      I think they need to take away the red fill-up bar - it would completely break the immersion for me. The enemy's attacks should be well animated enough and have a sort of wind-up to give you an indication of when they're going to attack, and you should have to adjust on the fly, like in Dark Souls. Also, mix the timing of the enemy attacks up more. That's my 2 cents...

    • @macro3751
      @macro3751 Год назад +33

      @@Frosty_tha_Snowman i mean to be fair, the windup bar is all over the place in action MMOs, i'm really just glad this is an action mmo and not some "click to auto attack and then use skills"
      though you're right that a noanced windup animation on the enemy itself would be a better choice, and really it might not even be that hard to switch

    • @Frosty_tha_Snowman
      @Frosty_tha_Snowman Год назад +9

      @macro3751 Yeah, just because it's used often, doesn't mean it's a good mechanic. I think Runescape is the pinnacle of "click and wait" combat, because of all the stats, prayers, tactics, and rng that goes into it. Most other click and wait combat formats just seem dull in comparison, in my opinion

    • @macro3751
      @macro3751 Год назад +9

      @@Frosty_tha_Snowman fair, me i never much liked that style of combat if i'm honest, independent of how much you add to it it still always feels boring
      i think to me it's mostly down to how, in the end, the attacks and skills are all just graphics
      arrows, bullets, bolts of magic all just, turn around midair to track perfectly to your enemy
      swords or daggers hitting even though the character wasn't anywhere near them to get hit
      it all just feels way too fake, like none of what i see is even actually happening
      while a more action oriented RPG usually (though not always) has combat systems that feel more believable, where you gotta be up close if you want to hit with a sword, where you can dodge roll out of the way of an arrow if you're quick enough
      i'll say i can totally see removing the red bars and in their place just put flashier animations as a cool change, but one they they do need to maintain is the action focus, if combat is gonna be a focus of the game, i personally believe click and wait shouldn't be what they ultimately go with, in like, any capacity
      but maybe that's just me

    This has that "learning a game engine" vibe, but as if the dev actually tried to do a good project. It feels like instead of jumping from one thing to another, they actually tried to polish whatever they added. Like, sure, the animations are very rough, but they play when they have to, they don't bug, and they portray what they have to portray. The fighting mechanics are simple and boring, but they are consistent and don't bug. So at the very least, this guy is actually learning to make a game, even if slowly. Props to them

Though you definitely hit home on some good points. I could nitpick about some things that were missed, but I can see your being quite honest and real about the experience. You obviously are being quite helpful and nice here. If you missed anything, we should aim make it more obvious with game design. After some more work, hopefully we can get that rating up higher. 😃

      Just from watching this video and not playing myself, a system where you get rewarded for successfully doding or blocking, like lets say "after a successful dodge, your next hit stuns the enemy for 2 sec" would make it feel very rewarding or even act as a combo for the player. But I also wonder why the 2 hand weapons don't have a parry ability. I feel bad for josh having to dodge so many times xD I know it's a work in progress game, but combat is the core of this game, so why not go deeper into that, before adding anything more like map design or crafting. If it's true that most people haven't even finished the second quest like josh said. Anyways, cool to see you playing all the way trough and giving them some good feedback. Was very entertaining :D

    Its actually really heartening to see a project like this start off so small-scale. It means the dev is actually trying to lay down some solid foundations and not just rushing ahead to the "add a bunch of cool mechanics" bit. They could even find some very solid market footing in the idea of a mini-MMO, which isn't really a concept I've seen. I'm interested to see where this goes in the future, it could easily be a really solid game.

    • @cyqry
      @cyqry Год назад +18

      This. As a game developer myself, I can tell you that its very easy to create too big a scope, get overwhelmed and either fail or give up.
      Its ambition that kills most devs because they don't know their own limits at first and they either learn the hard way or they don't learn at all and keep making the same mistakes.
      When I was at university I saw far too many projects hit this problem, everything was too big, too ambitious, and they struggled to get it done in time without a teacher telling them to cut off big chunks of their ideas.
      This dev seems to understand that. Its an early access game after all and you really don't need a huge detailed map to prove that your idea works or a wide variety of enemies to prove that the basic combat loop works. Hell its an MMO, they're kind of based around the concept of 100s of the same enemy being present in one area to farm anyways so I'd say the dev has his genre nailed down pretty well already.
      Like Josh said, its a good foundation to build off and I can only hope the dev does so because he's shown a good approach to development. Making an MMO, even a small one, is a huge undertaking for even larger studios so to see one individual making a pretty solid demo of sorts is a sign that they understand the process well and just need a team around them to help the workload.

    WoW (at least at 3.3.5 and before) uses pool system. Essentially, there's about 120 ore deposit points on any given location, but only 40 of them can be active at the time. So while respawn-timer could be as low as 3-5 minutes, if you are the only person in a location, you might mine that ore in one spot and sit there eternally without seeing it respawn. Because that 40th ore deposit rolled at some of the othery 79 available spots.

      meaning that the Defias camp in westfall would if you killed them fast enouth and there was a lot of player there would speed up its respawn timmer from a few min to a few sec or if everyone was there farming Defias Pillager for a crafting pattern or something... que them spawning as soon as you aggro them.

    The map icon rotation is due the map being just a camera looking from high up on the sky. The camera is set up to only draw the scenery and icons, but the icon objects actually exist on the world and are anchored to the objects they are part of.
    It is a common way of doing things in simpler games because it means it is super easy to put different icons for each kind of object.

    • @KroltanMG
      @KroltanMG Год назад

      @RatAlgorithm Yep but that's a nonzero amount of work, game engines have the concept of "parenting" objects to one another, and it is trivial to do that instead of having a separate object that copies the rotation along only some axis.
      It is indeed totally solvable, which is why most games with minimaps don't have this issue. It's just that the naive way of doing it has these side effects.

    • @NaudVanDalen
      @NaudVanDalen Год назад

      @@KroltanMG Isn't making a separate object that looks at a few variables easier than making a child object and then deleting 99% of the code until you're left with just the axis?

    • @KroltanMG
      @KroltanMG Год назад

      @@NaudVanDalen You seem to have a misconception about programming: not every thing in a game has a copy of its own code, it is made of other preexisting pieces of code. Parenting is a behaviour that basically "every" element in a game has, and the engine handles all the transformations for it automatically. You cannot simply select the map icon and erase the lines of code that handle rotation on other axis just for it.
      What is usually done instead is instead of parenting the map icons to the objects they are part of, like the player, you parent them to a "map icon holder" but store a "hey i should be above this guy" value. Then every frame the holder looks at its children (the icons) and copies the positions of the things they are associated to to them.
      It is not a complicated piece of code at all to write, but it is yet another piece of code to write. In game development you have to prioritise how you spend your time, because if you want to make it "perfect" then every feature takes an infinite amount of time. The devs likely did the trivial thing just they had something minimally useful and moved on to implementing other things. You can see this utilitarianism in the game design and other features of the game too.
      Also, as I said, this naive way makes it easy to add a different icon to each kind of object (player, NPC, etc) by placing the icon inside the object it indicates. Since generally objects in a game are grouped in "recipe files" (in Unity they are called Prefabs, in Godot it's Scenes, in Unreal it's Blueprints) that tell what sub-objects an object is made of, it is easy to manage the icons for each thing by just opening that thing's file and adding an icon to it.
      If you go with the more complicated way I mentioned above, you either need yet another piece of code that moves the icon from the owner to the Holder when the recipe is baked (yummm analogies) and deletes the icon when the owner is deleted, or you need to store the "kind of thing"->"icon shape" table somewhere else so that the Holder can "listen" to objects being created and check what icon they should have, if any.

Mabinogi has a huge history and 70% of the content is content-creeped to all hell and can be broken with modern day skills and equipment. Mabinogi is a horrible amalgamation of underpowered content and unfairly designed end-game content.
      Also: How far away from west coast USA will affect your gameplay. I'm on the east coast and dual guns fire with a delay. Making a game like this as a solo developer is such an unbelievably massive undertaking. And to get this much seemingly working fine, with only minor quirks and apparently no major bugs - is rightfully cheered. It looks to have a smooth frame rate, and while the online interaction with other players seems bare boned or even non-existent, just getting another person on screen with seemingly synced animations and movement is no easy feat either.
    I'd hardly blame someone for wanting to start off with something fairly generic in terms of questing, combat, etc. Getting *something* done, just to have a baseline and the experience to do it, makes for a good way to learn. When people want to get into making games, oftentimes the advice is given to them to simply start off with Snake, or Tetris, or some other easy game. A distinct, known quantity. It eliminates so many variables and lets an aspiring coder and designer have a singular purpose. So I feel like starting off with making a bare bones but functional MMO is very smart. I do sincerely hope the dev continues on and builds something more unique.
    This is also the kind of game that I'd have a lot less issue financially supporting than, quite frankly, the majority of the other games you've shown on this series! Obviously if no further results are gained and the dev ends up resting on his laurels, I'd withdraw the support immediately. But showing this level of base competence is a good sign of things to come. Let's hope they keep going forward with it.
    Outstanding review as always, Mr. Dry Face! I hold you in very high regard when it comes to your integrity in reviewing things fairly and appreciating context. Cheers!

One thing I didn't see you mention was something to make you care about what you are doing too. Like why do you care about these quests? Tying a larger objective into the smaller ones can sometimes be a decent carrot to toss in, and can be very light as far as impacting gameplay (like the area changes so it's less monstery or you get more when gathering x resource).

    So about the Minimap thing; when I was in a game programming class in Unity, we made minimaps too. Basically, you just have a top down camera, attach an arrow or symbol of choice to your player, make it invisible to all other cameras except the one above you, and boom. That would explain the tilt thing; since it follows the movement of the character, leaning back would tilt the arrow back too.

  • @jandroxyz

    For the minimap icon pointing up. I believe what is happening is that each player game object has a plane attached to itself, and that is what is being rendered from the top down. So when the player model tilts up the plane will also tilt up. Then the camera render from the top down sees the plane as tilted and not flat.

    I reckon I can explain that part where rearing up on your horse alters your mini-map icon. It's likely that part of the make up of a player character is that icon, and it's set to be rendered only in an overhead camera used entirely for the minimap. The main game camera only renders the player world, but the minimap camera is waaaaaay above the game, rendering only the basics and map icons attached to each element of the game, including your character. It's a pretty quick and dirty way of getting map elements like this to work so they update in real time.

It has a very unique character development, offering an almost endless variety of talents and combinations for them. The combat system is basic, centered on parry, blocking, or dodging, but it's heavily influenced by your character build and playstyle. I think that a lot of the issues with this game could be sorted with more intelligent and fluid AI. With games like this all I can think of is that I'm fighting a computer and not an actual enemy. They don't strafe or dodge your attacks. They don't take you by surprise or gang up on you. All of the enemies just run up to you and will happily stand in place taking damage until they die. A good example of what I'm taking about is when attacking the bandits (14:50). They all seem completely oblivious to you being there. Josh smashes one in the face and kills them clearly in the eye line of the other enemies and none of them seem to care and that just makes it seem fake.

      The problem with "just adding" group aggro is that the enemy attacks need to be designed around it. I doubt it's very complicated to do otherwise. Also, MMO enemies often have variety without actual AI by choosing different attacks at random, so fancy logic isn't necessary in many cases.

      Fair point, this probably is specific to the early game.
      But I do find that a lot of Josh's criticisms in this series are things I see in other big MMOs, specifically WoW, since that's what I'm most familiar with.
      It's not a huge deal, but it's definitely something I notice since he tends to hold those games in pretty high regard.

      @@jotarokujo3603 it is more of a what the initial impression is like. I think joshs 6-8 hours per mmo for a series is very generous considering the average time it takes for many to determine if they wanna keep going is the first 2 hours.

    Honestly, this is exactly the kind of thing i love to see, and why im a huge fan of indie titles. I saw another comment that spoke on how it seems like the dev is making a thing, then making sure that thing functions as well as possible, then moving on. I love MMOs as well, and i love this series, but this game is definitely going to get a download from me. Even with it's issues, like you said, it's clear the developer cares, and that this is a project worth following to see what it can become.
    Also, having a cash shop that isn't just a pay to win thing is something that should absolutely be supported as well. If i made an MMO I'd do something similar. "You want to support me and buy stuff? Here's cosmetics that you don't need to have an edge on the game beyond other players, but still support me and my project"

    One thing for each weapon to help with combat.
    Staff: sacerfice health to make a totem to draw agrro.
    Bow: allows you to walk and shoot
    Hammer: a knockdown that acts like an interupt
    Shield: interupts target and has a shorter cooldown that the hammer's knockdown
    Axe: when you dodge an attack you can continue you attack combo

    As much as there is so many things worth criticizing in this game, can I just say for a single developer it actually looks pretty good and appears to be competently made despite being very bare bones. Kudos to the developer for pulling this off as is, imagine if they were given better resources.

    Unfortunately, after this review dropped the game took a very sad turn.
    The game dev did implement the material collection suggestion you presented, but they also heard the trolling idiots in the discord and turned the game into a grindfest.
    Now weapons can only be crafted or bought by the vendor at the beach and jungle and the rarity is forcibly locked into common. Gems, a feature added after this review, is what you use to upgrade the rarity now. Gems drop from enemies and have a 0.5% to 3.5% dropping depending on the gem rarity.
    Now there is no more stamina, rolling or enemy level scaling. Get Squire shirt and pants and the minotaurs barely tickle you. Don't and you will be bttfked.
    There's barely two or three players online and even when I monopolize all of the server's material spawns I still don't have enough to craft due to shitty enemy material droprates. When I need to kill 15-20 boars to get barely enough raw hides to craft one processed leather and a fistfull of coins to upgrade the weapon I have, things are going to the shitter.
    Finally, they completely revamped the feel of the game by making all areas be in early morning time. Now more spooky bandit village or forest.
    A game that had potential but now it's set back by the suggestion of idiots who want to turn it into Ryzon.

    in these kind of games try to log out, then log back in for the resources to respawn. i think it is quiet cool that i can for example use 2 magical attack, then i pul out my hammer quickly for a third big attack with it. i think this mechanic is unique, interesting, and can be implemented to an interesting direction - like the hammer's third attack may depend on what weapon is used twice before it

    That talk about students and class made me think. So you were talking about how students tend to stick to what they know, and that’s for good reason- it’s an inherent flaw in school systems. The way grading works doesn’t encourage trail, error, failure, and growth from that failure- if you do poorly on an early assignment because you took a risk and did something new, that will drag your grade down for the rest of the year. Learning and becoming better at that later will not erase the impact of that early failure.
    Essentially, schools only reward success, not _growth,_ not actively learning. That’s why cheating is rewarding, and why students stick with what they know- branching out has high risk for absolutely no reward (or very little), because students are incentivized to get high grades on assignments rather than learn. It’s about the numbers, not the process.
