You know, I've always thought that it is totally unrealistic that a planet with over 5000 levels, each of them completely or mostly covered with multi-level buildings, only had a trillion inhabitants...

TheAllPowerfulChicken Yeah I mean we know that large parts of the industry sector were pretty much empty, but then 5000 levels (=5000 planet surfaces) would be a total waste of resources...

Remember that there weren't 5000 levels all over the planet, the Jedi temple for example was situated at the top of a large mountain, meaning there weren't many levels beneath it. Also a lot of the surface is not inhabited either, large swaths of land is covered by industry and other infrastructure, as well as the levels below. The actually inhabited regions are the big circles you see from space, they are still massive and on many places around the planet, but even inside them there are open spaces. Also think about all the infrastructure this mega city requires. Ginormous support pillars to hold up the levels, maybe some repulse lifts, the gigantic power plants under ground and connecting infrastructure, water supply management and distribution systems, sewage drainage and treatment, WEATHER CONTROL SYSTEMS!!! (think about how massive they all have to be!!!) etc... Actual living space is actually a small fraction of the volume and of that space only a fraction is actually inhabited, and of that space only a fraction is densely populated or traversed. Just look at how massive a lot of the areas are around the place and how tiny the people look in comparison and how empty it makes it look many places. The only crowded areas are around points of interest where people are funneled into, everywhere else is mostly empty open spaces or unattractive shit holes. So when you think about it, 1 trillion is not such a bad figure, besides the Star Wars galaxy had "only" been free of destructive war for a thousand years. It may sound like a long time, but for a city this scale it would take a long time to fill if the population don't have high growth rate. Here on Earth in the developed world the birth rates are actually lower than replacement rate, meaning that if we keep it up like this we will start to have shrinking populations within the end of the century and eventually go extinct if nothing is done to increase replacement rate or decrease death rate (by increasing longevity).

The lowest it gets is The Works though, and I think it reasonable to say that's only "low" by the standards of Jedi who live around the Senate Tower and Jedi Temple which are rather well-off areas. Hell, most of the crime in that specific time period is due to the sheer destruction of infrastructure that the Empire dished out during the war, by the time of the prequels for example, even the worst areas (Like the Justicar and Black Sun territories) have probably been long transformed into commercial/residential areas.
This does raise the question, however, if crime began to spill over so close to the Senate Tower just how bad did it get in the real lower levels at the same time? Makes me think of "These 'civilized people'? They'll eat each other."

An additional thought: I first thought, "If the city is that high, the air would be to thin to breath." Then I remembered that they are a Kartashev Level 2 civilization, and they fixed that problem.

Interesting, although I was hoping for some elaboration on how the inhabitants of Coruscant were able to move the planet's entire oceans to some caverns and chasms beneath the city or how a Taozin was encountered here in the book Shadow Hunter. But then again, there is just too much to cover on Coruscant.

5,000 levels, that's a little crazy. That would make the tallest tower around 10 miles high. On Earth, there wouldn't even be enough air to breath. I think one less zero would still be impressive.
On the other hand, no one maintains the fundations of the buildings? If everything is rotting down below how it the whole thing not collapse? Just too much fiction for my stomach.

You like getting lost? That's my idea of a waking nightmare. Sorry. I like Star Wars though. Great vid. Another thing I wonder about Coruscant, how did the buildings at ground level support the weight of all those levels? The lower one goes the greater the weight above, so what kind of structures were down there to support all that weight? I may be over thinking this.

Thank you for the video. I've recently begun watching the Star Wars "Clone Wars" animated series and "Rebels" animated series and am completely in awe about the hugeness of the technology, its complete integration into society, its advanced nature, and yet with all of it, people still walk on 2 or more legs, eat off plates and dishes with silverware, and otherwise exist as we do in the 21st Century. My only 2-part question regarding Corusant and all the humungous buildings and machines and planet destroyers and spaceships is HOW MUCH DOES THIS STUFF COST TO BUILD, and HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO BUILD IT? I can only wonder how such a structure known as "Corusant" could be built in outer space, how long it took to build, presumably on top of an existing planet or planetoid and how much money it must have taken to create it. Frankly, I hate large cities and would never want to live there or visit it.
