i love no matter what you have the unboxing of a new guitar is always exciting. You can have a custom built just for you one of a kind guitar with everything you want and still get excited opening a $500 guitar lol. Love it.
Their higher level semi hollows use a JB/Jazz combo, so it's not surprising that they're using a similar approach here. Having a hotter bridge pickup in a semi hollow seems odd, but I think it's great. The cleans don't have that upper midrange nasal sound as a PAF and have a more balanced sound. Plus it makes for a great middle position sound too.
I couldn't get a good angle to really see for sure, but it does look to me as though the bridge pickup is a lot closer to the strings.....which of course is not an unusual thing. :) So I suspect some of that hot bridge tone comes from there, and could be dialled off if one wanted to just by using the screws and dropping that pickup a bit. I don't know if I'd do that. I like a crunchy bridge pickup. :) But some might prefer that.
I like it that they have all the playability, sound, and quality but ease back on the ornate nature. I like the look of these better than their higher-end guitars. Well done.
Those are the prettiest D’Angelicos I’ve ever seen. Not the blue one, that Rambler blue color’s hideous, but the red and black are gorgeous. Much more appealing to me than their standard tuners and headstock. Now if they’d only offer the Bob Weir Bedford in that red. Or that black. And maybe finish the neck in a thin satin natural rather than gloss paint.
I'm a big fan of the ornate headstocks they usually have. But i can appreciate these simpler versions too. Just wish they would offer one in a natural finish
The 30's cupcake radio knobs are a nice touch. Extra attention to detail. Supro bought the company and invested some money into to make it both affordable but still give it a premium vibe. The PU's have a DeArmand vibe. Both chunky with really nice spank, :-)
Love the Ebony, gorgeous and the diamonds! It chugs!!!! Sounds great like the thick tones when the gain kicks in! Clean sounds great as well! Love the black! Very Lucille! Interesting blue and the red looks really good as well! Thanks Darrell!
Those are very discreet looking for D'Angelico. I like it. Maybe the mini should have had the f-holes made mini as well. Other than that they're great.
The way it comes across on camera is almost like the cauliflower blue you used to find in the big box of crayola crayons. It may still be there but I'm 46, I haven't bought crayons in decades
Guitar companies rarely think about us lefties…should be a law, that all guitars made, come in lefty as well…since we’re all being politically correct!!!!!
As always it's a great review. I have been a D'angelico fan for years. I loved that they stood out above the crowd of "also ran" guitars. Now it looks like the new owners are going on the cheap with the f hole style, head stock and tuners. Welcome to the growing herd of "also ran" guitars. The gig bags looked like they were pretty good and the packaging was above par from what I could see.
Definitely prefer the understated D'Angelico Tour series to their overly ornate (IMHO) other models. That Slate Blue is gorgeous! Maybe a Tour DC Mini might be worth checking out when it hits Canada stores. Now if I could try before buy, but probably not.
I had an excel ss some years ago. great guitar but was to top-heavy. these headstocks seem to be a little bit smaller. Are these models top-heavy as the original ones?
They always have fantastic fretwork! I have 3 of their premier series and they are solid! Oh and the strings that come on these are D'angelico. They are the most comfortable strings I have come across. The pickups I pulled from my D'angelico DC (no F holes) are G&B and they sound fantastic. I believe the ones in my Brighton are Duncan Design (possibly the Hot JB clones). I'm wondering if the Tour series stepped up the pickups or if they are still in that range?
That's straight up periwinkle bro. 100% hahahahaha My mom painted every single bathroom we ever had growing up that color, i know it when i see it. I don't care whatever the company calls it, that's periwinkle
I mainly play superstrat/supertele/RG style guitars but for my next I want a semi hollow and will probably go with a d'angelico when I can afford it. They are so cool, but my main issue with all semihollows is that I hate glossy necks.
I don’t like glossy necks too much either but I recently got a Yamaha Pacifica 612 with a gloss neck but surprisingly it doesn’t stick like other guitars I’ve had which is part of the reason I bought it. I was so surprised when I played it and the neck felt so fast and easy to play, i think maybe it’s just a different kind of lacquer they used.
If I plan on keeping a guitar, then I use scotch brite on the gloss necks. Of course, I wouldn't do it on a $6000 Gibson, but something that costs less than $1000...
Have a D’Angelico Excel Mini DC made in Korea. It’s a fine guitar, well made, playability and tone are fine. For some reason, I pick up my Epiphone Lucille much more often. Is it the aura or the guitar itself? Why would I pick a D’Angelico before a Fender Tele or Strat or Gibson Les Paul, PRS Starla or Santana. How about a video on why your followers play the guitars they play?
Hey Darrell, I absolutely love that guitar! I had already decided to buy the single cut I think in black or blue - not really sure. The head stock is absolutely gorgeous! Normal D'angelico head stock well, way too much for me. I've seen several demos on RUclips of this guitar. People are raving about it. Sounds fantastic. Thanks for a great demo!
I own 2 of their guitars. They are second to none!! Quality is very impressive! If you don't own one then you should. Very nice instruments and very well made.
Have not seen a D'Angelico locally since I was a teenager. They weren't cheap, and they were decent then. (Edit) I wonder what tone pots they used? The attack is hot. I like it. Simple design, elegant, pretty, and functional. Sounds great. Out of my price range, though. These guitars are likely examples of the "law of diminishing return."
Hey Darrell, another great job showing us what's out there in the new lines companies are putting out. Thanks for always showing it then describing the details then jamming all the tones you can . You get so many cool guitar' s from $ 100 - $1000.00's The worlds our oyster with all of them out there..... but, someone like you gives us such a chance to get a great look at what we can have if we want it after you give us your honest opinions...I have personally spoke with you on my gibsons and you have also talked to me about other guitars and I know now, I can trust your knowledge beyond any others without a doubt . You are hands on and you make taking a guitar apart look so easy , do you have help ...??
Oh yeah! I'll grab the smaller one with the nut powder blue! There's something else I gotta have; the sweet looking shirt you have!!! Must feel terrific in the winter. Thanks!!
Simpler, but very Classy. I really like the tones too. Smaller Black one i think . I am not much bigger than a 12 yr old so yeah would be easier to play 👍💯♥️
Hey Darrell, just a head's up; there is somebody out there using your image and sending messages to people in your user comments. I received one. It said I had won something and to message them via Telegram. I honestly fell prey to this and was good to go until whomever said that I have to pay for shipping. Did a few searches on RUclips and see this is common. Anyway, just thought I'd let you know. The part that sucks...well a few...were that I was going to receive a MacBook Pro and black Gibson semi hollow body....and that I was actually communicating with you! HAHA.....anyway, keep up the great work.
I would love to see some of the prog guitar world on this channel. Music Man Majesty, Jason Richardson cutlass, Abasi, Strandberg, Aristides (just to name a few)
D'Angelico: "I guess since Epiphone isn't using their old headstock design...". Jokes aside, I have a nice D'Angelico hollow body and it is a wonderful guitar. Thanks for the content Darrell!
Thanks for wishing us a good day, Darrell. I'd be a lot better day if D'Angelico, Eastman, Schecter, Firefly and Xaviere would @-$#& have worldwide delivery, you know, as in for the places your channel can be watched from. Not the best day every time I've been sold on one of the guitars in your videos but remember I can't buy it cause I'm not in the US (despite being close, in Mexico). If they listen to you, please tell them, it's good busine$$ for everyone.
Hooray. I have never liked the huge, heavyweight headstock and this is terrific looking. (You used the nicer word - the 'ornate' headstock was always a put-off for me.)
I like archtops with single coils, tbh. I prefer the Dynasonics to the filtertrons in the bridge, I've got one in #1, which is basically a mid-50's Gretsch Country Club, the real thick bodied ones, and a Ray Butts filtertron in the neck.

This guy must have reviewed hundreds of guitars. It is amazing he can exude the amount of enthusiasm that he does.
I never get tired of opening a new guitar!
I still get excited walking through music stores. Even if I have 10 of one guitar, something might interest me.
He simply exudes.
Do what you love; love what you do!
Every day must be like Christmas for Darrell. "Hey, here are three guitars. I don't know what they are, so let's unbox them and see!"
I love it!
Beautiful instruments, Darrell looks like he got his Christmas gifts early.
D'Angelico is definitely a contender in the guitar world. Thanks Darrell.
The electrics anyway, not so much their acoustics
That periwinkle color is gorgeous!
Very classy looking vintage style semi-hollows, that periwinkle single cut one is beautiful with that creamy binding and trim.
This is a big improvement in the headstock design. I always hated their headstocks before.
I disagree 🤔 it had a personality before, and now - its like any other guitar brand under the sun
I like the vibes of these guitars. Especially that wine red mini!
I agree.
Their higher level semi hollows use a JB/Jazz combo, so it's not surprising that they're using a similar approach here. Nice line of guitars by a very reputable company. I like the no-frills approach they used.
I like this headstock much more than the more elaborate ones which are over the top.
gotta say, ALL these tones are phenomenal! very impressed :)
I have 7 D’Angelico guitars now. I see a satin blue mini dc in my future 😊

I've been waiting for diamonds. I'm feeling the SS. The Supro's are pretty.
Had to watch it again. The Supro's have their own little thing going on.
Listened to this on my cell phone, and this still sounds amazing!!! Why, oh why are you making me want to buy one of these?

I’m not surprised by these fine instruments, a great guitar maker making great guitars.
I knew it was D'angelico when i saw the knobs lol!

Wonderful and classy guitar. Dig the details: the diamond dots and the long "f" holes, like the Fender Coronado...

I love the clear, full sound! Excellent clean and dirty. Very nice!
I'm happy to see they changed the headstock. I never liked the old one.
Do you think the headstock will last long with Gibson?
Very nice indeed. I have a D'Angelico Premier Riverside acoustic that was a great bang for the buck!
well done Darrell. Send it on over lol. very nice stuff

You don't have them in this video but I think their Deluxe Bedford models are cool looking. The Bedford shape is like their offset guitars.
Glad to see simple controls for a change. I am not a fan of coil splits because they produce really crappy sounds from my experience
New headstocks are a big improvement
The fingerboards seem really glossy, which you didn't mention. Not an issue at all, just a little unusual and different.
I have a couple of D'Angelicos (Premier DC and Excel SS). Very interesting, the new series (and beautiful shirt, by the way).

Kind of bummed they used the same size F holes on the Mini as the full sized. They look out of place. Neck dive on the Mini?
Love the art deco designs.....great job to whomever came up w this!
How would you compare the quality vs a PRS SE, being that they are in the same price range?

The airy character almost sounds like a full hollow.
What I do like and would like to see more of is one volume and one tone control.
Great review. Does the mini sound any different due to smaller size compared to its big brother? Might be another good comparison!
They do! We find our Mini DC's have a snappier and brighter tone compared to its full-sized counterpart.
Charcoal Blue? Blueberry Frappe?
Great video. For a second there I thought you were going to rip into ozzy's CRAZY TRAIN. 🤘🙂🤘
