    If you're going to do an egt probe, drill a hole in the exhaust manifold. If you're post turbo, you'll be off a few hundred degrees.

    MBRP is a awesome exaust company. I live just down the road from their manufacturing shop in Huntsville, Ontario. I put a cat-back system on my truck 5 years ago. 4 months ago a rattle started and I figured out the baffles broke and were loose in the muffler. It only took 2 emails and they sent me a new muffler under warranty. It sounds awesome on your truck. All the shots from under your truck make me very jealous, mines a 2010 but thanks to all the salt/brine we put on the roads up here the undercarriage is rusted very badly. I just had to get the bottom 1/3 of the truck repainted. Very jealous of the almost no rust on yours.

    I just installed this exhaust on my 2000 Ford F-250 SD 7.3L Powerstroke. This video made it very simple. Getting the stock system out wasn’t bad. The bolt on the V-band was a booger to get off and some threads were jacked up but tap and die fixed that. Installation was pretty simple-ish. The joints were still a little loose even after torqued down (any suggestions???). Also, I added a black tip for aesthetics, but it seemed pretty heavy for the length, so I cut the pipe a couple inches so it wouldn’t stick out quite so far and reduce the torque/leverage in the system.
    All in all, it took me about three hours start to finish. Thank you for the great video!!! It made the job less daunting.

    • @TheBTRGarage
      @TheBTRGarage  2 года назад

      Thanks, glad the video was helpful! Are you talking about the slip joints being loose? You can always loosen them back up, make sure they are fully engaged, and re-tighten. I wouldn't worry about it too much though, unless it is an extreme situation.

    Put the egt gauge in the manifold like the others say. You also want the probe in the center. And to not have wall material making the temp the probe reads be less accurate. Also, cut the pipe so that the tip actually makes a sound difference. What's the point of the tip when the pipe is near the end of it.

    I really enjoy you're video's on the 7.3L, I use Flo-Pro exhaust system's because they use a better clamp, and the downpipe connection for the turbo flange is machined then welded. The EGT probe should be mounted in the driver side exhaust manifold for a more accurate reading, pre-turbo is under high pressure (temp) and the post turbo is low pressure so you generally get a few hundred degree's in temp change. I would really like too see you install the PHP Hydra chip over the DP tuner, the Hydra is ounce it's in you can change program's and buy custom tune's from several tuning guy's, much better chip.

    • @TheBTRGarage
      @TheBTRGarage  5 лет назад +1

      Thanks for the comments! After getting some feedback from you and others, regarding the EGT probe, I am going to move it to the manifold here soon. I'll make sure to do a video for that. I may switch to the Hydra chip in the future, but right now I'm running good with the DP Tuner and I have the one that allows you to add programs to it yourself as well. Really, all I use the truck for is towing and occasional daily driving, so I do not need many options.

    Hi great vid I noticed that you put the egt probe post turbo which is ok if you have one pre turbo or don't have a chip/tuner on the truck but if you do have one you must have one in the driver's side exhaust manifold ask me how I know 😥 I love the content and you are doing a good job with the truck keep up the good work 👍👍👍

    • @TheBTRGarage
      @TheBTRGarage  5 лет назад

      Thanks buddy! I do not have one in the manifold at the moment but I will look into that. The gauge instructions said it would be fine an inch or two from the turbo, hence the placement. Did you burn something up in your truck? Just curious what happened so I can avoid the same result if possible 😁

    • @TheFordf350superduty
      @TheFordf350superduty 5 лет назад

      @@TheBTRGarage yes I over heated the turbo not bad but it could have been real bad because you can cause the turbo seal to leak and then the motor will run away and it will not stop unless you block off air to the engine and if you can't then it won't stop until all the engine oil is gone 😬 most of the time you will melt the pistons first. But in my case the turbo was already weak so it just said no more which turned out to actually be a good thing because I heard it make a bad noise and stopped. Thanks Heath

      I do take into account that my EGT gauge will read a little lower because of the probe placement, so I do pay attention to that. I have DP Tuner on the truck but the only real work the truck gets is towing my enclosed trailer. I rarely see EGT's above 800F when towing, so far.

    Thats thebperfect spot for a egt on that exhaust system. A little planning goes a long way drilling and tapping with that out of the car is the easiest best way. That pipe is thin did the threads hold up for you?

    • @TheBTRGarage
      @TheBTRGarage  3 месяца назад +1

      It held up fine there. But, I did end up moving the probe into one of the exhaust headers on driver side (3rd one back from the front). The temp reading on the downpipe where I had it originally is about ~200° lower.

    • @theccwdad
      @theccwdad 3 месяца назад +1

      @@TheBTRGarage I wonder if that is heat soak in the piping. You want the exhaust gas temp not manifold temp and I would think that turbo outlet is the most accurate reading of what is happening. Downstream of all of the cylinders. They move o2 sensors on turbo gas cars further downstream to prevent fowling but up by the turbo is the most accurate reading.

    • @TheBTRGarage
      @TheBTRGarage  3 месяца назад

      @theccwdad Yea, that reasoning is why I put it right after the downpipe originally. But, you might notice in the comments several people saying that's wrong and put it in the manifold/header pipe 😁 I thought I'd do it just to test, so now I know what readings are in each spot.

    On the highway does this drone or is it OK? Jody at DP-Tuner that he needed to add a Corsa muffler on his Excursion to make long drives more pleasant. Also now that a year has gone by what happened to your MPG after the Tuner, intake and exhaust? One more question, did the location of the EGT work out, or should I drill into the turbo?

    • @TheBTRGarage
      @TheBTRGarage  3 года назад

      Sorry for the late reply, didn't see this! I'd say it doesn't drone much if at all. It is not quiet, but you just hear smooth V8 engine rumbling at highway cruising speeds. MPG did not change that much, maybe 1-2MPG while towing. What really changed was just the effort of the engine to pull loads and get up hills and inclines. With the stock stuff the truck was constantly chugging and downshifting on even the smallest of hills. Once the parts were on you could just hear and tell the engine was breathing more freely, rarely downshifting. EGT pyrometer works out fine in the spot I put it in, you just have to be aware it might be a couple hundred degrees higher than if you had it in the manifold runner (where most put it).

    A friend of mine just picked up a nice early 2000s Superduty dually with a 7.3 for a welding rig and it has 4" exhaust with nothing but a mbrp muffler thats outside diameter is not much larger than the pipe...like the O.D. of the muffler is like 4.5"! On a 4 inch pipe it's barely noticeable. it also has a aftermarket cold air intake. And it is not loud at all, it really doesn't sound a whole lot different than a stock truck...? are the 7.3 PS engines know for not having a very loud exhaust note? I've heard really loud diesel trucks and this is not one of them, what more could you do to it to have a nice rumble other than remove a muffler that's likely not doing much muffling anyway or is that muffler way more restrictive than it looks?

    • @TheBTRGarage

      Going to a 5" exhaust will make it louder, if thats what your friend is looking for. And/or straight pipe it with no muffler at all. So I have fake EGT's? 😂 I've heard this from multiple people already. • @jayonez137
    @jayonez137 5 лет назад +1

    EGT gauge Should not be installed in the downpipe. It goes behind the number 8 Cylinder on the exhaust manifold itself. You will be getting false cooler readings if you install EGT probe in the downpipe.
    EGT probe needs to be as close to the exhaust port on the head as possible. You are at least 200° cooler in the downpipe then you are in the exhaust manifold it’s self
    Just saying

    • @TheBTRGarage
      @TheBTRGarage  5 лет назад

      Right, this has been beaten to death already in the comments :) The Autometer instructions tell you to put the probe right after the turbo, IF you cannot install into the manifold. I couldn't at the time, so for now it is in the downpipe and I am aware that the temps are going to be lower.
      That said, I WILL be moving the EGT probe into the manifold for a more true reading in the near future here. Stay tuned for that video as well as the comparison of temps between the 2 locations!

    • @jayonez137
      @jayonez137 5 лет назад +1

      Yup yup. Gotcha!
      But it’s also very simple To just lay on your back under truck and drill hole and tap exhaust manifold.
      I know it sucks but it would have been done right the first time.
      Obviously you have to do this carefully so you don’t get metal shavings in Manifold.
      A good dose of grease on the tap helps with that and shop vac with tiny computer cleaning attachments.
      Good luck man!

      @@TheBTRGarage How is 77 mph an optimal tow speed? That’s not efficient at all, and certainly not safe with a trailer load.

    • @TheBTRGarage
      @TheBTRGarage  3 года назад

      That's where engine RPM's, EGT's, MPG, and gearing is optimal with my truck and engine (when in a 75mph speed limit zone). If I go 70-74mph it hunts between gears, EGT's climb, and boost fluctuates. If I go even slower, it is not optimal again until about 60mph in 3rd gear. I'm sure it's different for different trucks. As for safety, I tow where I feel confident in the truck, and this truck easily handles that load at that speed. In my old F150, I wouldn't get anywhere near that speed because the trailer overwhelms the truck.

    IMO leave the stock exhaust alone on these trucks except for maybe the muffler . These 4" slip joint exhaust systems are all kind of a pain in the butt to install and don't really do much for performance. And a lot of times they will rub and bang on stuff because of the larger piping and cause issues.
