Bobby Darin is one of the best, & Mack The Knife was his biggest hit. This version from The Ed Sullivan Show (which was on at 8pm Sunday nights, from 1948 until 1973) is THE best rendition I've ever heard!! Bobby had several hits before Mack, & several after. My favorite is Artificial Flowers. Beyond The Sea & Clementine are also great!!! So are most of his songs. Sadly, he had major health problems throughout his life & he died in 1973 of heart trouble at the way-too-young age of 37. But even almost 50 years later, he remains one of the GOATs!!!
“Splish Splash”...
"More"
Bobby Darin had the "swag" such a natural rhythm...
Yes, Ed Sullivan introduced a lot of people for the first time including The Beatles!
Wow!! Another Bobby Darin❤❤❤. When I was very young maybe 3 or 4, I do remember this, I heard my Uncle (dear to my heart!) sing this all the time (and he was good!) When I finally heard it on the radio, I was outraged and yelled “Uncle Danny! He stole your song! 😡. He cracked up and laughed for a long time. I got a big hug for that ,lol. The sad part is that Bobby Darin died young, 37 I think and he had known from childhood that He would die young from a bad heart. I think he lived about 20 years longer than they expected. that’s why he worked so hard. Reminds me of Elvis working thru all his health issues. Bobby had to go back stage and suck on some serious oxygen during his performances. makes what he did manage to leave behind so precious. Thanks for doing this.
This and 'Beyond The Sea' are two of Bobby Darin's songs that are in constant rotation in my favorites playlist, and have been for just about ever, which is a long time, considering that I actually saw this performance on Ed Sullivan back in the day. I loved Bobby's show, too. Like the Dean Martin show, it was always entertaining in the coolest, most laid back way.💜
It’s wild that one was a famous German song ant the other was a famous French song.
@@catherinelynnfraser2001 damn I thought Bobby wrote em. Fits him well
Three words for the late great Bobby Darin.. classy, smooth and effortless
'Mak the Knife' certainly was a hit at the time & still is for me!!! Such a talented man with such a heart. I also love another of his songs 'Beyond the sea', just beautiful. He was such a lovely gentleman & so sad he was taken ill at the age 37, & had been for a very long time. He is still ace. RIP Bobby 💔💔
I always enjoy it when younger people react to these old songs!
What a great song~ such a great jazz sound to lyrics that are so dark! Thanks for reacting to it.
This song was written in 1928. In 1973, after failing to take antibiotics to protect his heart before a dental visit, Darin developed sepsis, an overwhelming systemic infection, which further weakened his body and affected one of his heart valves. On December 11, he checked himself in to Cedars of Lebanon Hospital in Los Angeles for another round of open-heart surgery to repair the two artificial heart valves he had received in January 1971.[1] On the evening of December 19, a four-person surgical team worked for over six hours to repair his damaged heart. Shortly after the surgery ended in the early morning hours of December 20, 1973, Darin died in the recovery room without regaining consciousness. He was 37 years old.[2][3]
Darin's last wish in his will was that his body be donated to science for medical research. His remains were transferred to the UCLA Medical Center shortly after his death.[3] RIP Bobby. The Ed Sullivan Show was a popular variety show that all artists wanted to appear on.
And no burial site… very humble and grounded choice for an artist who was said to be someone cocky in the early years.
I think his lyrics in ‘Long Time Movin’ sum up
Bobby’s thoughts about life and death 💔
When I was growing up, we watched The Ed Sullivan show every Sunday night. The highlight of my young life!
The Ed Sullivan Show was THE show to be on. It was on Sunday nights and was "must watch TV". Our family usually had a big Sunday dinner after church so supper was light and we often ate off TV trays while watching Ed Sullivan. A typical show had a comedian or two, a scene from a Broadway show, and several musical acts which typically included one or more for the teen audience and one or more for the older folks. He introduced huge acts to the US: Elvis, Beatles, Sly and the Family Stone, the Doors . . . even Carol Burnett got her first National exposure singing a comedy song on Ed Sullivan. He was so successful because he had a knack for recognizing what the people wanted, rather than trying to force people to like what he liked.
So smooth, been a long time since I listened to Bobby Darin.
Excellent song! Everybody was on the Ed Sullivan show. It was a great show to watch. I watched the Beatles on there.
One of my favorites! Darin was a classic!
Love the way he sang this song , it was just right🔥🔥
Great find Adogg! This is even a better version than the brilliant studio take. He won the Grammy for Male Vocal Performance. One of the best songs/arrangements/and performances ever!
The song is about a knife-wielding criminal of the London underworld from the musical named Macheath from 1928.
I thought it was called The Three Penny Opera?
"
Dude, it does my heart good to know you loved this song. Keep it alive my man! 👍
Ed Sullivan was huge! The biggest thing was when the Beatles performed on the show.
Lotte Leyna was the wife of Kurt Weill, the composer of this song. Today she is best known for her role as Rosa Klebb in From Russia With Love, the second James Bond film.
So cool, Darin was one of the greats. Didn't know what it all meant when I was a kid but still loved it. Ole Mack is back.
Ok, so I'm old. But I watched this the first time around! And you're correct- Ed Sullivan was the big dog!
Mack the Knife was composed by Kurt Weill & Bertolt Brecht for the musical Threepenny Opera (1931). The original lyrics were in German, but were later translated, and it became a jazz standard, sung by Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald, and others. The song features the character, Macheath, who was a murderer and head of a criminal gang. Nothing like a comedy.
He was so cool, had charistma and a great personality!
When you were on The Ed Sullivan Show, you had made the big time. This video is good, it's easier to understand the lyrics. But for that brass band, you've got to hear the studio version, it has much more impact, much brighter and sharper. You'll want to hear it. You could also do reactions to the Ed Sullivan Show, it ran for twenty years and showcased thousands of famous artists.
Spot on. This live version is good, but the studio recording is truly spectacular.
Ed Sullivan was a newspaperman who became the host of "Talk of the Town," which eventually became known as The Ed Sullivan Show. A staple on CBS-TV's Sunday night lineup for over two decades. The show was a one-hour variety show, with everything you could imagine from stand-up comedians to musicians to dancers to acrobatics to ventriloquists to dramatic scenes from Broadway plays. It was a little bit of everything. And everyone who was anyone appeared on the show. Sullivan had all the greats on the show in all the various genres and disciplines. He was the first to bring The Beatles to America, long before anyone else in America had really heard of them. He was a giant in the industry, and his show sat at #1 in the ratings for years and years, eventually settling into a perennial top ten position. Which is why CBS kept it in their Sunday night lineup for so many years (from the '50s through sometime in the '70s, as I recall).
By the way, there is a fantastic 1973 performance by Bobby Darin of "If I Were A Carpenter" on RUclips. It's live; he's wearing a pale blue dress shirt. Definitely worth checking out. Totally different from this. Sadly, it was only a few months before his death. He left us much too young.
The Show was initially called "The Toast Of The Town." It first aired in 1948. It was officially called the Ed Sullivan Show in 1955, however, people called it the Ed Sullivan Show long before that year.
Good looking and sings smooth and strong. THAT'S a star.
This one takes me back! It was one of my dad's favorite songs - he was always listening to it on the radio player. Very cool tune and fun watching you enjoy it too☺ Brings back fond memories🦋
TRIVIA: Johnny Carson's band leader Doc Severinsen (still alive at 96) played trumpet on that recording. Also the wife of the composer Kurt Weill was a singer named Lotte Lenya. And she was put into the song as one of Mack the Knifes victims.
Thanks for another Darin hit. I realize by watching him, he observed Sinatra for a while. If Darin was wearing a tux, you would've thought he was part of the "rat pack".
Ed Sullivan was a famous New York City figure who knew everyone. He was a newspaperman, critic, social commenter. His show was on for about 20+ years. It falls into the variety show which was very popular in the 50's and 60's. Sullivan could get anyone to perform on his show. In my family, we watched Ed Sullivan every Sunday evening at 8p.m. Much of America was doing the same. If you were new to the business, one appearance on his show meant you had made it. (Late-night talk shows have filled this bill for comedians.) Sullivan had just about every English rock group starting with the Beatles. And just as easily brought us Elvis when he first started out in the mid 50's. He even had the world's greatest opera singers on his show. Acrobats, dancers, comics, etc., etc. It really was a variety show.
I grew up in Toronto Canada and we were watching every Sunday evening too! Great show, had everyone on you could imagine.
The Ed Sullivan Show was Vaudeville all over again. When CBS cancelled him he said Vaudeville had died its second death.
Elvis Presley was introduced on one of the Dorsey Brothers’ show...not The Ed Sullivan Show...
Still love Bobby Darin...and I ALWAYS WILL!! ❤️🎶
Ed didn't get Elvis easily. Early 1956, Col. Parker tried to get Elvis on Ed’s show, for $5K. Ed famously turned him down & said he’d never have Elvis on. Elvis's career skyrocketed & just months later, Elvis was so big, Ed couldn't avoid having him on. Ed had to go to Parker, who strong-armed him into a 3 show deal, for $50K (bet Ed wished he'd paid the $5K). By the time of his 1st Sullivan appearance (Sep. 9, 1956), Elvis already had 5 #1s (on Pop, Country & R&B charts), had appeared 4 times on other national shows, was about to release his 1st movie (Love Me Tender, Nov. 1956), was signed for 2 more movies, while also recording (what would be more hits). By the final show, Ed had clearly changed his opinion of Elvis saying; “I wanted to say to Elvis Presley & the country, that this is a real, decent, fine boy.” “We want to say that we’ve never had a pleasanter experience on our show, with a big name, than we’ve had with you.”
Bobby was a gem. 💎 And it's about an assassin. 🥃
Love this!!! The Ed Sullivan show was the way to promote your talents, no videos those days, no MTV🙂
Bobby covered almost every genre in his 37 years. There are songs (great ones) which have never even been released.
Ray Charles and Sam Cooke were revered by Bobby. He apparently would listen to Ray Charles albums into the wee hours.
Bobby was amazing at swing.
Check out his 7 min long live version of Drown In My Own Tears.
That ‘One More Once’ line was also poplar with Sam Cooke and Bobby Rydell.
Bobby was good friends with Sammy Davies Jnr and Elvis too.
As soon as I saw you reacted to this I started singing it & snapping my fingers! We used to watch Ed Sullivan every Sunday night. This song is about a knife wielding criminal in London. He is being compared to a shark. First published in 1928, Bobby Darin's version, 1959, is the most popular. He is so suave!
This is from the musical "Three-Penny Oprea" and is about character Macheath, who is a knife wielding crime figure of the London underworld.
One of my 88 year old dad's favorite songs, and my dad loves music!
Fun fact, Mack the Knife is from Bertold Brecht's Threepenny Opera, about criminals and the underclass. Mack Heath was the antihero of the play who had a penchant for stealing and murder. This song basically introduces the character of Mack Heath to the audience.
And "Threepenny Opera" is a reboot of "The Beggar's Opera" from 1728.
It should be noted that he sounds that good using only a boom microphone several feet above his head. No tiny super sensitive mics right in front of his mouth.
You picked a great one. It’s a classic.
Sad that he was taken way too soon. Loved him!
Bobby was so smooth. Ed Sullivan had a variety show on Sunday evenings for many years. Legend has it that Mac the Knife was based on a true person out of St. Louis.
Mac the knife, definitely an old time Gangster.
Just had a thought of a suggestion for your reactions.. "singers who appeared on the Ed Sullivan show"
Loved him then and still love him now. He was the Greatest Lounge Lizard of them all (better than the Rat Pack). He had STYLE!
Good job! Totally agree with you on the vibe of the song. Curious what you thought of the lyrics? Lot of people get caught up in the jazzy performance, the way it builds, getting looser as he goes, that the meaning can easily get lost (which I think is the point, and why it's performed that way). Some are surprised to learn it's speaking, somewhat affectionately, about a Mafia hit man! 😎
You're right.
Mack was gangster Macheath. The women mentioned are prostitutes. It was sung in the Three Penny Opera of the 1920's which was taken from another opera in 1727. Macheath was a highwayman in that.
He didn't process lyrics yet..
@@finallythere100 After listening to reactions for a couple years, I've noticed that, in general, of course, men process musicianship before lyrics, and women process lyrics first, musicianship second. I have offended a few men with this observation! So I'm not saying one way is wrong and the other right, it's just what I have observed.
@@christinerobinson9372 - true, and especially with a first reaction, one focuses initially on one or two aspects, and then later puts it all together.. Like any other good work of art (movie, paining.)
What a classic....the song is about a killer. Ed Sullivan - everyone watched it Sunday nights !!! On CBS
If a performer made it on The Ed Sullivan Show that performer made it in their career. If Ed called him over after the performance that was the feather in his cap. It was Ed Sullivan that gave the parents of Elvis fans the okay to like him. After he called Elvis over after his performance and told everyone, "This is a very nice boy." Elvis was quite respectful and always said "yes, sir" and "no, sir" and was thankful to be on the show. When Ed had the Beatles on his show that helped to seal their popularity in the U.S.
That’s one of those songs that if it’s on my car radio when I reach my destination, I’ll wait until it’s over before I shut the car off.
There is gold in the soundtrack from What Women Want. ❤
Song of murder and a killer . Great Bobby Darin just kills it!
The Ed Sullivan Show is an American institution. It was a variety show that aired every Sunday Night for more than 20 years.
Now that you've watched Bobby Darin perform this, watch the lyric video. I think you missed that this song is about a killer or mob hitman? When the shark bites (the knife stab), scarlett billows (blood), wearing gloves, cement bag for weighing down a body, someone disappearing after pulling a lot of cash out of the bank. Mack the Knife is back in town!
No lyrics but the best and jazziest video of Bobby Darin performing this song is here:
ruclips.net/video/4jcCwmtVAIM/видео.html
LMAO!!! I use to watch my brothers imitate Bobby Darin. Love this song!!
thats always been a great tune . thanks 😊
There was a movie about Bobby Darin, starring Kevin Spacey. Spacey did his own singing.
Loved his song "Clementine" as well
Now that was smoooooooooooooth…….
Fun Fact: I was born the same day that Bobby Darin died. Same day, same month, same year - and I was born 4 minutes after he died. I actually read his death certificate and compared it to my birth certificate. He died at 12:15am in Los Angeles, which is 3 hours behind Eastern Standard Time. I was born in Ohio at 3:19am. Taking in the time difference that means that I was born 4 minutes after he was declared dead. I always found that strangely fascinating.
P.S. - we need some more of your Steve Perry reactions! I humbly have a suggestion for you. Steve made a video in his home studio in 2020 during Covid. A Beach Boys cover of "In my Room." He was 69 years old when he recorded it, and it's just him and a microphone. That's it. No instruments. Still so much talent, though he seemed a bit out of breath - perhaps fighting off a cold or something? nevertheless, he still sounds great, especially for his age and having no instruments or technology assisting him in the video performance. At the end of the video, just before he shuts it off, he whispers "hang in there" as we were all in lockdown at the time. What a sweet man to give us his talent and a kind message when we all were in need of positivity - especially considering how notoriously private he is in his personal life.
I'd love to see you react to that. I have the link for you. It's a short video, less than 3 minutes long. I hope you enjoy:
ruclips.net/video/Lv0HvKcSuLw/видео.html&ab_channel=StevePerry
Darin had so much talent, we lost him way too soon.
Absolutely wonderful 🎉 Thank you 🙏 for this ❤👵
I remember Sunday nights, Ed Sullivan show was must see TV.
This is one of the few records I bought in High School.
Was just a little kid when this came out would love to hear a band do a cover of this song mind you you they'd have to be damn good 🇨🇦
I got to stay up to see the Beatles on Ed Sullivan! I love, love ~~ COOL BOBBY~~~
Back in the day when BD was top of the charts we went to dances every week. Often more than one. We would either do the Fox Trot or Swing Dance to this song with a lot of 😏
The Ed Sullivan Show ran from 1948 to 1971 (23 Years) - Elvis - The Beatles and 100's of the most famous artist of the time were on the show.
Classic Bobby Darin ❤
It's swing!! You were doing it.
Y'all be safe.
Listen to his "If I Were A Carpenter." Great song.
Good one, Adogg! This was a great recording for how old it is.
awesome..smooth..and those horns!
Ed Sullivan was a variety show. He would have a mixture of acts. You might see Elvis, then a circus act. LOL We all saw the Beatles for the first time on American TV on the Ed Sullivan show. The whole family was gathered around the TV every Sunday night.
If you got on Ed Sullivan you had made it big!!
Great tune !!
Elvis, the Beatles, Michael Jackson and the Jackson 5, Creedence Clearwater Revival, The Temptations, Diana Ross and the Supremes, Marvin Gaye.... All the greats!
Another great one is, Once Upon A Time.
Very good but Ella Fitzgerald and also Louis Armstrong owned this classic. Armstrong does a great version in a London concert circa 1957, worth a watch. Ella does a great version circa 1965. Darin had a heart attack and died young.
Ed Sullivan was like The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson,if you were on the show, you basically had it made!
The most up-tempo song to murderousness until Sweeny Todd by Sondheim. This is from a work by Kurt Weil called "The Three Penny Opera" which is about the worst part of society and crime! Ed Sullivan was on for many years and everybody who was anybody appeared on it from classical ballet to circus acts. First to present the Beatles too
I love this song, outstanding song about a serial killer!!! Wow!
Gone too soon, RIP. he had the hit, Splish Slpash
Salish splash is song you will enjoy
This would be described as crooner music. He also made a few movies 🎬, He met and married Sandra Dee ( a teen sweetheart 💕)
The biggest hit I have ever heard about a serial killer ;) Cheers.
I'm sure I've heard this song in gangster movies.
I love his somewhere beyond the sea.
This is basically about a killer that kills people with a knife -
One of his best hits.
Only song to make a murder sound good.
once again! love it
I can't help but think by your steady smile, you didn't get that the song is about a cold-blooded murder by a pimp. (Mack is what the French call a pimp.)
U gotta take a listen to dean martin non dimenticar or “its now or never “Elvis . Keep up ur great videos tho 🍾🌴
My go to Karaoke song!
This song is about a killer.
Mack was killing people!
"Splish, Splash, I was taking a bath...."
Ed Sullivan Show was THE show of it's time....
Ed Sullivan brought The Beatles to America.
~~ Cool Bobby! ~~
Every one watched The Ed Sullivan show on Sunday nights.
Mack the knife is a hit man for the mob
Fantastisch
