    Tip: When you put the manifolds back on leave the nuts and bolt slightly loose where the two manifolds bolt together until after you tighten the manifolds to the head. This will allow both manifolds to float until they are even. then finish tightening the bolts.

    When shortening up studs or bolts now I thread on the die or a nut before I cut it off then just undo it and the threads are perfectly aligned with no risk of cross threading.

    Just a tip, for working with those straight 6 manifolds.
    Leave the bolts connecting the intake & exhaust a little loose. Torque both manifolds to the head first . Then torque the intake to the exhaust. This way, you reduce any irregularities between the two pieces. You will get a better seal, and less chance of cracking.
    Love the channel, keep up the good work.

    Hey Karl, cap the back side of the front speakers with Tupperware bowls, PVC pipe caps, 2L pop bottle bottoms...anything to enclose backside. Seal airtight with caulk, hot melt, etc. Will even-out freq response, increase power handling & kill phase cancellation. Worth the 30 mins of work. It'll rock.🤘😎🤘

    • @ChadReynoldsGarage
      @ChadReynoldsGarage 2 года назад +2

      YES!!! They need an enclosure since they aren't mounted to a panel that will separate the front from the back. Stainless mixing bowls work too but are heavier. Won't take much but will make a huge difference in how they sound, even with them aiming down like this.

    • @MakeItKustom
      @MakeItKustom  2 года назад +5

      Great idea to improve sound. Ok I’ll dig around lol 😂

    • @carlholm2765
      @carlholm2765 2 года назад +2

      @@MakeItKustom What ever you make the baffle from, make sure it doesn't resonate or rattle. If it is an enclosure, that can effect response in a negative way by pressurizing the diaphragm so it doesn't have free movement. A plate made of MDF hard board, plexiglass, or some similar dense material surrounding the speaker frame can improve things without pressurizing anything and is pretty simple to fabricate. A little fiberglass house insulation, rock wool, carpet padding, etc on the back side will help absorb frequencies from the rear and is a pretty cheap upgrade to the sound. Doesn't need to be fancy to be effective.
      Use your ears to judge the sound not your eyes. I have been a working musician for 40 years, studied acoustics and audio production in college and worked as a sound engineer in a concert hall for a number of years.You'd be amazed at how many people don't understand how things work and are shooting themselves in the foot with their notions on what works because of what they believe without understanding the physics behind things. Enclosures are VERY complicated things to get correct.

    I learned the hard way that gm used metal alignment rings to align the intake to the head. If you don't have them like I did for a while the intake will keep slipping down and leaking since the bolts don't go through holes they are pinched with the stamped metal things.

    I've always had a friend fly cut my 235 and 261 intake and exhaust and cut the surface between the two. They still end up having small black carbon tracks and a very slight "putt" at idle. I think they're more or less made to run with those issues. I've been very fortunate that none of my 848 heads have ever had any cracks. In a world where I've tried to get every last ounce out of my 435 '67 Corvette and LB7 Duramax, for driving pleasure, a stock 235 with solid lifters in a '58 Apache is perfection.

    A trick I’ve found that works really well is after you heat the nuts or bolts, instead of spraying a lubricant on it use a candle, just touch it to the hot metal and the wax melts and gets sucked into the threads, makes for an easy removable.

    I had a 73 Chevy inline 6. Cyl 292 cid. That had the same problem, so I sent both manifolds to the machine shop, had everything machined flat, then bolted both on the head, NOW I have almost .0.223 clearance between intake and exhaust heat box, so I took 3/16" x 1" flat strap, made a spacer plate, then with the gaskets everything came out right on and no stress on the cast manifolds,

    Always like it when you fire up the CNC laser cutter. I used to work in a big factory where they had a couple of these to cut out parts for construction equipment. Where’s the coolant for your machine?
    I just added a couple pieces of equipment to my little garage shop where I do body and paint on my own projects. Inherited them from my dad. Added a HD bench grinder and a small drill press, as well as a belt sander and sanding wheel. Those will help when I have to make some patch panels from scratch.
    I’m working on a 73 Dodge Tradesman. Repainting it this year and going try my hand at custom paint on it. Loved the vans you had and we’re working together on!

    That crack is quite common. Like mentioned below in a post, keep the bolts and nuts that hold the intake and exhaust slightly loose. Also torque the nuts middle bolts 20-25ft lbs and 25-30 ft lbs for the two outer bolts. I repaired my manifold with the same crack with spray welding. Needle peened it and finished with a application of Calyx.

When I first bought my 69 Cutlass (1992) I installed the radio under the dash below the factory radio (stopped working), but I made the radio bracket out of some wood and painted it black to hide it. You will be amazed at how easy and how clean the parts come out after a quick wash with water. You can do this with all metal parts but the cast really clean up almost like new. Bonus is it is Healthy and an environmental safe too.

    Thinking of one word that defines this car. Dignified!
    Someone mentioned lace in the comments. Yup, quick and easy,
    Heat nut and cool in water. 3 times. Success rate, almost 100% caliper brackets with stuck guide pins, only way.
    Nice speaker mounts, and bracket for head unit is clean! Typically the speakers are boxed to help with the thump. Take a speaker in a box and lift it out while its playing.
    P A welding blanket. Hate it yet?
    Fiberglass. I just filed mine in the trash. I had fiberglass stuck in my arms. Probably not a big deal but itchy as F.
    Will see if my second one is the same.

    I didn't read all 400+ comments, it's probably been mentioned, but if you can create an air separation between the front and back of those speakers they will sound 100% better and are less likely get blown out as well. With them hanging out in free space the cones aren't able to work as effectively. I love the videos!

    I have a 58 Delray with the 235 and Borg Warner overdrive. It’s a two door, but to me the four door version has always looked just as good. Thanks for posting.

    That's a beaut of a ride. The metal flake roof and base color are a nice combo.
    We refer to the torch as "The HOT wrench". If you can't remove with the torch, it was not meant to come apart.

    Yep that’s why the gas axe is my favorite tool. It’s the only way to remove all that natural threadlock and unstick the stuck 👍

    Whenever I'm disassembling old, rusty parts like your manifolds, I heat them up with a torch as you have, then while they're still hot I touch a big old candle to them. You 'd be amazed how the wax will melt and wick into gaps and threads, makes removing the fasteners that much easier. This works well for removing O2 sensors too, don't need the torch, just run the engine briefly to warm the exhaust system.

      that works for sure...lug nuts especially... and all I ever use is map gas or a propane torch

    Good work on the stereo install, did it for 20+ years and that's how we usually did the glove box deck mount, and the speakers but out of abs plastic sheets. You'll want to cover up the back of the speakers with baffling or what we call "hats". The way it is now you'll have a ton of phase cancellation, making the speaker not reproduce sound very well. Add the hat to the back and it'll sound way better

    I have an old Land Cruiser that has a 2F motor in it. Toyota modeled their motor off of the 235. With that said, I've had great success using Remflex gaskets to make up the difference between the air and exhaust manifold.

    I love the originality.
    Rare find these days.
    I could see it with nice little 283, some power pack or camel hump heads, a very mild cam, ram horn stock style manifolds.
    That would be a peppy little cruiser while keeping the vibe.
    No objections to how rad it is, as it is though..

    Love the 58, beautiful!
    30 year paint vet here and the only difference between us, I have more years in fixing my mistakes!🤣
    Just make sure you sand that layer off. Not always, but to many times I have seen the issue you have, bleeding through when new material is placed on top. Good luck and dig the channel.✊😁
    Looks like edges of primer spots to me. Like two different materials not working together and it lifted the sanded edge when paint was applied. Just a thought.

    There's a couple of tools that I use which are faster than a torch and the other is fast at finding leaks of all sorts. The first ins and inductive coil heater that I use for heating up 'difficult' fasteners. Typically undercarriage nuts 'n' bolts. Takes just a couple of minutes with virtually no set up time. Very fast, very cheap. The second is a smoke machine to find leaks, also fast and cheap. I recently used smoke machine to find intake leaks on my son's '06 Taurus. It literally took only five minutes to set up and do a test with pin point accuracy. I take it that you have no media blast cabinet either. A super useful tool and time saver. With one of those you can also do a thorough clean out of the internals of the manifolds. I personally like to deburr any cast on an engine as well, (inside and outside). It can make it easier to work on at a later date. If you've ever tried squeezing your hand trough a gap on the engine with casting flashing still there, you'll know what I mean...I think that if you don't take care of that rusted back exhaust flange on the head, you're going to get an exhaust leak. Better to take the head off and use a hot metal powder spray welder to build up the level of the exhaust flanges. Not sure why you wouldn't remove the factory radio delete to use the stock radio location, it's not like the delete plate something special in any way. You also get the use of the glovebox. Very nice installation though! How about speaker guards, lest someone put their foot onto a speaker?
