Hannah, it's not the thread. It's the fabric.
Looks like stretchy fabric like Jersey. You have to sew it with an elastic stitch like zigzag or an overlock stitch or with a serger. If you use a normal stitch, the thread will tear. Love from Germany

Or use a double needle for stretchy fabric. You need two spools of thread plus the bobbin thread. Then you will get a straight stitch on the right side.

For the first flip when you want to sew elastic fabric you should change the feet of the machine into a plastic one or put a paper on fabric and sew on top of it and the rip off the paper🥰(sorry for my English it’s not my mother language)
Some days all sewing flips work, some days just one. It's happened to me as well, sometimes you have to sit back and take a breather from it. Lovely finished flip.

The skirt turned out so good!
My little tip of the day is to always try on the skirt before you sew the pocket shut. And sometimes I don’t even sew the pocket shut so that way I always have access to the space incase I want to easily change the size. 🫶🫶🫶

Hey Hannah, you can try putting paper like newspaper under the dress while you sew it(where you sew it and you can tear it off after sewing if it works) and there is a specific needle for specific clothes.

I can relate to that so much, I love that so many people enjoy thrifting for the environment but all those "vintage stores" are just second hand shops that are way to expensive only because they sound cool and have some brand stuff : D

Just a little idea, but maybe you can sort of attatch a button next to the 'end' of the elastics next time, and then make some holes in the elastics so you can just tighten the elastics how you want by using the buttons! That way you can make it more tight or loose depending on the day or what you're wearing, etc. I do it with my flowy pants so I can wear a sweater with them that's tucked in, but also just a little crop top! (I"m not a native English speaker so excuse my mistakes haha)
