During this fly tying tutorial, I chose to share some tools that are beneficial when tying the parachute post of a parachute dry fly. Though not required, parachute post tools help to make the task a lot easier and faster, two components that few can argue with. Feel free to share your own technique(s) regarding tying parachute posts, as I am positive that many additional and effective ones exist.
Thanks go out to Stonfo fly fishing products for their use of these parachute tools; you can find these and many more items at the following link: www.stonfo.it/s...

Tim, I love your videos!! I have been tying for many years now, but even us old dogs can learn some new tricks or even become inspired. This happened to me while watching this video. I have always hated tying parachute because it is hard to control the materials. However, your video gave me an idea that I thought maybe I should share. I have a Griffin Odyessy Spider Rotary Vise on a pedestal base. I took a piece of yarn, a spring from a pen, and an old pair of hackle pliers to make my homebrew rig. First, I cut the yarn into two pieces and measured them, I then tied them, one to each side of the spring. I then tied the hackle pliers to the one end and the other end I ran under the base and tied it to the vise post. So it goes yarn under the base to a spring to another piece of yarn to the hackle pliers. No, how it works...when I tie a parachute, I just rotate the fly upside down, attach the hackle pliers to the parachute wing material to keep tension on it, and then make my post. I then unhook it, flip it over, and tie the rest of the fly before flipping it upside down again to wrap the hackle. After I'm done, I just flip it upright, finish the head, and trim the wing. It works great. Just thought this might help someone else who is looking for an inexpensive way to manage their materials when tying a parachute...Thanks, Rick

I’m trying to think if mounting to an accessory post makes more sense….. or perhaps just turning the fly upside down with a gator clip on the post and let gravity pull the post down. I suppose I could use hackle pliers instead of a clip. For deer belly-hair posts the problem I run into is how the fibers flare out…. are there better techniques like UV resin to bind the post fibers together at the base ?

Hi Mark, and the one that I use most often is from Stonfo. It fits vises with stems between 8 - 10mm, so find out what the stem size is for your vise and go from there. I like Stonfo tools, and I've tied on their Kaiman vise, which I like. I don't the big benefit to that tool. It just seems in the way. Maybe I'm wrong. I know I would have to get it and tie 3-4 dozen before having a real opinion, but I don't find parachuts all that difficult to make conventionally.

Thanks for the comments, and I'm also on the fence with the tool (and those in general when it comes to parachutes). Fortunately, it is easy to maneuver out of the way, however it's not one I keep attached to my vise unless I am planning on tying a BUNCH of parachute flies. Speaking to the larger picture, I do prefer Stonfo tools over others on the market today, and their Rotodubbing Twister Elite is something I just love to use. Thanks again for taking a moment to comment, and look forward to hearing more from you on some of my other videos. Tim www.troutandfeather.com

Tim, I have a question for you, somewhat off topic, but I'm sure you have the answer. I purchased a set of bobbins with ceramic inserts, now, is there any type of dressing / polishing that I should do to the ceramic, because they are fraying my danville 70 denier thread? Or was a just taken with this purchase? Is there something I can do to polish out the ceramic to smooth it?

J0Gu7 I'm sorry to hear you're having the problem, and the bobbin is one possible culprit. Some other areas to check include the thread quality, bobbin tension, thread rubbing against your fingers before going into the bobbin, and the thread touching the hook point. If you can rule those out, then the bobbin may be defective, and I have never tried polishing one...maybe steel wool? I wish I had more information on that, but the last time I had a similar problem, I realized that I was placing my hand on the thread prior to it entering the bobbin, causing it to weaken. Here's a link that may be helpful: www.flytyingforum.com/index.php?showtopic=64284 Good luck, and let me know what you figure out. Tim

Hi Tim, I have a couple of cheap ceramic bobbins that I bought for tying with wire. The ceramic tube was angled and rough so I dressed the ends square using a Dremel tool with a "diamond disk" blade. I polished the inside edges of the tube with a Dremel "flame" shaped diamond tool bit by twisting the bit with my fingers. Use a light touch as little pressure is needed. Hope this helps. Hank
