As a person whose birthstone is garnet, I appreciate this video more than you can imagine! I have never been particularly fond of the deep brownish red garnets that I have seen. Now I know that there are so many more varieties, I will have to rethink my feelings about it. I also appreciate the figures you included explaining how the chemical structure changes to create different mineral varieties and different colors. I have only recently discovered your channel but I will be looking back to watch other videos you have shared! Thanks!
LOVE grants! Lots of colors and even color changing. Plus it wears well in jewelry. And sphalerite or spessertite where it can look like embers burning is magnificent. So many colors to choose from and all are beautiful. Garnets are the unsung heroes of the gem world. And most are affordable too, so check them out. I have several in just about every color and color changing under different light.
Garnets are underrated. They are strong enough to make beautiful jewelry pieces,in a lots of colors, cheaper, easy to find. For me at least, Garnets should be more valuated. And the light red varieties are a good Rubies alternative.
This is the content I have been waiting for. I’m about to devour this channel during my long, daily commute. Thank you for providing interesting, succinct presentation around the intersection of geology and chemistry.
I'm a man, and addicted to the deep red color of garnet (pyrope or almandine). I have like thirty of these red garnets in my collection (^_^). The color of the carbuncle (red garnet) is referred to as fire, passion, strong will, and protect you from bad things to arrive...
i like the deep red color of garnet because it reminds me of my auntie's set of her necklace, ring and earring garnet jewelry,it was an oval-shaped big stone that sorrounded with white pearls, and it was the ever first jewelry that i have wore during my childhood, that my auntie would love to wore it with me💖and i felt so lucky because i was the only among her nieces that had wore her garnet jewelry before she decided to sold it.and so i already loved the garnet gems/stones
Honestly I like garnets more than rubies, I appreciate their more subtle "red wine" color as opposed to the brighter crimson color of the ruby. Here in Europe garnets from Bohemia are very famous. My mom got herself a lovely pair of earrings with studded Bohemian garnets when we were in Prague.
Thank you for this video! I just got a demantoid bracelet and felt so uneducated because I didn't even know green garnet existed. you explained everything so well, now I now that it's completely fine :)
I definitely appreciate the humility of "Average" despite the GIA lanyard. The intensity of training and classes from the GIA is definitely nothing to sneeze at. As for Garnets, there's department store Garnets and there are those with exceptional cut, polish, color, tone, hue and saturation that are alive. Some will shift in color and some change color. Shift and change are not the same thing.....I'll step off stage now. LOL.
Andrew, would you mind explaining the difference between glass and gemstones? What an interesting channel this is! I love all the gemstones, all the colors. Frankly, I love everything from diamonds down to beach glass. Even broken glass by the roadside is beautiful.
Garnet is my birthstone iv been collecting and mining Garnets for years loves to know more how to cut and polish these beautiful stones ,and thank you for your post Manessa
I have a copper and red garnet ring. The stone was sold to me as a "pyrope garnet". I don't know much about that (other than what I learned from your video) but the gem is beautiful. Thing is, the stone is true red without any of the orange tones that I associate with garnet. No brown either. On the negative side it is very dark. Depending on the light and position there are facets that go completely black. However, even when it goes black there are these red flashes that stand out. The tsavorites look "warmer" than emerald. IMHO, it is more attractive than peridot.
I though garnet was a dark dull red. But I realize that garnet comes in different colors. I love my birthstone. I would like to have every color, especially the one that change colors.
Although I've read up on garnets before, it's interesting that I totally missed the part...I totally missed everything you just taught me! I don't recall anything that I'd read mention anything that you just mentioned...but that being said...garnets are pretty interesting stones and deserve a little more look see on my part. Thank you...I totally learned something new today.
I am in love with Garnets. I prefer them for the most part to their similarly colored precious stones. I have a gorgeous eye clean 30 carat hessonite that I am trying to decide what to do with. I just bought a 2 carat color change one I am excited to have set and a 1 carat tsavorite. 💖 I am so excited to design and pick out a setting for them and then start wearing them.
great video, garnet is one of my favorite stones. can you tell me anything about a star garnet, found a couple rough tumbled stone and would like to cut them to cabachons.
Wow. Awesome insight into garnets. I knew I had a meralani mint garnet, but had no idea my rhodolite and tsavorite rings are garnets, I just know I love them. Definitely subbed and going to binge watch
I know a bit more about garnet than the avg person as it's my birth stone and I have always found em beautiful and very unique. Interesting fact: garnets have been mistaken as rubies and vice versa for centuries. I am currently adding a beautiful orange garnet?spessartite) to my collection as I type this. Great video. Thanks and u have a new sub.
I work at a mine in Franklin North Carolina and I’ve seen rhodolite garnet, almadin and green garnet. It’s called Cowee Gift Shop and Mason Mountain Mine. Would love to talk to you sometime. You’ve got some knowledge.
got 3 5x3 tsavorites, but they are the "good" color. got them about 15 years ago, when you could still get dark ones. Got two of the blue/red color change, but again both just over a carat and marquise cut, but I was able to get them.* dont really like marquise cut) I count myself lucky. still looking for that True raspberry rhodolite with the purple-ish overcast. NOT purple red, but a highlight, across the top of the stone usually. Just like a raspberry picked off the bush!
I love garnets! Learning about the colour change ones was extremely interesting and now I wonder if there are blue garnets because there are green and purple
I love garnets, I have from Mozambique and India, looking so good,I have rodolite too but I didn't knew that belong to garnet, thank you for informations
@YourAverageJewler I have some Garnet! Would you be able to tell, what I have? If I send a few pictures? And maybe also the quality of the garnet? Also I love the information in your video! It is very helpful so thank you for your work
Hello, thanks for the great video. My birthstone isn't garnet and I couldn't care less. I love garnets among a lot of other gemstones that aren't my birthstone. I find the green colored tsavorite very appealing also. I don't have one. I do however have a large, dark red (almadine) stone cut cabochon with a beautiful 4 ray star in it. The star looks different than star sapphire, sort of needle-like, made up of some gold dust looking mineral. Maybe rutile, I'm not sure. But its gorgeous . 🙂
I'm a garnet baby. I love them. The rhodolite, the tsavorite ( definitely a favorite) , hessonite they're so beautiful! I own many different types . I wear tsavorite as my birthstone. I love, love, love them all.
I have a red garnet that's about the size two golf balls. It was made into a grooved hammerstone by an ancient native American. Since it is my birthstone, I had to have it for my artifact collection. I wonder what they used to peck the groove into it.
Love Russian demantoids, a friend had one from her White Russian grandmother. It was like a living thing, looking into the heart of an old forest. Love it.
I found a rock in my yard (New Haven County, CT), my property is a rock Amusement park with lots of stone walls, a stone foundation, stone chimneys (2) and walls all around this 1935 country style house. Anyways, I found a rock about half the size of a basketball, flat on the bottom, and it is very bumpy. My geology Facebook group said the bumps are garnets. They are about 1/2 inch round and there are probably 30-40 of them on this one stone. What do I do with it? Should I bring it somewhere to have them removed? There are other stones with bumps too, much like the one I am talking about, I just don’t know what I should do with them.
please man make more parts about garnets we saw expensive and cheap one please please make more about garnets like the yellow where it's come from why it's looks like that ? which one is expensive the light or dark ? and why it's light ? why it's dark ? the same thing with other colors believe me we need know more about it
Can you PLEASE FOR GODDDD do a video on blue and colorless garnets. I been searching the longest for one and I believe you can be the one. Please help me identify my blue garnet I have eye loupe and diamond tester but what else could I use to identify it
Blue Garnet would be quite unusual and rare. Not unheard of, but I would be curious why you believe it is a Blue Garnet that you have. There are many other blue gems that would be much more likely. As far as identification, the equipment and experience needed for what you are looking for is best left to a gemologist. There is a lot of overlap between different gemstones. Your best option would be to find a reputable jeweler that is a graduate gemologist to do an official appraisal. They may be willing to just do an ID on the stone, but it is a process that should have several tests and steps to give you a solid answer on stone type. A lesser option is to send it into a reputable lab to get a lab report. Both of these have a cost, so you usually want to have relative certainty of what you have before going forward with these steps. Some jewelers may be willing/able to give a quick opinion, but they need to usually go through an identification process to "know" what the stone is. A lot of people that give these quick opinions are not actually qualified to do so. The most experienced Gemologists at Gem ID understand that it is only a guess 90% of the time and needs more scientific testing to confirm. I still may do a video on this topic, but that hasn't started yet. It's a great idea though. Thank you for your question and for watching!
My sister has a small Bekily garnet that does not change color-- it stays blue! Have you ever heard of this? Did she get duped or is this a good stone?
My boyfriend and I went to buy a ring for me as a gift to me from him. We bought pinkish reddish garnet silver ring. We even didnt know that is a garnet gem stone. I am so glad that we ended up buying that unknowingly. Amd

Garnet is my birthstone. I LOVE it. I have a 1.6ct marquise cut garnet (Almandine) in a white gold pendant. I've worn it everyday on a Tiffany & Co ball chain for decades. It is still as beautiful today as when I got it. And for the record, Im a straight, traditional man, who loves God, America and my wife. I believe men can enjoy the finer things too.
Great video, I learned a lot. I'm not a gemologist but have bought a lot of stones, maybe thousands. First time I'd heard the difference between the aluminum and calcium types, that was interesting. I think "Mozambique" garnets were some of the very first I purchased; I was blown away that they could look so much like a ruby at a fraction of the cost. Tsavorite and Demantoid are my favorites. I'll find your video on sapphires and watch that next. Thanks!!!
I have a melanite from Russia, a uvarovite from the Urals too and just ordered a demantoid from Namibia but the ones from Russia are worth more. Are they really better quality or just more scarce coming from that area?
A bit of both, but the quality is more a generalization. You can often get nicer Demantoid from Russia. The big things is the have the provenance and history that more people want. It's kind of like how Burmese Rubys are usually more valuable. They can be much nicer, but it isn't a given. Unless you want to background, I say just judge each stone on its quality. Sounds like you have a pretty nice garnet collection.
Thanks for the response :) I'm in love with garnets and for some reason, end up liking stones from Russia. But I feel great wearing them so I'm going to read up about that area.
Garnets are my fave, thanj you! Tip: don't talk about what you are going to talk about🥱just get into what it you want to say. Sorry just got bored there.❤
I have a garnet that is dark green in colour with lighter shiny green metallic crystal sparkling through it and it's around an inch in size wish I could share a picture
You asked I deliver. The majority of the following information has been gathered from the winter edition of gems & gemology 1999. Blue garnets, as found in Bekily, Madagascar are generally considered pyrope-spessartine garnets as they are comprised of roughly 90% pyrope(40-50%)/spessartine(35-45%), with almandine(6-7%) and minor amounts of goldmanite, grossular and uvarovite also present, they have a refractive index 1.759-1.767 which is about as reflective as a typical almandine. These stones exhibit a wonderful blue-green to greenish-blue daylight colour that changes to purple under incandescent lighting, traces of chromium and vanadium are the most likely cause of the colours seen. These garnets are generally quite small and cut stones above 2cts are incredibly rare, most cut stones in the market are around ½ct or less. The most common inclusions seen to occur in these blue garnets tends to be rutile needles, fractures are also often present, clean stones are rare.
Also, the garnet is a result of when ruby and sapphire fuse, and it's made O-O-O-O-OF LO-O-O-O-VE! Hahahaha, I couldn't help but make a Steven Universe references.
As a person whose birthstone is garnet, I appreciate this video more than you can imagine! I have never been particularly fond of the deep brownish red garnets that I have seen. Some Pyrope Garnet s similar to Alexandrite gem.
Also rhodolite can be dark red
@@maoriblack7739 I like the purplish red color of rhodolite garnets they look like purplish red rubies.
So happy I found you.
Me too
My favourite garnet is also Tsavorite as well! I discovered them when I lived in Vancouver Canada in the early 80's!
same!
Cool! I discovered them watching a cartoon yrs ago

I believe a lot of the Garnets in that color are likely in the Almindine category.

What is the composition of the extremely rare, natural blue garnet?
My sister has a small Bekily garnet that does not change color-- it stays blue! Have you ever heard of this? Did she get duped or is this a good stone?
Hi. Do red garnet and peridot a good combination? Just wanted to know. Thank you.
yes
My boyfriend and I went to buy a ring for me as a gift to me from him. We bought pinkish reddish garnet silver ring. We even didnt know that is a garnet gem stone. I am so glad that we ended up buying that unknowingly. Amd
Does the presence of Garnets also Indcates diamonds around?
These videos are really good, thanks for the great content
My birthday is January 27 will not say the year. I have never liked my birth stone. I never knew it was any other color but red. My sister is July and her birth stone is close to January in color so now I want to get a green garnet.
I live in a state built with granite- some of the granite here contains lots of garnet and mica as a mix
So what would a 11ct tsavorite costs?
Am traying to look for orange or green garnert but no one sale it . Where is a good one ?
Usually your independent jewelers are the ones to have garner variety. You won’t see it as much with chains. That’s at least somewhere to start. It is more expensive so it’s carried more selectively.
Where can i buy green garnet?
Thank you for your explanation!
If garnet is your birth stone, can a birth stone be more specific within the garnet family? Like almandine? For any individual person so to say...
How can we see the difference between the red variations?
What is a YAG? Yttrium Aluminum Garnet. Is a Garnet, natural or synthetic?
Where can I get the print media with the visuals used in this video?
Can i wear garnet at my thumb
I have a large rock full of garnets would you know of a place that would buy it and thank you for your time
I have rough rubies from Africa. Where can I sell them?
Burma mogoke resolite garnet 1ct how much brother?

Garnet is my birthstone. I LOVE it. I have a 1.6ct marquise cut garnet (Almandine) in a white gold pendant. I've worn it everyday on a Tiffany & Co ball chain for decades. No need to explain your sexual preference
@Jason Muir: A normal preference, not abnormal.
Hi, Im planning to buy a garnet stone. Do you have a video on how to check if its an authentic garnet or fake garnet? Hope you can help me.Thanks
Do you get a blue garnet and if where do you get it
i add and like it video. i have one of rough green garnet too and 350Carat, i like it
Great video, I learned a lot. Thank you! I'm glad you found value!
Quite interesting, I didn't even know there were garnets in other colours.
Which variety of garnet are the most abundant or commonly found on earth? Thanks
Excellent stuff.
I recently bought an electrifying, candy apple red Mozambique garnet ring. It blows my mind! And wasn't a million dollars. 😅
May I ask ? How the crystal red stone?
Did I miss where you said which garnet is the closet to the pigeon red ruby?
@sabrinarusch8397 So what is the name of that specific garnet?
Sir is it expensive rubin stone?
Thanks...doing a study on the tribe of Reuben, so thanks for splitting the garnet (Reuben Sardis link) from a red sapphire.
Garnets are my fave, thanj you! Tip: don't talk about what you are going to talk about🥱just get into what it you want to say. Sorry just got bored there.❤

Im not a garnet baby but i love garnet gems, i love them.
I have a red garnet and it’s over 1,5 inches is it valuable? Also I love yore content🙂
Where's a good place to buy semi precious stones at a reasonable price?
