I was the editor and one of the shooters for this project. I was blown away by the immense talent of the Bluecoats bugle corps which I'd not heard prior to the shoot. The band did about three takes and at the end of the one we used, you can hear the drum corps practicing across the street. TYS are dear friends and they often take the self-effacing route, so I'm glad this video stands as a testament to their skills as writers and virtuosos. Go buy their stuff. Thank you for featuring them!
Life long Drum Corps International (DCI) fan since the 90s here, - Do yourself a favor and just periodically check into what DCI is doing. These kids learn a music routine, learn a marching routine, learn marching cadences and parade formation tunes that will move your soul. Thank You Scientist struck gold with teaming up with this esteemed corps and the production team they did, when they did.
So a lot of people told you about Bluecoats. They area DCI world class competitive drum and bugle corps. The reason they did this with Thank You Scientist is because the Bluecoats used a few TYS songs in their 2017 competitive touring season show. Just look up Bluecoats 2017. They play TYS AND Frank Zappa in their show.
Ha! I don't know how I missed this. TYS is one of my go to bands for smiles. I stumbled on them during Portnoys first Prog Cruise in 2014, carpeted mosh pit and all. They are always a blast. Good review. Good times.
I also had to pick my jaw off the floor after hearing this. Wow! The only thing I know about this band is I heard a few songs several years ago. My loss for not keeping track of them. That was incredible.
I discovered Thank You Scientist not too long after Jinjer. I was stuck deep in the Jinjer rabbit hole and this was the first thing that managed to drag me out. I almost feel like they are opposite sides of the same coin with Jinjer - Jazzy technical riffing fused with heavy rock/metal - but with each group approaching it from the opposite direction. It’s my favorite thing to put on now when I need something light but up tempo. Definitely check out more - you can’t go too wrong with their catalog. Oh, one thing - the guitarist is a monster with fretless guitar. Check out songs like Terraformer, which might be some of the best fretless guitar playing I’ve ever heard.
The "special thanks to Def Leppard" is a nod to the shorts the drummer was wearing (the Rick Allen Union Jack shorts). As you mentioned in your reaction comments, these guys definitely have a good sense of humor. Great job on the review!
Loved your reaction and analysis. What a fun video indeed! I saw TYS along with Haken in a small club several years ago in San Francisco. Wow, what a show filled with so much energy and joyous musicianship. This band was so tight, yet they left room for so much improve an crowd participation. Thank you for this one!
Bluecoats are a long time member of Drum Corps International I believe, a Drum & Bugle Corps. The crazy thing is that most of the backing musicians on horn and percussion are teenagers, you age out at 21 years, so they have not even spent much if any time in professional music schools. The home where I grew up was near a practice field for one of these Corps and they practice all summer long. They are typically a marching band, so having them back a progressive band like Thank You Scientist is awesome. Had to look up Thank You Scientist. You are right they met in Music School and list Frank Zappa as an influence. FXMLDR = Fox Mulder with XFiles influence. Thanks for fun and educational reaction as always.
I really appreciate your comment and your experiences, that sounds fantastic. Just FYI though, the Bluecoats are not quite "typically a marching band" - DCI and "Marching Band" have a different restriction on instruments, primarily woodwinds. Additionally the music is significantly harder than what your typical marching band would do. DCI has been rooted in "progressive" music with radical time signatures and rhythms and chord stacking/progressions for as long as the organization has been around (1970s). Teaming up with Thank You Scientist isn't just awesome, it's a melding of two very like minds.
Bluecoats are a competitive drum corps that competes in DCI (Drum Corp International). Their show varies dramatically from year to year, but think very, very good marching band, and that's a start, but only a start. I believe they're limited to 22/23 years of age, mostly university students.
i wish i could find some music or something for the brass parts to this, i want to play this real bad. tys is my fav band too, along with the bluecoats being my favorite corps.
oh, you’ve come across an amazing group of dudes 🤘🏻🔥🍻 I saw them back in ‘15 after they had signed onto Claudio Sanchez of Coheed & Cambria’s label (Evil Ink Records) & opened for them on tour. such a sick show & their albums are so eclectic & intricate it’s insane 🤯
love those guys! funny you mentioned them being from burkley because i wanted to suggest Aviations - Outliers to you. Those are all burkley trained musicians doing a major job and compositions

Zappa was definitely an influence. They are for sure underrated, and should be bigger.

Reminds me of The Mars Volta in some way.
you know its an incredible recording when its almost 10 minutes long and it still feels like it ended too soon
