I agree...mostly...however, I will add a few... This is how one should read the Batman books...
1st - Year One
2nd - Batman: The Man Who Laughs (retelling of the first encounter between Batman and the Joker)
3rd - Long Halloween
4th - Dark Victory
5th - Killing Joke
6th - Death in the Family (set up for the next 3)
7th - Hush
8th - Under the Red Hood
9th - Three Jokers (sequel to Killing Joke)
10th - anything in between the 9th and last...
Last - Dark Knight Returns (this is the proper end to the Batman story)

So far I’ve got Joker by Brian Azzarello, killing Joke and the three jokers and I’m planning on buying the man who laughs, under the red hood and a death in the family. Also thinking of getting Batman Year One and long Halloween in The Batman movie collection box set of the comics

As the new 52, there are Court of Owls - Night of Owls - Death of the Family - Endgame (As a reboot in the origin stories, there is Batman: Zero Year)
Dark Knight's Return is not considered as cannon but it's a good finale for the story.

For beginners: Batman: Year One, Catwoman: Her Sister's Keeper, The Man Who Laughs, The Long Halloween, Batman: Dark Victory, TDKR: The Last Crusade, The Dark Knight Returns, The Dark Knight Strikes Again, DK3: The Master Race, and finally Batman: Year 100. Also read The Killing Joke (I have no idea how it fits into the continuity above, but it's a great book).

sparky far from it. TDKR is one of the best graphic novels I’ve ever read. However, I will say I didn’t like TDKR strikes again and all star Batman and robin tho, those sucked.

The dark knight returns should NEVER be a comic for first timers. It should always be one of the last. It’s an elseworlds take on the character and not a good representation of the main personality of the character. TDKR is amazing after you get to know batman.

I disagree a bit. As long as you just know batman like his story n all I think it can really make someone interested in it because it shows what happened to an iconic hero

I wish I could go back to reading comics for the first time. I started for real like 5 years ago and made a big effort to read the batman classics. Year One, Killing Joke, Long Halloween, The Man Who Laughs, Arkham Asylum, Dark Knight Returns. They’re always fresh no matter how many times I revisit them.
Nice video with some solid picks! If someone asked me where they should start, I would definetely tell them to start with the New 52. I'm nearing the end of my first readthrough, and that run just encapsulates everything great about Batman and delivering some greats stories in "Court of Owls", "Death of the Family", "Zero Year", and "Endgame". "The Killing Joke" is also a great, short, and definitive Joker story.
While "The Dark Knight Returns" is absolutely amazing and definetely a must-read, I don't know if I would ever recommmend someone starting out with it. It's very dense, the artwork is kind of alienating, and I think it plays out much better if you have some pre-existing knowledge of Batman as a character. I actually first watched the excellent two-part movie adaption of the book, and I think that helped me a lot when I finally came around to reading it. The book is definetely better, though, as there's just a touch more depth to it.
This is all good especially with the comic selection. I would also recommend grabbing Batman: The Man who Laughs which introduces the Joker after the events of year one. The first comics I’ve read so far are Knightfall, the killing joke, and the three jokers. Still looking for Knightquest and Knightsend.
Nice video, man. I would definitely advise jumping on to The Court of Owls volume once people have read your recommendations and continue through the Snyder/Capullo run.

Dark Victory isn’t technically a sequel to Year one
The man who laughs comes after year one, then Long Halloween and THEN comes Dark Victory, it wouldn’t make any sense if you read Dark victory immediately after year one

Spider Jesse the funny thing is that for some reason I’ve never read it completely. I read like half of it and then stopped. I recently finished the Long Halloween and it was magnificent. I was kinda disappointed with who Holiday was. I wish it was someone more exciting. I can say that I never expected. I wasn’t bored once. I rate it an 8.5/10
what about "Death of a Family" ?
You should read that as part of a read-through of the New 52 (which I highly recommend!) - it's the second storyline in the run, coming just after "Court of Owls". Do not confuse it with "Death in the Family", though - two totally different stories!
Actually, Dark Victory isn't a sequel to Year One.
The Long Halloween is the sequel to Year One.
Long Halloween -> Dark Victory -> Year One

The Dark Knight Returns, Year One, and anything related to his run on Daredevil are some of the greatest comics of all time. Skip everything else related to Frank Miller because that’s when he stopped being fueled by cocaine. If you want a good laugh read All Star Batman.

@@bharathnikhil2651 pretty sure it’s more likely he hates their sequels and All Star Batman and Robin. All of which are canon to Miller’s Batman
