in the batter box, the catcher should be back enough, like maybe a designated spot, somewhere he can't possibly be hit by a back swing

    This feels like something else ABS challenges or outright robo zones could eliminate. If the pitch is going to be called right automatically, there's no need for catchers to feel pressured to crowd in further to try and deceive the ump/steal strikes.

    I'm a goalie in hockey and don't get why more backcatchers don't use the hockey style mask. Like he wouldn't have gotten hurt there if he had the hockey style mask on. It would have bounced off the mask and made his ears ring but he would be fine

      ​@@jakestine4753 Many catchers believe Hockey style masks increase the risk of concussion and don't have enough padding on the forehead. I don't know if its true or a myth but that's why a lot of catchers don't wear them. Saying "look at Yadi" isn't going to change their minds.

      @@louiscypher4186 They are actually better for hits to the forehead as well. Look at the new style All-star hockey style helmets. They are a far superior design to any mask and skull cap.

    Did Mikolas not realize it was painfully obvious how intentional it was after he missed the first one and then Knizner doesn't even call a pitch for the next pitch since he obviously knew Mikolas said he was gonna hit him.

    This is exactly the BS the game needs less of. How do you "get back" for an accident, esp. one everyone clearly knew was an accident? Baseball's unwritten rules are f'n ridiculous. Just play the game, and cop to it when it's that obvious. Don't lie. It's karma that it ended up winning the game for the Cubs, even more so given their long and bitter rivalry.

    This was completely ridiculous. Happ didn't hit Contraras on purpose, Contraras knew it(based on the fact that they hugged after it happened) and Mr. Mikolas decided to drill Happ anyway.

    My thing is this, there’s only like 3 dudes in the league that do this on a regular basis and we all know which guys do it cause they do it so much, happ is known for hitting catchers with his back swing, u shouldn’t be allowed to just swing as far back as u want and consistently hit catchers, if everybody was doing it it’s one thing but it’s a couple guys that do it, if u can’t control ur swing to the point ur making catchers bleed, u should be getting hit, props to mikolas

    What is your opinion about the HBP of Amaya in the 9th inning of this game Jomboy???? It was also a deliberate pitch in a game they were losing and an obvious 3rd retaliatory pitch as well. The backup catcher comes up in the 9th inning as a pinch hitter and the first pitch goes to his hip as well.
