Thanks a lot for making this video! I've watched many of your videos over the years and it's amazing seeing myself in one. Also one thing I wanted to add is, the empty jump after wind enhanced medium condor spire is +2 so I can get a 50/50 there which is why I was doing it.
Everything you used is right out of your lily pressure guide (which I studied and practiced daily). True block strings are the key to controlling your opponent and pushing for a RPS situation after the pressure and being plus, if you can.
Yeah, no matter how balanced a game there will ALWAYS be people that choose a top tier for top tiers (which is fine of course) sake, so seeing that much variety at all is pretty insane.
Was really impressed by ElChakotay, crazy good run to watch. I'm not really sold on her being particularly OP or even high tier now tho. Really it just shows the gap between all characters has been closed even further and that is great for the game, at least in my opinion.
Just want to say that Noah's burnout strategy is not Lily specific, he does that against every character and every player. The thought behind it is that he uses more drive for his pressure than other player, and then he just navigates in burnout until he has meter again and if you try any kind of burnout pressure he reacts with super which he's quite good at. Debatable if that's a good strategy, mayn people have commented on that, but that's how he plays.
this is the same guy who competed at evo at 8 years old bringing multiple off meta big bodies and immediately dropped x factor after every single hit to confirm a character kill early on
It was cool that before the notes, chakotay was saying he was loving the game and was really going to be pushing for more success. Wonderful to see him rewarded, and quickly.
ElChakotay is exceptional. Lily is still on the lower end of the roster but a solid player beats tier lists most of the time. Just look at the incredible stuff that Snake Eyez does.
El Chakotay while everyone was saying Lily needs to be deleted and start from scratch actually had a video talking about what buffs equivalent to other characters would benefit Lily and “fix” her. He knew this character in and out before the patch so it’s amazing to see he won this with her.
Lily didn't utilized the buffs in this match but neither did Luke. If Noah was to put on the pressure on El Chakotay's Lily and drain his drive meter, he woulda have optimize the buffs Luke has and spend extra doing his DDT in the match. But aside from that these 2 know each other very well and have made a performance at Combo Breaker. And at the end of it all El Chakotay came up the winner and I can never be more happy for him, he deserves it for all the hard work he put into playing Lily. Highy doubt this will convinced more people to play her instead of kooming over Akuma but here's hoping he can get a next win at another tournament. And congratulations again El Chakotay.
He had a flowchart that Elchakotay figured out pretty quickly. Noah did crMK DR crMP/LP throw well over 10 times in their matches. It got to the point where Elchakotay was just backdashing after the jab to escape for free. Noah didn't adjust at all to this. It might've been tourney nerves. He was a little too reckless on the jumps and burnout situations. Luke also just does a lot less damage now too.
The nerfs to other characters was more important than her minor buffs. The damage scaling and buttons on Luke helped. The drive reversal helped as well.
One thing that I think is not mentioned as much is that by just having a tool, the simple threat of the reversal, characters like Lily and Gief get way more freedom to escape the corner in other ways and mix up their defensive options. That happened more than a few times in GFs only with ElChakotay wakeup jump + condor diving and block + backdashing Noah. Now on that particular match, the difference in adaptation between Tay and Noah was surreal. I've already mentioned wakeup block + backdash on A LOT of Noah's DR tick throw attempts, but Noah simply couldn't figure out a counter to Lily's 2HP or how to mix up his offense whatsoever
So happy for him. Awhile back when I was trying to get better with Lily I checked out some of his combo and setup videos with her and they were all solid. You could tell he is definitely a Lily specialist.
I was watching ElChakotay's guides on how to play Lily when the game first came out. It was great to see him win this. My two cents--ElChakotay's 2HP AA is next level and Noah refused to accept it. If you play Lily yourself you'll find that AA is harder to land consistently than her DP.
The way he played was incredible, he was always a good players but ive seen him lose time and time again in sf5 for pure nerves on torunament, but he hold his ground perfectly
The lily buff for her medium stock leading to cmd throw is huge actually. It's a buff to her drive rush routes that end with it. Now she can do something like this combo(back h.p, drive rush, st. Mk, cr. Hp, medium stock. Before she wasn't in cmd throw range unless they whiffed a jab, so all she could do is jab herself or punish a whiff. This sets her up with a nice mixup AND you can keep your stock to get back in after it hits
El Chakotay has been a promising player for a long time now!! Even in SF4 he was cookin, but he doesn't play the popular characters as much. Online he takes a lot of wins, but he doesn't get as much success in person. This is a big turning point for him - I expect to see him out at more events driving to victory! Question is if he'll change characters to do it.
Lily's direct buffs didnt come into play, but mechanical additions that buff her, and Luke's nerfs definitely did. Noah's forced burnout strategy is actually nerfed due to RDRev's existence and the buff to -6 on block for it making -2 on a burnt out opponent. Unless Noah made it whiff by neutral jump or outspacing, it was very much a safe option in the situations Chakotay used it. And if Noah neutral jumped and Chakotay didn't bite, Luke's nerfed jumps make it easier for Lily to anti-air (this was a factor the whole set, really). Also, Luke losing as much in terms of damage as he did impacted a lot, as well. Most importantly, Noah's strategy is not good vs Lily, since the best resource vs her is DRev. Chakotay's strong defense and spacing vs Noah's flowchart, on top of the patch changes were key. Noah had a bad strategy vs Chakotay, and never truly readjusted it, and Chakotay took advantage of the changes and never really put himself into position to play to Noah's strengths in reactions and strong reads.
I struggle a lot with Lily's crouch heavy punch anti air the timing is way harder than it looks. I've been training myself to DP instead, ElChakotay's timing is amazing. I wish her medium punch buttons weren't so risky to use, Drive impact almost removes them from her kit same with her stand heavy kick and those are her long range buttons. There's a good reason we spam crouch heavy punch it's all Capcom gave us 😩 On the windclad spire to jump setup Lily is +2 if you use medium windclad so she gets the same mixup as a blocked ex spire. If they try to jump back you can catch them with her medium punch air target combo.
I've always felt like tier lists are more of a suggestion. Dunno if this is a hot take, but I feel like it's more useful for beginners trying to figure out what character is easy to learn/get wins with until you get more experience and figure out your play style. It feels like the real pros pick whoever is most fitting to their play style, regardless of tier. ElChakotay proved that. It's been that way since people started doing tier lists. Generally true unless a character is genuinely broken like having actual infinites, which was more common before these games received balance patches.
I was unable to watch due to work but my buddy was watching it and when he told me that a Lily won I legit couldn't wait to get home to watch what happened. Especially against a Luke. This was an awesome win!
Been inspired by his Lucia in 5 and was pleasantly surprised to see we share a main again with Lily here in 6. Glad he showed up and took a W after being close to the top many times whenever he's entered. Always fun to watch.
If Capcom wants players to use another button, they need to buff something useful. St. LK is way too stubby to be any more than situational. Now if they buffed St. MP to allow for confirm into Wind, that'd be an immediate impact. I'd take a Wind damage nerf for that. I'd take a nerf on damage on both MP and Wind for that.
It really is as simple as "People lean on cHP because it's one of her... maybe 4 decent buttons." So many of her buttons are redundant or their niches so small that they're basically non-existent. Buttons like sHK, cMP, and cLP need to get some love to help expand their roles, as I can't think of a single situation to use those buttons, especially now with sLP being 5 frames. If we find *any purpose at all* for these redundant buttons then that'll go a long way to make her more nuanced. For the record, though, I don't think sMP should be special cancelable. That'd just make it take cHP's place as Lily's one-button neutral. It's a strong, non-committal poke that gives you time to anti-air if your opponent jumps it, it doesn't need to be any more than that. Maybe a little faster recovery so it doesn't get blown up by drive impact so hard.
Tay is a good dude, and I'm happy for him. He decided to stick with Lily before the game even came out. He won't switch unless Mika or Fuerte comes back, I'm sure.
Elchakotay is awesome! I know him from twitch. He's a cool dude. They are always practicing and trying to learn the game. I knew he could do it! Thanks for sharing their match and reviewing it. Lily is one of my favorite characters. I love what she represents. Mexico! Anyways keep up the good work jmcfofts.
3:26 definitely people aren’t paying enough attention to the drive reversal change and how that impacts character balance. Dhalsim for example got a couple of very minor direct buffs, but went from having to spend 3 super bars for a massively unsafe invincible reversal (if he even has the bars to spend) to just needing a couple of drive bars for a reversal that is 8 frames slower (a little less than twice as slow) but only slightly unsafe. Compare that to Luke for example, who went from having to spend a couple of drive bars or 1 super bar for a massively unsafe 6 frame reversal (whichever he prefers, not to mention his 5 frame level 2) to having to spend a couple of drive bars/1 super bar for a massively unsafe 6 frame reversal or a couple of drive bars for a reversal that is 3 times as slow but only slightly unsafe (and nearly 4 times as slow as his level 2). The characters that benefit from this the most after Dhalsim in order are Zangief, Marisa, Lily, Manon and Ed Gief’s level 1 effectively isn’t a reversal and his level 2 is a bit slow. Marisa’s level 1 is armored not invincible, this lets it work against projectiles but not throws, which is not a trade in her favor since meaty projectiles are less common/powerful and pretty much only are used to beat other level 1s and JP Amnesia. She also has EX armored reversals but again they lose to throw. Also she can’t use it if her health is too low. Lily has a real level 1 and it does good damage but is still a bit slow even at 10 frames. Manon also has a real 10 frame level 1 and slightly beats out Lily because it side switches when used as a reversal. Ed actually has an invincible DP but he still benefits a lot because both it and his level 1 are 13 frames, Like Luke except more than twice as slow. Drive reversal is only 5 frames slower than that. Honestly he might benefit more than Lily/Manon even.
I think people are underestimating how much damage was nerfed this season for the majority of characters. There was a lot of drive rush jab combos in season 1 that are now getting hit with the scaling penalty. Grapplers really lost no damage, and gained a reversal.
Elchakotay is just a godlike player. Lily is still a little underpowered compared to a lot of the cast, but I'd imagine a lot of players don't know the matchup very well. He's really the only Lily player in the US who plays at this level, so getting practice is probably pretty difficult. I was so happy to see him win this tournament :)
Let's go Lily! I've been a believer & thought she looked like a fun character since the game came out. Haven't even touched a modern Street Fighter game (but I do read the comics lol) so this is such a pleasant, affirming surprise. But the main point is El Chakotay is so sick with it. So so happy for his well-earned win!!
I like it when less used characters get shown. We're all boree of the same high tiers. We want a Dan to win a street fighter 6 tournament, when they release him of course
I'm hoping Capcom give us another MX rep in the roster. Lily is cool and all, but Fuerte has been gone for a while and deserves another time in the limelight. I also kinda was hoping for a more MX based boxer for 6 as well.
I love the way the SF6 devs know their game and have specific intentional nudges. Akuma aside being practically all the toys... But seeing rooflemonger's video on ryu's gameplan now is pretty fascinating. I'll never get to the level where these things matter but its super cool that we are getting more into more "low tier" characters entering the playing field. I do want to see a manon win something though haha. Especially a manon vs zangief final or marissa. Things are gonna be so explosive in these match ups.
Lily always was my favorite character since i started playing the game. Shes fun to play and its cool to see someone win a tournament with her even though people always say shes weak
elchakotay showed how good the buff to wake up drive reversal is for the health of the game. It allows characters that dont have those buttons to shine. jamie, kim, honda, gief, and manon i see also rising up a little bit with this on top of their other buffs.
Maybe the patch helped him win, because everyone was like "How should I use my character after the changes? How should I play them?" El Chakotay was like "I'm still going to cr. HP".
Lily buffs are nice and season 2 changes and nerfs to others overall really helps her as well especially wakeup drive reversal. Elchakotay also played very well. Lily definitely is very solid this season. Lily Nation!
You got to make a new Greatest moments video! Poongko’s rise from Shadowloo Showdown to EVO was huge back in the day. That and Kuso (?) the Viewtiful Joe player in UMVC3 from Japan was great
While everyone glazing luke, angry bird won evo(Ken), uma won Capcom cup(juri), Mena won SFL, Red Bull kumite and evo Japan(blanka) and now EL won combo breaker2024(Lily). STOP THE LUKE GLAZE💯
He didn't use Lily buffs, but he didn't need to. The system changes and Luke nerfs worked in his favor. The wakeup drive reversal was certainly a factor, but there was more. Noah would get a throw in the corner and have to waste drive to rush in for a loop mixup instead of being able to just walk right up. He'd be in range to jump out of the corner with a jumping HK or HP but Lily's cr. HP would beat it clean because Luke's jumping god buttons finally got nerfed. And the system changes to parry in general actually help Lily's spire mixups. If you can't perfect parry you're in big trouble from mixups and the extra throw range on parry recovery makes her command throw more threatening too
I think some of the universal changes are pretty nice for grapplers. Beyond the drive reversal wakeup, parry hurtbox being bigger for throws and general damage nerfs on the harder hitters of the cast. Chakotay is also just a great player, and I think Lily was better than people thought even pre-patch.
crouch HP is very good in Super Turbo too (T Hawk), I would say they just replicated that. I don't understand the complaint about this move considering she is not top tier at all
Did anyone else notice a lot more failed attempts at Parry Drive Rushing from almost full screen? I swear I saw a lot of people just empty parrying for no reason at full screen and I feel like that had to be an attempt at a Drive Rush, right?
Can't say I'm not worried to find out when and how opponents find ways to actually punish the new c.HP hurtbox! I'm only a Plat4 player, but at my level I've been able to use the mk and OD wind buffs to improve my drive rush use, looking for a 50/50 in neutral between DR -> cHP and DR -> c.MK. Would something like that end up being a good addition to a pro player's arsenal? No idea, but I'm still enjoying everytime I catch someone in drive rush -> c.MK -> OD wind -> Level 2 to win a round!
Interesting to note that, as a Lily main, I know that crouching light punch actually has more reach than standing light punch... although it doesn't appear so. I think Tay knows this too. A lot of Lily mains don't know. Great took to stop opponents DR.
ah the classic : Overaggressive Top tier flow chart player vs. High IQ Uncommon match up mid tier player. Matchup is usually 50-50 but during patches 40-60 mid tier.
I love that the New Characters are to some degree based on old character design choices. (Maybe this is just me noticing this.) Like, Lilly is T.Hawk, but has Vega (Claw) elements in her play style (the weapon not being in hurt box range most of the time). Manon is Abel but with Elena's Long reaching kicks. Marisa is Sagat's Bully Style but with Urien's Rush Down Play. Jamie is Basically every Kung Fu Character before him (Fei Long, Yun, and Yang) with a bit of El Fuerte on movement. JP in my opinion is M.Bison (Style) and Dhlasim. Ed is also M.Bison's Explosiveness but as Balrog(Boxer). And Finally AKI is FANGbut with Vega(Claw) style attacks and a but of Necro in randomness. Its cool how they reuse older Ideas to create new characters.
NONE OF THE BUFFS CAME INTO PLAY BECAUSE CHAKOTAY JUST LIKE ALOT OF LILY PLAYERS ARE ALREADY DOING THEIR OWN THING, AND HER BUFFS ARE JUST SMALL.. HE WON PRETTY MUCH WITHOUT EXPLOITING ANY OF THE NEW BUFFS..
Really appreciate the analysis here, since I don't have a ton of experience with Lily and wondered how much the buffs really impacted this tournament. I'm sure the wake-up drive reversal helped out a lot here, and maybe just....not being as knowledgeable about the match up? It's always cool to see an underdog character at high level like this, but obviously El Chakotay was playing incredibly well and that should be the biggest takeaway.
Thanks a lot for making this video! I've watched many of your videos over the years and it's amazing seeing myself in one. Also one thing I wanted to add is, the empty jump after wind enhanced medium condor spire is +2 so I can get a 50/50 there which is why I was doing it.
Exceptional play my man. Props!
felicitations keep it up ^^
Your Lily play inspired me to pick the game (and her) back up, awesome work my man!
Bravo dude!
Everything you used is right out of your lily pressure guide (which I studied and practiced daily). True block strings are the key to controlling your opponent and pushing for a RPS situation after the pressure and being plus, if you can.
We had 7 different characters in the Top 8 in that tournament.
I'm happy.
That's such a great state for the game to be in. What was the double up character? Luke?

Same here as well. And I love that it wasn't any buffs that got him there, but just the same fundamentals he's been training since launch.
I started watching him at the end of sfv so this is lit to see him get the W congrats 👏🏾

I think you're right! many many viable characters now
For sure, it's balanced pretty well for the moment. Let's hope it stays that way for a while and we can see a heap of different characters doing well.

If you have good neutral the debuff of burnout is negligible. I mean in neutral getting hit you are gonna eat a full combo burnout or not...
Well, he almost won a major tournament, so it's an effective strat in his hands
@@SlyScyther He also got into CPT Qualifiers with that strat.

Very cool format for a video, and I'd definitely watch the 3S one even though I don't really know 3S.
So hype he won he was the main person I looked at for lily tech when the game dropped
The characters that benefit from this the most after Dhalsim in order are Zangief, Marisa, Lily, Manon and Ed
Gief’s level 1 effectively isn’t a reversal and his level 2 is a bit slow.
I would say it's a combination of slight tweaks on her plus the sheer skill of ElChakotay.
Combo breaker was so god damn fun! Jmcrofts is the best hype man
If I recall, El Chakotay was a really good Fuerte player in Street Fighter 4.
Hawk?
I'm hoping Capcom give us another MX rep in the roster. Lily is cool and all, but Fuerte has been gone for a while and deserves another time in the limelight.
I also kinda was hoping for a more MX based boxer for 6 as well.
@@LumaTo Fuerte Viper Abel and Rufus are 4 exclusives
@@simonb.8868 No.
@@simonb.8868 every character is an exclusive until they put them in a second game
I've followed him since I was a Lucia main in SFV
Maybe the patch helped him win, because everyone was like "How should I use my character after the changes? How should I play them?" El Chakotay was like "I'm still going to cr. HP".
love your analysis as always JM! These vids of yours always get me the most hype 💪
Been watching Chakotay since he was a lil kid and he was a Run Stop Fierce GOD with El Fuerte :P. VERY WELL DESERVED WIN MY GUY!
real mfs watched this goat hit chakotays on mika in 5. one of the greatest grapplers out there.
Lily buffs are nice and season 2 changes and nerfs to others overall really helps her as well especially wakeup drive reversal. Elchakotay also played very well. Lily definitely is very solid this season. Lily Nation!
Noah clearly plays that skin and color to hide a bit the burnout colors.
Yes Ryu 3rd Strike vid please. Always fun to see character variety.
Hey man! Great content as ever! Would love to see a breakdown and commentary on the sf3 Ryu win!
I think elchacotay did use lily's buff to H spire, I don't think you could combo it into level 1 into the corner like you could EX before the patch
elchakotay was also reading noahs patterns so well
Lily's biggest buff is wakeup Drive Reversal 😊
You got to make a new Greatest moments video! Poongko’s rise from Shadowloo Showdown to EVO was huge back in the day. That and Kuso (?) the Viewtiful Joe player in UMVC3 from Japan was great
he said the same thing about none of her buff came into play
Every time a Luke loses an angel gets its wings
Lily has always been a great character been saying this since season 1.
While everyone glazing luke, angry bird won evo(Ken), uma won Capcom cup(juri), Mena won SFL, Red Bull kumite and evo Japan(blanka) and now EL won combo breaker2024(Lily). STOP THE LUKE GLAZE💯
Loved watching his R Mika
Definitely interested to see Bubbles' Combo Breaker win in 3rd Strike with Ryu. He was great at Texas Showdown and only barely lost there.
If you can't perfect parry you're in big trouble from mixups and the extra throw range on parry recovery makes her command throw more threatening too
And Noah does not know how to play SF outside of drive rush 50/50s, jumpins and crazy reactions.
El Chakotay! The patron saint of Lily Mains everywhere!
I don't understand the complaint about this move considering she is not top tier at all
loved this deep dive, dude. we need to run a ft3 rps set at evo ✊🏽
18:21 The beat synced so well with this moment. Did you do that on purpose?
Yo folk father, great breakdown of the run!
Top tier Street Fighter is just a thing of beauty
Did anyone else notice a lot more failed attempts at Parry Drive Rushing from almost full screen? I swear I saw a lot of people just empty parrying for no reason at full screen and I feel like that had to be an attempt at a Drive Rush, right?
Or bait, empty parry so they either rush in for a throw or wait for a drive rush that doesn't come
@@umphreak9999 Maybe! It just seemed to happen a lot. It could be that I was just looking for it more after the first few.
Chako is an amazing player. Been playing for decades. Literally
ah the classic : Overaggressive Top tier flow chart player vs. High IQ Uncommon match up mid tier player.
Matchup is usually 50-50 but during patches 40-60 mid tier.
Ummmm which is which?
Lily for the WIN!!!! Oh man, now I'm ready to get back into it!! Let's Go!!
I feel the system adjustments helped lily more than her own individual buffs.
Been subbed to this guy since sf5 hid R.Mika is deadly
NONE OF THE BUFFS CAME INTO PLAY BECAUSE CHAKOTAY JUST LIKE ALOT OF LILY PLAYERS ARE ALREADY DOING THEIR OWN THING, AND HER BUFFS ARE JUST SMALL.. HE WON PRETTY MUCH WITHOUT EXPLOITING ANY OF THE NEW BUFFS..
Great commentary.
Yes please to 3S Ryu video. Was it Denjin set ups?
Lily needs a reliable target combo that can drive rush cancel. Also when she have winds stocks, she should be able to go through projectile
