About what was expected, absolutely gorgeous environments/visuals, so-so gameplay I will say though, that music/atmosphere doesn't even make me want to attack the headcrabs, it makes me want to be one with nature and thus be one with them... if only they wouldn't attack my face.

The moment he jumped on the ramp and got caught on that Barnacle i realised that they actually put thought into the level design. Its not just a try to remake the game. Its something new.
Is this really the source engine? I mean, this engine was first released in 2004, and I know that it has been upgraded many times by valve... but look at what black mesa's devs been doing with it. It so beautiful.
Can you imagine Blizzard saying "Sure you can remake Diablo 1 or Lost Vikings, we'll be proud of you and let you sell it on our platform"? What about EA? Square Enix? nintendo? That's why I still love Valve. This is absolutely awesome for them to encourage fans doing what they (for some reason we might not understand) cannot do themselves. And props to the Black Mesa team. Such dedication deserves the great treatment.
i like how it actually looks like the scientists have extensively set up shop on xen, in regular hl1 you'd see the odd miniature outpost or a couple computers laying around but this one looks like they've been there for a while now, which based on the lore they have. it might diminish the significance of the alien like environment at first with so much familiar human tech and architecture around but it suits the universe better than hl1's rendition
I really like Valve. They are always ready to encourage their fans to remake or mod their games as much as they like. 👍 Square Enix is the worst when it comes to fan games. Don't know why they feel threatened by fan remakes. They have shut down so many fan projects in the past.🙁

And unlike the rest of Black Mesa, Xen is being reinvisioned and hardly even looks the same as the original Xen, the rest of Black Mesa has very similar connection to the level design of the original Half-Life this is a completely different story. So I can understand the long wait.

They were able to get to Xen before the Resonance Cascade, it was a secret program ran at Black Mesa. Questionable Ethics for example shows more experiments that are pushing the edge of technology.
Looks like a rare case of feature-creep that was actually seen all the way through to the end. The visuals of this section blow the entirety of the rest of the game away. And I don't think the change of location was the sole reason for that.
I played Black Mesa when it was a free mod back in 2013. I can't believe it took them 6 years to work on Xen. I heard they added a few extra levels before that too, but still. 6 years.

It’s impressive but they heavily upgraded the engine specifically for this game, so it’s not that unbelievable that the engine can run this.
10 million times better than the Xen port mods. The level design in fact surpasses the average level design of every Half-Life game combined :)

The multiplayer mod for _Just Cause 2_ still stands, to say the least. It even has a store page on Steam.

Back in the original I did not know you could long jump and I did rocket and Grenade jumps instead. I thought that’s what the game wanted me to do.
the long jumps were possible using a Long Jump Module players get at the near end of Lambda Complex, when we gear up before the teleport starts up
