    I’m 51 years old. I’m old enough to remember the metal cans, and they worked great. I’m so glad you made this video. FINALLY! Lol. I totally agree with everything you said and demonstrated, especially the part where you said “teach your kids not to mess with gas cans!” Freaking hilarious! I laughed out loud! To me, THAT is the root of our problems. You nailed it, man! We don’t need the government to protect us from ourselves, we need to teach Kids in school the right way to do shit, and acknowledge danger. Keep up the good work. I am definitely ordering the vents and spout. Thanks for sharing!

    Just a tiny detail... When you pour out the gas, insert the tube into the tank and THEN open the vent. That way you won't have any gas come out the vent as happened in your video.

    Yeah, they design a gas can that doesn't allow fuel to evaporate from the container, but makes the user spill 10% on the ground. That's probably 8% more in the atmosphere than would have been caused by evaporation for all the ones that are frequently used for construction and recreational activities.

    Love your video. My plastic gas can has developed some kind of leak and it has the older version of this spout, which is annoying as it inevitably slips couple of times as you push the spring loaded spout down onto the equipment. The sad part is that you end spilling fuel anyways.
    I now need to replace it and was searching for reviews on RUclips. It seems that now they have come up with a fancier pump nozzle that will probably break in a year or two. They are designed that way so that we keep having buy stuff more often. Thank you

    Best idea of all....Buy the new SureCan. The hose is attached to the BOTTOM of the can. The fill spout can be loosened to serve as a vent.
    One general suggestion for all of these - metal and plastic....fill them ALL the way up. When it gets HOT outside and your can is in the heat, liquid expands much less than the gas that is left in your can if you stop before it's full. This causes the can to expand and in some cases deform. When the can is not full, crack the vent open to prevent the can from exploding (or imploding when it gets COLD). Just be sure that nothing is open that would let water in.
    Also, if you're using the gas in a small engine (chain saw, weed-whacker, lawn-mower, chipper, etc.) use ethanol-free gas. It's more expensive, but you won''t burn any pistons like I did a few years back. Corn was meant to eat, not burn in place of gas.

    The biggest issue with that 'new fangled' spout, is to release the lock and then place the spout to enable flow. Try doing that with a 5 gallon can - lifting it into position etc. close to impossible, especially as some fillers on cars are recessed, and the lock resets while you are jostling for position! I did the same as you, removing that dammed trigger lock, as it is not needed, but I refrained from adding a vent. BTW I have a small can just like your older one, with a pull-out spout in the cap, that I use for my 2 cycle fuel for trimmers etc.

    Damn man, I'm sorry. I know I don't have to apologize but I feel I need too. You see I was borne in
    California 80 years ago. My father and grandfather were also borne here and in the time my family lived here this state has degenerated into a nanny state from what was a state a man could live in and do business on a handshake. What happened was people started pouring out here from other states and we lost control. So I would suggest that if the same thing starts happening in your state make sure you have a well-armed welcoming committee and have a friendly discussion about your values and how you feel about things and how you don't want your state to become like California. I bought a five gallon can just like that about three weeks ago. At first I thought they had corrected all of the problems safety cans had caused, then I pored gas on my truck. Yep, I said on. As soon was pouring the gas in, the pressure that you have to put on the push spring caused the spout to pop loose from the screw cap. The first time using it and the gasket that keeps it from leaking is ripped because there wasn't enough surface area to hold the pressure of the nozzle being pressed against the filler hole.

  • @davedecker8969
    @davedecker8969 4 года назад

    Problem with your aftermarket vent. As you noticed, because the spout doesn’t flex, and you have to turn the can upside down, gas will come out of the vent until the gas is below the height of the vent you added. That makes a big mess for the first timer, and seeing the error of the added vent. For it to work, you would have to put the vent on the bottom of the can, do when the can is flipped to dispensed mode, the vent is on top. Sounds like the right idea, but the ergonomics of the can and fixed spout make it a sure fire way (bad pun) to soak ones self the first time you use the added vent. It is a great design if you switch to a flex spout so the vent can stay about the level of the gas in the can.

    Hey I’m not sure about those plastic containers. I like the ones you push the button when you go to pour. You just have to burb it upright to let out pressure before you pour. Because if you don’t you might get splashed by gas. Now I don’t mind getting other plastic containers and installing those vent plugs but the button one gives you more control. I’m thinking of getting several Valpro metal gas containers. Nice video

    I literally just switched out 4 brand new Midwest 6gal cans (the can in your video is a Midwest) with vents and the old style spouts 2 weeks ago. HATE the new carb cans. So much easier to deal with the bendy spout when filling up my truck in a rest area (towing travel trailer). I have 4 of the old Rubbermaid cans too. If you buy aftermarket spouts, the thread spacing is different on the Rubbermaid than on the Midwest just FYI. Keep your female piece that attaches to the can just in case the spouts off Amazon/EBay don’t fit. Great video! I literally stumbled on it tonight lmao

    They used to all be vented but I think they were made illegal in 2009. Problem is if it is involved in a fire in an attached garage you will have insurance problems if you have a vented container. You can file the gas can away with washers that don't wash, lights that don't illuminate and maybe worse of all chemicals have been dumbed down so much they don't work.

    I would say that the old style plastic cans were better than the old metal ones because the plastic cans could keep the gas fresh for a longer period of time without the need for Stabil or some other preservative. (and the plastic did not rust or leak from the spout as much as did the metal ones...)

    The best vent idea I have seen is using a valve stem for a car tire
    Just remove the valve stem core and screw the cap back on.
    It requires a half inch hole as well,and feed it through the neck with a metal coat hanger or something equivalent to it.

    • @dzlfreek
      @dzlfreek  5 лет назад

      Alcohol in the fuel will make that option both too labor intense and short lived. In theory, it makes total sense. readily available at a plethora of locations and relatively inexpensive. But the difficulty of installing a valve stem from the inside and the fact that modern fuels are gonna turn it into mush, IMO, makes these plastic vents a superior choice. I like how youre thinking outside the box though!

The other day, well a couple of months ago, I was putting fuel in my bus so I could move it to a fuel station and I put 15 gallons in my bus tank and holding those suckers up is a very large challenge for a 66-year-old fat woman. LOL but I did. The 5 gallon fuel cans also has those little lips that you have to position correctly to put on the edge of your fuel opening to pour the diesel in your tank. It took a long freaking time. So all of my fuel cans on this property is going to get those little air breathers added to it.

    Those new gas spouts are the biggest joke ever. They don't seal, pour or do anything it was designed to do. They fall apart and dissingrate instantly. I got a free one and threw the spout away, made a disc to convert to a simple cap. I use that one for storage or to fill cold machines. I'm glad I have kept all my old gas cans.

    I have a old blitz 1 gallon that's still good but I switched to metal eagle and justrite cans after all the carb compliance garbage they are a bit more money but not as much as you would think a 5 gallon eagle metal can is around 30 bucks shipped

    i agree on both sides of the scale with out vent is better for filling weed whackers chainsaws trimmer u tend to loose more fule on the ground with a fast flow...............................but as to filling a car or bigger engine /rideon lawnmore nothing worse than gulp gulp gulp gulp etc so its a debate for the user to their needs just my opinion good video tho

      I agree with you but we have no options. We have to keep out government out of out business. It should be left to the guy filling up whatever he is filling to determine whether or not the nozzle or spout is right for the job not our government. We can probably agree that no one is filling a chain saw with a 5 gallon can. I have a small spout for filling my chainsaw. It's no longer available since these new spouts are forced on us. So what this new spout has done was to halt future gas spout designs. Imagine now the cost to meet a standard just to make a few bucks on a spout that would be optimal for the application. The government is telling us what light bulb we can or can't use. It's our decision, the consumer who decides. New bulbs cost more and don't meet their longevity claims. They have no competition so it's what we are stuck with. California shouldn't be telling other states what they HAVE to do. When this gas spout thing came out I looked in Mexico and Canada for the old spouts and they also comply with California's spouts >.

    *I used this on my 2006 Troy Bilt Pony (MTD) tractor **Bestfor.Garden** also recommend it was an easy swap. It's very light aluminum and seems sturdy enough so far; I assume you really only need to replace the idle pulleys once so if these wear out anytime while I have the mower I'll update the reivew.*

    I think the spouts should have 45° bend down half way out. Straight spouts have to lift can too high to start flow, spilling gas.

    Metal gas cans were great, issue was people left them outside to rust and break apart. If you had them and stored them in the garage or shed where no rain or moisture got to them, they would last virtually forever.
    Its no different than leaving a car or lawnmower or motorcycle or anything with metal outside ... the moisture in the air will destroy it over time.

    If you put the nozzle into the tank (before modification) (the end of the nozzle) below the level of fuel in whatever you are filling no air can get into the tank, no fuel leaves the "can" Vent at one end with a spout and nothing on it at the other, is the way it should be,

    • @dzlfreek
      @dzlfreek  5 лет назад +1

      maybe so, but it still take forever to get the fuel out if the can. Leave it to engineers and legislators to over complicate a very simple concept.

    I just bought the Midwest Gas Can @ Harbor Freight for that TaxFree Hurricane purchase. I recall a friend buying a large gas can @ Walmart with similar pouring spout. We did not understand how to use so found an old can, poured it in and gave the new can away. One video showed these new spouts pouring gas out in the area where that push-button is. I will have to test this on the 2-gal I just bought. I may have to use your Re-Design. Why don't these manufacture company can't figure a better solution if they watch users describing how Horrible they Spouts are made. Thanks for the video.

    Im 59, I bought one of these at local parts store I did notice the nozel contraption but of course in a big hury, stoped buy the gas station unscrewed the nozel stuck the gas pump gun in the can hit the trigger and shot gas all over me my truck tailgate and everything else with in ten feet of me,.after a few choice words I looked in the can and there was a plastic screen with holes so small you couldn't shine light threw it im thinking buy now maybe I should have shoped around but a guy on the other side of the pump came walking over with a screw driver and a hammer and a smile he laughed and said your troubles have just began.

      Those cans are a bomb soon as gas warms up from coming out of the ground it expands, and on a hot day it is even worse.

    Plastic gas cans used to be $5 for 5 gallons and they worked. Now they are $20 and need fixed before they are usable and several dollars in spouts and vents to even approach the utility of the prior cans. Maybe the gov't can pass a law and fix 'em ...

    I found the kits for gas cans that has the vent and the flexible hose at Menards very cheap I bought 2 of those kits some or those new plastic gas cans leak where you screw the nozzle on the can and it don't make any difference how tight you tighten the cap it still leaks

    Try a "VP Racing Sportsman Container" at Cabela's. The five gallon container carries 6 gallons?? According to them you can dispense "feeds, pellets, and liquids, including automotive liquids". None of the junk to slow it down, works just like an old jerry can. I can empty 6 gallons of diesel in about the same time it took you to empty the one gallon of water.
    I really enjoy your channel. My skoolie doesn't have quite as much rust as yours, but your videos have a lot of great information by someone who actually knows what he is doing. Keep up the good work!
