It's nice to see that the Tarrasque is getting some of its old menace back from earlier editions. The original was basically Godzilla (personally, I think the 2nd Edition tarrasque had the best art).
@xriban4363 that's a piece of loot that parties won't have in the early game, generally. I know there are stronger kobold variants with more HP, but still. It's a buff IMO because they're now immune to various low-level spells that only target humanoids.
As a DM, this is way more important than the DMG. I’m genuinely so excited to read everything and look through the art. Nothing inspires me to make adventures like a good bestiary.
@PackTactics That's what I was thinking while watching your review. I probably will stick with 2014 for my game, but I'll use the new MM. The next liche that tries to Finger of Death them won't go down in one round! Mwahahaha
@@PackTacticsThe change to the giant Eagle,Owl, and Elk seems like they were trying to take good utility forms away from the druid. There is also the loss of combat mounts. I am fond of the idea of the druid being the mount for someone like the fighter or Paladin then again Clerics might have fun with having an AOE spell, with the druid having an AOE spell and the Cleric swinging away in a double aura.
@@nickm9102 it seems more likely that the reason was "Does this monster talk? If yes, it's no longer a mundane creature like a beast." They wanted Beasts to just be "normal" (non-magical) creatures. At least, that's part of the stated goal behind the changes to some creature types. I'm fine with it. I've seen enough giant eagles/owls. I'm sure we'll find other beasts to use, as not all of the big flying beasts could understand languages.
@@probablythedm1669 When did a giant Eagle, Owl, or Elk ever have speech? Understanding a language is very different. Admittedly they are among the most intelligent beasts from 2014. The only remaining beasts with an INT above 5 are the Giant Ape at 7 and the Raven at 5 and the Raven has Mimicry So are they saying that the Giant Ape is incapable of understanding speech when there are humanoids that have a lower INT and language proficiency? I know that they are unlikely to change it back but the Idea that they are no longer beasts because they can understand language is a bad design choice at best or a very deliberate nerf to Druid Wild shape and Polymorph since they already decimated the Conjurer Animals spell among others.
On the plus side the new conjure spells won't make your DM groan each time you make a druid and the rest of your party won't have to wait 10 minutes for you to decide what each of your 10 summoned squirrels will do.
Yeah this is a big boost to Bear Totem barbarians (who do get that). I would never have considered playing a totem barbarian before but now it's probably one of the best options
19:39 I really dislike the recent shift away from beast/humanoid creature types. It seems like the smallest hint of a planar origin is enough to completely override the type and make everything no longer a beast/humanoid. So, Charm Person no longer works on kobolds (yay for memes, bad for balance), Druids can no longer Wildshape into giant eagles, etc. Really not a fan, and i think a dual-type system would work way better (elves = fey humanoid, owlbear = monstrous beast, tiamat = fiendish dragon, etc).
I think my biggest issue with the new typing is how types work with PCs. My PC Elf can be absolutely whammied by a hold person spell, but an Elf NPC cannot. It’s dumb and lazy.
This is how pathfinder 2e works. And 1e. also dnd 4e. And Magic The Gathering. How few designers are left at wotc that they keep churning out this slop?
I love using the new Leap in an area of Difficult Terrain. Party was slogging at about 15 ft./turn. Enemy would use the 30 ft. as Move 10 ft. (with 20 ft.) and Leap 30 ft. (with 10 ft.) = 40 ft./turn.
I was thinking about playing a lycanthrope character as my next character. The removal of immunities will make it an easier sell, and I hope it still has PC lycanthropy rules in there to properly work with.
I think the bigger hit to Barbarians will be the number of monsters have any type of elemental damage now. Cause non-bear Barbarians (which in theory should be the majority) are still hit full force by those.
Given that the statblock he showed had "Initiative +5 (15)", it might be that liches have a 17 passive initiative if the DM doesn't want to roll for it and +7 normal initiative. Or maybe it's actually +17
I love just looking through Monster Manuals and dreaming up ideas for campaigns. Actually writing them is pain, but dreaming them up is a grand time! Looking forward to this!
I think the lycanthrope immunity was super flavourful, especially since all you needed was a silvered weapon. I will probably still run them with the immunity but in general glad about the change.
As someone who hasn't switched to the 2024 rules in my campaign (we're like 80% done so there's no point) would these new stat blocks be crazy to use against a 2014 party?
Could you elaborate on your opinion on challenge rating in the new books? My understanding was that it was changed, did they make it more accurate, useful, or easier to calculate at all?
whaaat? no more giant eagle/owl for great mobility and transportation for the party? are there other good options that players can now use through wild shape or polymorph?

Huh, I'm curious if they keep the the narrative of some of the boosted monsters. Something that always bothers me about Kobold Press books is that they constantly make high CR monsters just to fill out the CR curve, without really thinking about the implications of putting a CR15 monster as a random thing you'll commonly find in nature. Do monsters still have magic resistance? That + legendary resistance kinda makes spellcasters feel bad unless they're blasting with fireballs for the save for half stuff.
19:38 I think they are trying to stick to the criteria, "Real World Aminals" for beasts. So things like Giant Eagle has to be re-categorized. But then, their definition for a "Monstrosity" is a "wizard/weird magic altered or merged beasts" that does not cut for things like Giant Eagle either. So I guess they went, let's make them be from the Beastlands and make them Celestials. Sucks for Druid and Polymoph though. Just see how much they were used in tables like Critical Role.
In my campaign, animal lords will be fey rather then celestial . Making beast creatures celestials makes old religion vs new religion stories completely obsolete when done like this
Great review. I like the tougher monsters, but I'm disappointed that they turned so many go-to beasts into other creature categories just to screw druids.

7. So freaking glad they brought this back. I hated that they left Habitat and Treasure out of 5th Edition. All the old MMs had that in the stat block, plus more.... at least we got those two back. i bet theres a ton of "new" things in this book that aren't new at all, and despite all the trash talking they've been doing of the original creator crew, wotci just copied all the older editions so Crawford could tell us about all the "exciting new things in the 2024 update" 😂😂😂😂😂
I feel like instead of giving strong enemies high Initiative and Legendary Actions, they should just be given "Priority Points" each turn. They should have to roll for imitative like any other character, but then, say they end up in 3rd place, they can spend Priority Points to overtake the players and still go first, then, once they've taken their turn and at least one player has taken a turn, they can spend any remaining points to advance up the initiative order from zero, allowing them multiple turns per round. The better their initial initiative placing, the more they can "lap" the players, but even in extreme cases they couldn't get to go more times than there are players before the round restarts. Some enemies would have more of this than others, and some enemies could _only_ use this to get bonus actions, rather than to jump ahead in the rotation. Likewise, they couldn't jump ahead if surprised.
When the dmg came out and I flipped through it.the lack of customizing monsters more than the little section on swapping a few abilities. It was easily my biggest disappointment because it's the section of the book I use the most next to building an encounter. I haven't read really much of dmg or phb this time a round because they came out just in time for me to start my campaign so I was already ready to go. The preview season for phb was also very useful.
(Low AC) + (Low Temp HP) + (Low +Hit Chance) + (Buffed Monsters) = sad druid noises while in Wild Shape. Actually how do they compare to "Base Line" Warlock (or Rogue w/x-bow)?
Honestly I'm so glad they got rid of nonmagical immunity and just buffed the monsters health instead, means casters can't just utterly nuke something as easily while also making sure martials aren't useless without magic items. I just hope that nonmagical resistance is reduced as well for the same reasons
I'm play-testing allowing our Moon Druid to Shapeshift into a (limited) selection of: Fey and Monstrosities. (Inspiration from allowing Owlbears in the movie...) Some of the more "normal" creatures work very well. Winter Wolf, anyone?!!!
