Are you friggin kidding me?! Earl Klugh and Hiram Bullock, with Donald Fagan, Patti Austin, David Sanborn singing one of my favorite songs! And...Marcus Miller was the musical director! I'm in my feels?
I hate to be that guy, but there are tons of great talented artists around today. Jacob Collier, RAYE, Snarky Puppy and many more. The 80's were a magical time for music, but there was a lot of crap as well. From the tail end of disco we got drum machines and sequencers reducing the need for musicians/producers to be good instrumentalists. The year IGY came out was 1982. The #1 song that year was Physical by Olivia Newton John. I like to go back and look at the charts sometimes and go down the list and find a bunch of songs that make me say, 'what the heck were we thinking?' 🤪
@@troubleondemand7703PLEASE be “that guy”. Enough of the “music was better then” nonsense. There was bad music then too just as there’s great stuff now. This whole “music is terrible now” thing is utterly tedious.
Just beautiful people making some beautiful music together! I miss the days when you could catch David Sanborn sitting in with Paul Schaeffer and the Band on Late Night with Letterman. And, Patti Austin's voice is a flawless force of nature! ❤
Wow, The Sunday Night Band itself is a treasure (Marcus Miller, Omar Hakim, Hiram Bullock, Philippe Saisse), but with this line-up the musical value is infinite...
Marvelous vocal! Catching how important inflection is to fagen's singing and to his music. The inflection, and the prosody in the vocal convey the meaning of the song. Beautifully done here!
Thank you so much for remixing this and sharing it here. What a great little treasure. As was that short-lived sister music show to SNL. Such great infinite diversity in infinite combination (IDIC, iykyk) as with this ensemble performing this rendition of “I.G.Y.”
Amazing-sounding remaster on my 5.1 surround sound! A performance like that deserved to be seen & heard in its entirety. Too bad the show had to cut off a masterpiece.
This song (Rhythm Logic's version feat. Maysa Leak) was my introduction to the music of Donald Fahen and Steely Dan. Brings back many sweet memories of youth.
Thank you for sharing this wonderful live studio video. I am also impressed with the remastered sound. If possible, I would like to see the full version of this TV show. Thank you for your consideration.
Wow..wow..wow!!!.. I've seen this video before, but with video tape errors & in a shorter format...never seen it this complete!!..There must be a longer, more complete version sitting in a TV archive somewhere, before they added the end credits..Being here in UK, we didn't get mainstream access to the show..but I noticed Jools Holland was the compere..He went on to be (still is) the presenter of 'Later with Jools Holland' on the BBC.
Don by this point had pretty much had a whole decade of being out of the live music game, i’m amazed he even agreed to do this show. it’s such a gem to see him performing 😌
I saw this when it first aired. Besides being a wonderful performance, it gave me hope that Don was re-emerging and we might finally hear more from him. Then the New York Rock and Soul Review happened and Don and Walter relaunched Steely Dan. It was all a Dan fan could wish for and was the best thing about the 1990s for me.
Wow. I bought "The Nightfly" album brand new, on CASSETTE, and proceeded to wear it out. Still one of my very favorites. And until now, I'm embarrassed to say it never occurred to me that it had a reggae beat.
Finding videos like these is what RUclips is all about. Magnificent! David Sanborn, Patti Austin and the great Donald Fagen. Sign. Me. Up.
Also, Earl Klugh and Hiram Bullock(rip)
A total matter of opinion !
Philippe Saisse on keys also
I second that great comment!

Mind. Blown.
I love this song/album by Donald Fagen. Never ever heard this version. Way too short.
My god, she nailed this
Those were the days! Our Miss Patti and friends, Elaine Caldwell, Lani Groves, Vivian Cherry and Vanesse Thomas!
Simply sublime!

I was wondering who the backup signers were.

Patti is Sensational.
Magnificent Voice & cover of a Wonderful Song.
Oh, wow! She could belt it out, for sure. Excellent.
Daaaay Ammmmm … that is some incredible master talent right there …. BRAVO indeed
IGY is just a phenomenal song, a mix of jazz and reggae. Patti made Donald proud of her.
What a Beautiful World this will be!!!!

“Trust machines to make big decisions.” We’re there
It's actually "A just machine to make big decisions". But it works with your lyric also.
First time seeing and hearing this. Totally awesome. . .....

It certainly didn't deserve to be treated as an afterthought like that.

I absolutely love this, all of my favorites.
