How to make compost layers in Containers:
    1. Branches, leaves, grass clippings
    1. Paper shreds, toilet/ paper towel rolls
    3. Kitchen scraps, coffee, egg shells
    4. 1/4" cheap Potting Soil
Can either plant in it right away or wait til it breaks down.

Why do the grass clippings not start grass growing in your garden? I can see using them in a hot compost pile, but not understanding in a cold compost pile

    • @Metqa
      @Metqa 2 года назад +3

@@susanblackwell3457 do you mean weed seeds from the lawn? Grass isn't going to seed in most yards. You are just cutting the stems and leaves of grass. If any seeds, more likely dandelions and other weeds.

I think I love you. I needed a boost. I just lost my bin of compost worms to an unusually hot day and kind felt defeated. I thought about giving up any kind of gardening but you reminded me of where I started and how simple it could be. I have lost my health, my free time, my greenhouse was smashed by a fallen tree during a storm, and almost all of my plants perished. I stopped going outside. I have many containers full of old compost from the city from back when I had the health to garden, but it has dried out or been flooded or invaded by bugs... but you reminded me that I can go back to basics with what I've got. I can take that darn tree and use it for container hügelkulture and take back what it stole from me. I can refresh that compost by using it as the soil layer of a composting mound. I feel like I can maybe redeem myself and start again.
I couldn't sleep and RUclips brought me to you via a hummingbird fountain vid. Boy, am I glad I looked deeper into your channel.

I remember the first time I saw the video you did in 2017. I didn’t see it for the first time until 2018. I have always composted since I started gardening. I loved your idea of composting in place. So much so that I started doing the same thing in 2019. The parts of my garden that are doing the best are the sections where I started composting in place, just dump everything right into the ground. I do cover with a layer of dirt to discourage critters from coming and digging in the middle of the night. I have dogs so I don’t have to worry about it during the day. But every time I go out to my garden, I think of you Robbie and your great idea! Much love, from Central Texas😊

I just ordered (4-19-22), 6 more totes from WalMart. Their price has increased more than $2 each in just 2 months! And are now $8.33 each-including tax. Free shipping. But, I have NO clue what they'll be in a year's time-IF you can still find them.
I have recommended your life saving videos to more people than I can remember, and everyone LOVES your common sense, down-to-earth, and positive attitude. And, almost ANYONE can garden the way you do. Little outdoor space? Then your vertical bucket gardening is for them! Can't bend over? Then have someone place your totes higher up on chairs, blocks, tables... No organic sticks or brown leaves to start layering your totes/buckets? Like you suggested-head to a neighbor, that uses nonchemicals on their yard, and barter work for them. Your suggestions are so normal. And your suggestion to just grow something-anything, should be easy to do.
Please keep up these valuable videos. You are literally saving people's lives-whether mentally and/or physically-we all NEED to have something to look forward to. And nothing beats watching new life sprout from seeds!! SEEDS that become edible food, or even the beauty of flowers. Edible 💐. Blessings.

At first it was slow to decompose, but now I can't even keep up with it. We fill it up to the top and in a week it sank 1 foot! We have not use our green bin for more than 2 years now. We have not use the compost from it yet but the tree near by have not been fertilized by me over 1 year now and they have the best growth over the summer. A lot of communities have where they take all of their scraps from their garden. If you can get to that place there should be plenty of broken down scraps that is now pure gold!. It usually has from old plants to grass clippings to tree limbs to you name it it's probably there and it's probably broken down into beautiful soil!

Thanx. I was always taught that you cannot use meat scraps and bones in your compost. I’ll have try that. I was also told you have have to remove the inner membrane from the egg shell. So now with this information I will begin the process.

I’m doing this now. Yes! However, I’m finding holes in bottom work better… but I will know by time next year… got three bins w holes on side… but most of mine are raised up on blocks and 2x4s and I haven’t got a problem with roots, but I have rabbits so I need stuff up. And it’s good for my bum leg… this system is fabulous! For so many reasons… if I move, my garden is pre packed… I’m also experimenting with ‘traditional’ wicking bed… I’m in desert… I’ve made a video about this and have included a shout out to you and a link to this video. This is probably the most valuable thing that everyone should know. 💕👩‍🌾🙏🐝👏🌈🤪🍀👍🦋

I watched it. i tried it. i came back and watched again. I learned more, i have some experience now, i know which part is what i haven't learned before. 😁
Sometimes, i kept kitchen scraps too long, even 4 days, they look like moldy, will that give me bad soil? Thanks.

I was trying to find worms but our ground was too hard. I was wondering about buying bait worms, are these safe? I figure they are from work farms but I don't know much about worm farms. I tell you this a lot but I am so excited to have found your channel.

    • @janetbrown3349

I also thought I should start off with bait worms but I didn't need to. Truly, the worms will come all by themselves if you are composting in place. It's like magic! I didn't believe it until I turned out one of my containers the other day, replacing bolted lettuce with a zucchini plant, and I was stunned by what I saw. Worms everywhere! Robbie and Gary rock!!!!
