Can I just say, that as a gem enthusiast this channel has enriched my knowledge of gemstones and minerals so much, it makes me very thankful to live in this day and age. You people bring an incredible quality of knowledge to youtube, it's almost mind blowing to think I don't have to pay for it. Thank you people so much.
Blue garnet is fun, it was only discovered in the 90s and is one of the rarest types. What's funny is there's an old Sherlock Holmes story called the mystery of the blue carbuncle which carbuncle is an archaic name for red cabochons like garnets
As a January baby, my grandma gave me her mother's garnet and diamond ring for my 18th birthday. It's still my favorite piece of jewelry. Very dark red color
Wow, a stunning array of Garnets there, all of them with their own geological story. Personally I found the Garnet family the most difficult species of gemstone to ever to study. 🤯
Demantoid garnet is easily my favorite garnet-not only for the dispersion, but it just so happens my fave color is inch worm green, & demantoids seem to have a more yellow hued green, vs the also gorgeous tsavorite
Deep fan of almandine garnet here. I did my PhD in a gold mine that has a garnet-biotite schist that looks a lot like the graphite-dravite-garnet you showed.
My engagement ring is an oval shaped rhodolite garnet from North Carolina. In sunlight it looks more red to me and in electric lights it looks more purple. It's fun to see how it changes and always looks interesting and beautiful
Stunning, I like them all. Such incredible array of Garnet, never know this before, enjoy the video so much and thank you. I’m also a January baby so my fav stone is Garnet.😊
Aside from tourmaline, garnet is my largest collection! I absolutely love it, especially tsavorite and Rhodolite! Both have amazing colors, plus garnet crystals are just so cool! I have a small spessartine cluster in my collection that exhibits the crystal structure very well! Definitely a big favorite, awesome video! 💎 I got super lucky to purchase a very very tiny Demantoid, i absolutely love Demantoids fire! If I HAD to choose a favorite, I’d go with Rhodolite with intense purple shades
Just bought a pair of vintage earring studs in 18k on ebay with 8mm round purple rhodolite, can't wait to see them!!! Love garnets. Have a pair of 10mm round earrings in mandarin garnet, that is what I was told anyway, when I bought them about 20 years ago...beautiful orange orange, not yellowish, brownish, or too red. Nice video, subscribing!
I live in Ga. An I know nothing about gem stones, but my grandson an I picked up many of old looking rocks that had red stones just basically fall off by picking it with your finger nail. Dark red and more like crystals from their shapes. Over the years we had a plastic lunch bag with around two hundred of the stones. I just figured they were garnets since garnets aren't rare. You'll be amazed at what you can find when walking .
Oh my gosh! So my birthstone is a garnet. And I have always been put off by the deep “poop red” as I liked to call it when I was younger. I can’t believe I didn’t know about all of the different colors there are!! I am so excited with this new information thank you guys!!!
Great video. I wish it was longer and included the rare Masasi blues, Mali, Malaia, colorless, and color shift garnets. I have a bunch of q's. Are all garnets magnetic? If it's only the spessartine, ignoring clarity as an identifying feature, is it possible to isolate spessartines from pale orange hessonites using a magnet? Is it possible to sight-id a tsavorite vs. green demantoid if there's no horsetail clue? Could a magnet assist? For future videos, I'd like to see one about magnetic gemstones. Thanks and congrats if you made it through the entirety of my comment. LOL.
January baby here..my fav garnets are the Spessartite/Pyrope blue colour changers (Tanzanian material) ...and the colourless grossulars that tend to sparkle like diamonds..and star garnets....none of which were shown in this video, but great video nevertheless!
When I heard you guys say that Spessartine garnets are magnetic I had to go find the big garnet crystal I mined at the old Ruggles mine in NH...and it was magnetic! I learned sumpin! Kewl!
Thank you for the video. I am new to gems, but I am discovering that garnets are quickly becoming a favorite. I got a beautiful colored 30 carat Hessonite that I think is one of the prettiest garnets I have ever seen. I also just recently got my first two samples of tsavorite garnet and I am in love with the rich green. I would like to get a demantoid garnet for my collection someday.
I've always loved garnets, one of my prize possessions is a star garnet (6 carats) in a gold ring setting, it is a deep red, I think it is a Pyrope. I have other garnets too. You guys are great but you never mention any of the "mystical" lapidary secrets...garnet is the "old maid's stone" because of it's use in Victorian mourning jewelry, it was said to put iron in the spine of a spinster! Garnet is one of the 3 "bloodstones", the Romans would set them in the hilts of swords to staunch the blood of wounds, Garnet was said to give courage and inspire valor. The AngloSaxon sword of Redewulf found at Sutton Hoo has a hilt set with garnets. This is part of the ancient lore of stones, wear a garnet and take courage! By the way the other 2 bloodstones are Hematite (it "bleeds" when you grind it) and the green jasper known as "Bloodstone" with the inclusions of red jasper redolent of the "Blood of Christ". You guys should mention the ancient lore of stones occasionally, you know folks are curious about the alleged magical powers of gemstones...there is a wealth of information to talk about there.
You actually made me love my birthstone. I'm not usually into these things but I had to check our your channel coz one of my best friends loves gems so much. All these facts are so fascinating even to a non-enthusiast. Gonna sub for more interesting info.
Start an argument with on sentence Hydrogrossular shouldn't really even be considered a garnet. Now that I got that out of my system.🙂 I'm stuck torn between spessartine and pyrope when it comes to picking a favourite garnet, usually I prefer to collect spessartines, yet, I can't ignore how brilliantly clean and simultaneously pale some pyrope can be. Decisions like these that are made even more difficult when isomorphism is considered... If I just pick the pyralspite group I'm pretty sure my favourite is somewhere in there🙄
I love this channel. I have been prospecting and treasur hunting, but recently started getting into rocks and gems. I have been finding a lot of levitright (leave it right there). Thanks for the great content.
Love the rhodolite and anthill, but have recently added to earring collection color changing garnet! Looked it up, and indeed appears to be variety of garnet.
I can agree with dudes pic 4 closer look!!!! Just beautiful and very rare!!!! And I'm a huge fan of all things iridescent so I didn't even know Garnet could make iridescence so that's just incredible to me!!!!! I see that Garnet surrounded by perfectly cut white topaz on thin platinum band . Maybe with 2 tiny Marquee cut teal sapphires on the very sides of the band!!!!!!!! And I pick surrounded by white topaz because I don't want anything too shiny take away from the iridescence of that amazing two in one garnet!!!!! And the band because it needs to be thin but strong enough to protect softer Stones has to be made in Platinum but I don't want it held with claws more like the rounded almost beaded prongs!!!!!!
I'm a January baby and I love that garnet is my birthstone! It's such a fascinating mineral with such variety in both colour and chemistry!! I loved learning about their solid solution series in my geo science studies!! But I actually learned something new today, garnets are magnetic?! That's so cool!
It is strange that Spessartine doesnt have iron or any magnetic element in it but is absorbed to magnet. I have lots of very rare Iranian Andradite, Topazolite and Demantoid including a magnificent 0.7kg+ killer Androdite specimen from a mine that isn't being mined (someone went in and took a few things). Let me know if you are interested, I can send photos.
So happy I found this channel today, do you guys have any videos on sunstones? I’m superrrr interested in learning more about Oregonian sunstones since they have copper imbedded into them unlike other sunstones in the world! Thanks!!
Yayzies! Garnets! Demantoid is by far and away my absolute favorite gemstone. I bought a pair of Green Dragon Mine Octavia?? Cut??? Maybe the cut is called something close. I forget. But they were from Jtv. I also bought a pair of 40pt each GDM round brilliant cuts and white gold posts to set them in. 7 years later.... which was 2017, a couple years back I had taken them out and set them on my ottoman before I fell asleep on my sofa with my adorbs schnauzer. When I woke up one was gone, and she looked guilty AF. Never did find it. Happy New year to ya'll. BTW...... My whole body hangs from your cheekbones gurl. Like for real. Gorge☺🥳
Great channel for students. Got hooked on your channel after taking mineralogy and getting the bug for it. Definitely feel like I'm getting an edge for petrology later :)
I have some stones that looks like a garnets .the color ranges from purplish red ,mandarin red and orange red. The color depends on where it is viewed and the light used.
Oh wow fantastic video fantastic presentation will all these gems specially of one family fantastic knowledge which is awesome now your picks at the end the bigger one is so cool to me. But I have to say both when looked at close look like piece’s of space frozen in time. Awesome thank u
Thank you! One of the easiest ways to separate garnet and zircon actually only requires a 10x loupe. Zircon is very strongly doubly refractive, so upon examination at the proper angles, the facet edges can appear to double (the stone can often generally look blurry under magnification). Garnet is singly refractive so there is no doubling. Let us know if you need any other tips!
One day in fields we have a giant lake it’s very spiky and once I found a spinel it was nearly 2cm wide but it was really pretty I keep it in a fancy box under my bed

Wow! That 2nd BOX has Humongous possibilities!
That color of Spessartine is so breathtaking.
As a true lover of all-things even slightly iridescent!!!!! Im going to half to agree with bros choice for the closer look!!! A truly rare beauty!!!!!
Rob i love you. thank you for being a left-handed sympathizer 💖
With out Hesitation, Uvarovite and Tsavorite, That Deep green color is just too Amazing to Under look!
Wow, a stunning array of Garnets there, all of them with their own geological story. Personally I found the Garnet family the most difficult species of gemstone to ever to study. 🤯
I think that garnet is one of the most underrated gemstones!!!❤ and im happy to say that i have loved this episode enough to watch it afew times!!!!
Full stop, rainbow andradite garnets are my favorite and more folks need to check them out, despite their rarity!
14:05 The correct call is: Variety: Iridescent, Species: Andradite, Group: Garnet. They are mostly found in Japan.
Spessartine and tsavorite are my favorites. Green is my favorite color and Garnet is my birthstone so I've always wanted a tsavorite.
Demantoid garnet is easily my favorite garnet-not only for the dispersion, but it just so happens my fave color is inch worm green, & demantoids seem to have a more yellow hued green, vs the also gorgeous tsavorite

Aaaahhhh!!! My birthstone ! I love every color and type of Garnet. It would be so hard to choose!

I would put the anthill garnet as my favorite only because of the ant factor lol
When I heard you guys say that Spessartine garnets are magnetic I had to go find the big garnet crystal I mined at the old Ruggles mine in NH...and it was magnetic! I learned sumpin! Kewl!

I'm getting a gorgeous almandine in matrix (schist) tomorrow!!
She's got a beautiful smile 😍.
OMG!! I just love this episode. I was waiting for this.. Great job for this episode! Got my Tsavorite, Almandine, Spessartite and Rhodolite :)
Thought there were seven different types... everything but blue.
Love the 'ant hill' Arizona pyrope...deep red
Magnetic...cool
And grape garnet...
Constantly looking for one of those beautiful natural Cube matt looking finish garnets on matrix for my humble collection now !!!! 😊
Darryl's cuts are great! I love the ones that go from a traditional facet to like a matte intaglio look.
I Love the way they explain the Chemical Elements! I am learning a lot from these teachings! Thank you very much! 🙏🏽
Wow! What amazing timing. I was just trying to research a bit about identifying the different types of garnet
I just discovered your channel it's lovely and so educational. ❤

If I had to choose a favourite then I'd have to say Demantoid Garnet. The fire on those is just...😍🔥💚
my mom had passed on a necklace to me years ago with garnet in it , one stone is green and one is more of a dark purple color

Btw im a July baby but i have always like the deep red of garnet more than most prized Ruby.

I have a lovely Star Garnet from Idaho, and I’m curious about a color-changing garnet (think Alexandrite) I saw in a documentary. Is it a real thing?
Yes it is! We actually had color change garnets to feature in this video, but ran out of time. Hope to feature them soon!
I have a color change garnet ring, from JTV. I love it!!!!
Are the items shown on these episodes just company collection stock or are they items one can actually purchase?
can i just say that this channel is a hidden gem. 💎 btw Garnet is my birthstone. January peeps where you at?
Where do you buy this beautiful gems?
demantoid ofcourse. and the dark red ones. :)
3:25 According to the G.I.A. Gem Identification Lab Manual, Dravite is NOT a Variety of Tourmaline. Nice try.

I'll buy some
I remember growing up being so disappointed in how “bland” my birthstone was but it’s so complex! So glad I ran into the video. Now I have a different appreciation for garnets.
That was the idea!
Super video 📹 sir
I have plenty of stone which I can't identify , what is the name.. please help me to identify if this stone has a value?
