There were no photographs or social media back then lol, so people would only know the face of someone they have personally met. Most people (especially if they are commoners) wouldn't recognize king edward because they never actually met him. It would be very hard to recognize someone you only saw from a far or in a painting (that could even be not completely accurate and that I bet commoners had no access to
