I'm currently a Police Officer, my peers and I have sat together and watched this episode over and over, and discussed all our schools layouts and how to approach so we never have any radio confusion. On day shift I go around and start just pulling on all the external doors to see if they are unlocked. Personally I believe all departments from Federal Agency's to school security guards should run threw drills in the schools in which they are close to, for this kind of situation. STOPPING THE THREAT AND PROTECTING THE CHILDREN IS OUR HIGHEST PRORITY.

How about instead of that, we actually pass stringent gun laws that European countries and literally everyone else has, because it’s the easy access to guns that cause this. Literally no where else in the world, are the issue of school shootings present. And how about we fund mental health facilities too? But no school shootings is the cost of “freedom,” but are you really “free” if for the first 18 years of your life, you’re living under imminent fear and danger that one day you’ll be killed in school? Is that an environment conducive to learning and producing functioning adults?

The cop who ran out with the girl and hesitated to take an open shot I feel is VERY accurate - not every cop, even with training, knows how they'll react in a lethal situation like this. He was a probably (like you said) a day-shift cop thrown into this high-stakes mess where his biggest threat is getting a papercut at the printer. I live in Canada - and a cop like this probably has never drawn his gun before on duty. Or dealt with screaming and piles of dead children. He froze, and understandably so.

I definitely think that it a lot to ask someone with no prior combat experience and someone who's worked in a high crime area, to try and step up in this situation. It's a tall order for anyone, but I do think that this is more of a failure in training than content of character.

@@OnlyCops In the series, the cop who got shot had a history of fighting his demons. As a young kid, he found a gun in his house, toyed with it and shot his sister while the parents were also somewhere else in the house.
In the show ,he starts as a good cop whose an alcoholic come sun down, all this shooting and bloodied kids puts him in this state and he struggles every step of his recovery (from killing his sister, alcohol withdrawal and letting the team down).

"Day shift cop" describes Jean-Marc Brouillard perfectly. I hated him every time he was on screen by the end of season 1, which god bless Dan Petronijevic for playing the role so freaking perfectly. JM was all bark and no bite, and it's a recurring theme that continuously agitates the other officers until it comes to a head in season 4 where he finally grows a pair at his lowest point.

I know it isn't as obvious when reacting like this: the beginning of the shooting is filmed in one extremely long shot (I think it's almost 10 minutes without any cuts). In my eyes that's an absolute masterpiece production-wise.

It's closer to 13 minutes, and while there are some obvious times built into the take for hidden cuts (slow pans on lockers and the like) I don't think they used any. Either their editor is amazing or they truly managed it all in a single take, either way it's incredible.

So yes, those 2 dudes are the main guys in the show - but the show is kinda all about the mental health and story of the division. So, a lot of the characters that acted strange, like the guy who carried out the girl, or the officer that got shot and hesitated, it was based around their fucked up mental state that was already established in the show. So they are known to the viewer to be a lil unstable already. It's also a Canadian show as you guys know. And quite frankly, these situations dont really happen in Canada. There's been maybe half a dozen like it in the past century. So a lot of the uniform officers will not have extensive training on active shooters. So the instances where they miss opportunities to neutralize the threat or make a weird move are actually kinda realistic. These aren't American cops. They don't have patrol rifles, or plate carriers to grab, and they don't have school shooting drills or training specific to that. So the mistakes are an intentional move by the writers.

The original 19-2 dates back from 2011, so that scene was probably in 2012. It was inspired by the Dawson College shooting in Montreal in the early-mid 2000s.
If I recall correctly, following that shooting, Montreal police learned from their experience and instituted policy and training changes such that their officers would follow basically the same advice you gave: get in quickly, find the shooter and isolate/neutralize them.

The 2006 Dawson shooting was actually the first time Montreal police had to put those ROE/training changes in practice. I was in a situation like this in a school: police took forever to respond, wouldnt enter the building under fire, radio traffic gave dispatch away giving the shooter a chance to fully supress the first 4 cops that went in 2 of whom didnt have body armor, and one was hit in the leg. A shop teacher had his pickup parked between the cafeteria and the shop building to move some equipment, he grabbed a shotgun from the truck and put a slug in the kid from behind as everyone else cowered, nearly ripped his arm off and he bled out. The community kept it pretty hush as it all happened in about 8 mins and a cop and the assailant are the only ones that got hurt. Ironically not far from where we lived a principal did the same thing, simply getting a revolver from his truck when he saw a kid attempt to enter the building with a sporting rifle while he was sitting in the parking lot drinking his coffee. These incidents make me happy we live in the sort of place where its not frowned upon for teachers to have weapons on campus and following these encounters its now a policy at the school that teachers carry (voluntarily), half the district signed up and a young lady I went to school with is one of those very teachers.

So, this scene was shot in early 2012. Protocols then were dictated mostly by Polytechnique and Columbine. Furthermore, this is based out of Montreal, Quebec. Most police officers in Canada don't have rifles, and a lot of them only wear level 2 soft armour. Furthermore, Montreal Police had a policy against earpieces for a long time. I'm not sure if that still applies, I left the city in 2016. Also, yes, Montreal used Walther PPQ's. So did the SPAL (Longueuil). They've switched to Sig's. SQ uses Glocks.

The way departments get anal about attachments and uniformity is one of my biggest pet peeves. I was a reserve deputy for a decent sized county in Central Arkansas. We were allowed to have red dots or irons on our rifles. Magnified optics were not allowed unless you were on SRT (our SWAT equivalent). I asked our armorer and he said "magnification gives some shooters overconfidence. SRT can have magnification because they train more". This was back in 2016. I was prior military so i had years of experience with the ACOG 4x but couldn't use one because the armorer thought some people took bad shots when they could see things better. I went to a different department in 2019 which was a lot more lenient. While it is true some people try to substitute gear for training and skill there is this thing called qualification and in service training to put these theories to the test. Qualification isn't the real thing, but you can do this thing called an experiment where you give a pool of deputies a magnified or unmagnified optic and see what happens. But thats way too big brained an idea for admin.

    • @haiwin224
      @haiwin224 5 месяцев назад +2

@@OnlyCops Yeah. It's frustrating. We had a policy that if you modified your duty handgun or rifle in any way (regardless of if it was a functional change or not) we would have to requalify with the weapon twice. Installed new night sights on your Glock? Qualify twice to prove you can qualify and it's not a fluke. Install a weapon light on a Glock? Get to qual day early you're going twice. New trigger group on your rifle? Well either lie and say it was that way last year or guess what? Fire twice and like it. Added a new pistol grip, handguard, stock, or vertical foregrip to your AR? You guessed it qual twice. Change what brand of weapon light you use? Ah shit better go 2x to make sure you didn't forget fundamentals of marksmanship in the interim. State standards for Arkansas has no requirement or guidance on this. It was just a policy put in place to discourage modification of weapons from stock. At the time the Sheriff's office I worked for didn't have a range of their own. So the armorer straight up told us that he wouldn't go and just rent any of the municipal ranges for just one person to get a new configuration on paper. We would have to wait until it was annual qualification to install any changes.

I was in high school when it happened and my teachers were pretty stressed listening to it on the radio. The end result was that the local police basically were retrained for these scenarios where a lot of the things you were pointing out are actually done. Incidentally, when my school was threatened to be shot up we had a few cops show up as “security” but not much else happened. My parents were pretty pissed too because they found out about the threat on the radio and not from school administrators 🤷🏽‍♂️

I sometimes think that kid with the headphone is an idiot, then I remembered I spent 30 minutes of a code red inside of a piano room within the choir room, only to come out and see everyone was still sitting there cause I had eaten lunch with my headphones on. Not a cop, but curious what your or other cops’ takes would be, when they first hear the rounds and go in, do you think it would be a bad idea to go back to the car real quick to grab a rifle? You’re sacrificing an extra 15-20 seconds yes, but you’re also now armed with a more precise weapon so you can smoke this guy faster…

The logic is very sound so you're not wrong that you will be better equipped that way. Josh got a chance this past year to take an active shooter response class with Kyle Morgan (Delta Force) and his response to this question was "do the victims have that time? You have a gun and a vest, learn how to make a difference with skills not gear because nothing you fo will give you back the time you lose when trying to stop evil".

I read that most "mass shootings" have been stopped prematurely by friends, family, and school "reporting" and that the ones that actually get that far are pretty rare statistically. That's scary. Perhaps more training on what and when to report would be helpful at and more productive than focusing on finger-pointing or which laws to change after the fact?

    • @OnlyCops
      @OnlyCops  6 месяцев назад +3

I think it's actually an issue WAY before then. I think having resources for parents, kids, and teachers/community leader to provide safer spaces for kids to grow up insolated from issues or concepts they are not ready to handle or divert kids and young adults out of environments that aren't conducive to healthy coping skills would prevent more than just mass shootings. I think it could reduce domestic violence, single parent house holds, and violent crime associated by gang culture/operations.

Important information: Canada does mot have standard rifle training. Most officers train with pistols and shotguns, sometimes rifles, but most officers don't carry rifles. Not even in the car
Rcmp (Federal Police) got rifle training as standard/required training, in the last 20 years
OPP (My province's provincial police like state police) has had it before RCMP.
If your looking for Canadian content look up the Mayerthorpe tragedy, Nova Scotia mass casualty shooting, moncton shooting,
All of these are Shootings where cops were killed because of Command failures.
Moncton - 3 constables dead 2 constables shot.
    Mayerthorpe- 4 federal constables dead.
Nova socita mass casualty shooting, 1 constables dead, 21 civilans dead, plus a constable almost murdered by SWAT when guarding a fire hall

@@OnlyCopsI always get a little annoyed when you guys talk about your lieutenant or your captains making mistakes, but here in Canada our police fuck up so often, and it costs so many lives...
And I hate to be the pessimist, but it really seems like they need to learn.
They literally suspended rifle training for federal constables, because somebody died by a taser. And that's one of the main factors that allowed the Moncton tragedy to happen because the only rifle for that entire Detachment / station was an hour away or something. Training other officers with the rifle use.

I am not blaming the victims here (even though he is completely a fictional character), I'm explaining the psychology of the situation. Do you trust a dude running around a school shooting people to help you or spare you if you comply? The more you let a situation like that play itself out you realize it never ends well. Once someone is committed to violence, whether it's something as small as an assault or large as this scenario, you have to be realistic about your expectations for safety. "Run, Hide, Fight" is taught in a ton of general safety classes and is an easy principle to adhere to. Our reactions to this type of media is informed by real life experiences and training and our hope to to help educate people on misconceptions and or how to safety navigate these scenarios if (God forbid) they are ever presented with them. Our knee jerk reaction comes from us knowing the consequences of that characters failure to act against what the shooter was asking them to do, and it played itself out as it likely would in reality....

Do you think at 13:00, those other cops should have announced themselves in some way before coming up behind their colleagues? I don"t know the protocol, but since this is such a high-pressure situation, even if the main guys are expecting the shooter to be in front of them, being startled by something behind them probably isn't the best thing to have happen (although another "shout out" to their calmness), even if the people startling them are their colleagues. I mean, a quick look behind that door would have shown that the main cops were standing their, and then they could have knocked or said something before stepping out. Thoughts?

Great question and observation! It's never good to surprise people under stress. We would typically yell something like "blue on blue" to give them a heads up if we got into a cross fire situation or were approaching each other in a lethal force situation.

A lot of this is hard to decipher because I'm not quite sure about the differences in lethal force in Canada vs the USA
I'm born and raised Canadian, and I've only heard of maybe two or three shootings here, one was a mass shooter dressed as police in Nova Scotia, the other was a shooting on a farm, the owner thought the guy was trespassing for malicious reasons, but he was supposedly just cutting the yard. for NS, the guns weren't legal, I'm not sure about the farmer, but standing ground with lethal force isn't legal as a civilian here, you can get charged for hitting someone in self-defense, and forget about it if you're armed in any way. As for cops, I don't know the stance, I haven't heard of any OIS here, either taking fire or giving it

The frequency they’d written the officers leaving themselves vulnerable is insane. Concealment is not cover; both ways. Jiggling doors while standing full in the threshold is a bad idea + Discussions when someone can shoot through walls is a bad idea. Windows are death ports. Unchecked rooms/hallways in an area the shooter fled to are equally dangerous. Few trailers to set security on cleared areas, retain rear security (there were quickly enough LE on scene for this). Unsuppressed close quarters peeping without a raised weapon towards a shooter having a bead on your position. The hesitation and audible discussion over dropping an exposed shooter. The abject inability to even try to physically assist your dying partner. Flagging open areas with body/limb exposure and bad angles. The idiocy of deconsolidating an additional asset to your fireteam multiple times to lone wolf themselves (just on an errantly misplaced principle of a partner system) increasing their own risk of confliction with other units. Etc. Dramatically - Very sobering for people all the same.

Meanwhile I'm just over here in Sweden in complete awe that you guys even have to have this much knowledge about school shootings. To a point where you can watch a fictional clip like this and draw real parallels to situations you've actually been in. Now, I understand that in America specifically there's a lot of pride in being able to own a gun, and protect your family and your home and all that jazz. I get that most likely that's never going to change. But here's a novel idea: You. Don't. Need. An. Assault. Rifle. For. That! Want to own a handgun that you're trained to use and keep safely in your home in case of an emergency? Fine. But you don't need to have access to anything as high powered as a rifle. I usually see people argue that "well, even if they just have a handgun they can still murder people" and while this is true in a general sense, a handgun does not compare to an assault rifle. The damage you can do with one does not compare to the damage you can do with the other.
And some people are just so gosh dang insistent on owning guns that you want to rip your hair out. There's an older episode of Dr. Phil (yuck over that guy, but I digress) where a mum's on the show because she's concerned that her young son might actually be a budding school shooter. Dr. Phil is like "so ya'll got any guns in your home" and the mum replies "oh, yes, about fifty of them". THE HECK?! Who on earth needs that many guns?! And in a home with someone you actually suspect might take them and go out and murder kids?! Where would you even store that many guns? Like, in ten gun safe's tucked against a wall? In bowls around the house like violent pot-puri? Dear lord, make it make sense!
Sorry for the absolute rant, you guys were actually very informative and I did appreciate this video, it's just so baffling to me. When I was in school as a kid the most I had to worry about were if I'd accidentally call the teacher mum, or if Jessica had told Anna that I had said her birthday party was boring, or if the guy I had a crush on would talk to me that day... I never went to school wondering if that would be the day I would be murdered. I wish videos like this didn't need to exist because no one would ever need to have this knowledge, whether you're a cop or just a civilian.

I totally appreciate your passion and prospective on the subject. To be fair, Bi and I were police officer in a very bad part of a very bad city that was far from representative of America as a whole it's actually incredibly rare for officers to respond to a call like this even if they have a 20 year career.
We are an incredibly large and diverse country and unique issues from one country to the next. Places like Chicago and Los Angeles have FAR more violent crime than 99% of our country, but we are often treated like a monolith in memes/political conversations.
It would be like combining the violence in Ukraine or Syria to Sweden's and saying "Europe is such a dangerous place to live". America, despite what the internet would like you to think is an incredibly safe place and we have fewer guns and more gun restrictions now than ever in our nation's history. The uptick in "gun violence is indicative more from the current trend of political divisiveness and news sensationalizing what's happening here rather than our daily reality.
I'm in marketing, if someone you are watching or reading is causing you to have a strong emotional response, it's likely trying to bias you. It's why we do this show 😊

@@OnlyCops I definitely get what you're saying. Obviously not being American and never having lived there I'm not going to pretend that I *get* it completely. I simply can't, and as you say the information I do have access to is largely biased, regardless of which direction it's biased towards.
And I do appreciate that there are channels like yours that do talk frankly about subjects like this from personal experience and not with a specific political agenda or anything. Just sharing your thoughts and feelings based on actual things you've seen and gone through - regardless of what the subject matter is or what country someone's from I think this is extremely important.
I guess in a sense it just saddens me that this channel and videos like this are even needed. Like, for example when you guys talked about how in this situation there's no talking to the kid with a gun it's just about taking him out to protect the other innocent kids in the school - it saddens me that this is a reality. I agree with it, in a situation like this there is no de-escalating there is only stopping the perpetrator by any means necessary even if it means taking their life. But at the same time it's sad that that's how it has to be handled, you know?
I appreciate the answer and I'm absolutely not trying to paint America as the worst country ever (because let's face it, it's not, even I know that) but when it comes to school shootings and such it does get the most world wide coverage and the information is way more accessible (although of course not always accurate).
Thank you for the reply and for a further explanation. I do take pride in the fact that I do want to know the truth regardless of whether it aligns with what I'd previously thought or not, and I don't just swallow everything and anything I see/read as absolute fact without questioning the validity of the information.

So these guys just proved that every scene in Hollywood might have some facts in it but is romanticized to some extent that it just doesn't look real. Here you go internet, you got your answer. @@OnlyCops the show is filmed in a darker tone and the episode with more emotion, like you can tell that they are afraid and some of the scenes are shot a bit differently with a bit more focus on the two protagonists (Berroff and Chartier) and less jumping around. If you have time I recommend watching it

When it comes to America, we are collectively the most complex populations in the world, not to mention among the biggest. Though our issues are definitely unique, when you look at crime overall (even including violent crime like shootings) it's incredibly rare to see events like what was depicted here. Though 1 is far too many, when we share the world with both individuals, gangs, and governments; there is unfortunately the unavoidable reality of human nature. We are pretty far from have anyone follow a universal moral code that we can all agree on and I would hate to be in a world where a small group of people get to decide that for us all. Individual sovereignty, bodily autonomy, and self determinism unfortunately create suffering

And they need to train kids especially and teachers to find a way to take down the shooters .. but also if they do would the cops know the kids that took down the shooters aren't the shooters right off hand or do they automatically shoot or investigate or arrest ?

Amend your gun laws for Christ's sake, surley your childrens right to survive a school year is more important than a 2nd amendment

    • @OnlyCops
      @OnlyCops  4 месяца назад

This is a pretty limited prospective on what's really a more complicated issue. More guns won't help the same way less guns won't help prevent these situations.
As someone who has actually saved childrens lives (and have been at ground zero when it's too late) there are WAY more than just laws or lack there of dropping the ball when these awful situations play themselves out.
Guns are by far one of the most legislated against items a person can own here in America and it's done nothing to curb the overall issue we have with violence.
These scenarios are often utilized on both sides of the argument because it's either sell more guns or take them away. Gain votes or lose votes for which ever party is your flavor. But nobody ever wants to talk about the underlying issues around the senseless violence or what wasn't done to prevent it. Instead then pounce on it as an opportunity to get political brownie points while those of us who have actually been victimized are left holding the bag.
The actual solution to this issue is somewhere between where you and I sit on this politically, but it's unfortunate that today's culture surrounding discourse likely will prevent us as a society to get there.

@@OnlyCops surely you see the disbelief that other 1st world countries have where atrocities like this do not happen and where firearms are not illegal, only the laws to get one are very strict. Unfortunately the US will always have its school children taken from their schools in body bags every year until your gun laws are amended. Every US school child's death since Sandyhook has regrettably been in vain and meaningless if the lessons to save just 1 child after every shooting is ignored 😔

so , this reminds me of the 1st time my bestfriend caught up in some shooting when he was a rookie officer and in the middle of the shooting he sends me a voice message where he asks me to take care of his parents if he never returns . To be honest , I was scared too. those were the hardest 30 mins of my life . after 30 mins we get a call stating officer Murphy is shot and is in surgery right now . Me whole panicked and all goes to the hospital finding out that he is out of danger and that dog was shot in his butt. I laughed so hard even the nurse couldn't resist , I know I am a terrible friend LOL . And to a fair coincidence , the episode of Brooklyn 99 when Detective Boyle gets shot in his butt was aired. We streamed that episode in his hospital room and that's how that show became our favourite LOL . Its Season 1 , ep 11 I guess , HAHAHA .....Hey , you can react to that too , it's a funny episode . I used to make fun of him asking if his buttholes are okay🤣. Sadly he passed away from pancreatic cancer at just 26 , I still miss his beautiful smile❤‍🩹
