- Ninth installment of LOL:52, 1980. A weekly discussion of a "significant" album for each year from 1972 up to now. Usually alternative/indie selections, with the odd curveball chucked in to keep it lively! Midweek video drops, every week this year...
THIS EPISODE....1980, Peter Gabriel, and "Peter Gabriel (3/Melt)"
Thanks for watching!
It’s getting hard for me to finish these because I need to stop and listen to half of what is mentioned here.
Such a good series. A real pleasure to listen to someone who knows and loves music this much.
Absolutely love the series and the choices!
The Damned , The black Album for me but what a great selection sir.
Great choice. I agree it is the most complete of his albums, even though only Games and Biko likely to appear on an 80’s style Best of album
This series is becoming a highlight of the week for me, thanks so much!
Thanks, really glad to hear you're enjoying it. I was a bit worried I might be overcommitting myself, by basically signing up to a rain-or-shine once a week video for the whole year...but I'm having fun doing these. It's become almost like a journaling-type exercise, giving me an opportunity to reflect back on times I haven't thought about in ages. D
I like this album quite a bit, kinda where his sound become a bit more firm and denoted where he was going
My dad had ‘Us’ on in the car when I was young so it’s stuck with me a little more
Interesting choice. I think Paul Weller played on this one too; covering a lot of ground with those collaborators.
Yes, he did. I think he was recording in the studio/room next door, and Gabriel just asked if he would mind playing on a track for him. IIRC, it was either "Family Snapshot" and/or "And Through The Wire". Cheers, D
Nice pick, makes me want to pull out the album for another spin! Excellent contributions from Phil Collins (again) that would definitely have consequences on the sound of the decade to come. But seriously...
Yeah, I wonder what "In The Air Tonight" would have sounded like without this "dry run" on Melt. Hugh Padgham was Lillywhite's engineer on this album too, and he followed Collins into his solo stuff, producing all of his '80s albums, I think. Cheers, D
@@discellany "Some stranger to you and me..." *loud cymbal splash* 😮
Excellent choice! Is it his best? Quite possibly. The German language version is worth checking out (as is the German version of his fourth solo LP).
Now that's interesting... I wasn't aware but reading the wiki, the German language versions should be interesting to compare.
Vielen Dank! That there is the limit of my decades-old GCSE in German, although (to blow my own trumpet) I did get an A! Must admit, I am very intrigued to hear Gabriel's interpretation of a German version...it's an interesting but very "constructed" language, which doesn't always lend itself to "flow" and expressiveness. I will have to chase them up! D
Maybe it’s just my personal taste but I find Melt to be dated and while I would visit it I wouldn’t want to live in it. Remain in light and Fear of music sound good no matter how many times one listens to it.
I get that. My first Gabriel was "So", which I listen to very rarely nowadays...it sounds more dated to me in a way that "Melt" doesn't. Funny. I think its probably a case of "the sounds" you associate with a certain period of your life. But like you say, some albums completely short circuit that and feel timeless, despite the sounds/technology of the recording. The two Talking Heads ones you mention are perfect examples of that. Cheers, D
