I started the channel doing some of these "thoughts" sorts of videos and am enjoying making them again, sort of every other month. Let me know if there are themes you're curious about. I'll bet I'm curious about them too.
Thanks for watching,
Keith
Love the line..."you're among friends and everyone takes a turn, Lean in and sing like you mean it."
Great advice. It's the only way to let go and let it out.
What inspires me is seeing other guitarists play things I don't know how to play, in person. It makes it seem possible.
All good ideas and some I’d not thought of. The biggest jump I made in my playing was a circle jam in Kentucky. I was a mediocre picker at best and so I showed up to see what was up. It was a condition of sitting in there that you had to prepare tunes. That gave focus to my playing at home, having 3-5 tunes ready to go was demanding but it meant my technique had to improve. I had to seek out tunes and listen to how they were played, not just read the chords. I learned tricks like sleeping on some lick, and it somehow improved my playing overnight. In a couple of years I got to where I could hang with the better pickers and I was passing on tips and encouraging new pickers. Shortly after I moved away one of the leaders passed. He left me his bass. I’d never touched one and it was a puzzle to me why he did that. On reflection I realized that I was frequently covering the bass line of the tune, and he knew it would help my technique, which it really has. So there’s at least three of your tips in my short journey. I miss those folks and I’ve been known to take the long drive to Kentucky to sit in with them. There’s always something to learn from them.
As someone who is only 7 months into my guitar journey, I find this video, like most of Mr. Five Watts videos very inspiring. Whether it be this topic, or a video about an amp I will never be able to afford, down to a '59 Les Paul. I am always looking forward to the next video. Thank you Keith and crew.
I have been moving to Nashville and have not had my guitars for a few months. You have inspired me to hurry up and get them to my new home!! Besides, if you cannot get inspired to play in Nashville, where can you?
Hey Keith! Have you ever heard “Jazz Sabbath”? I think you’ll like “em. 😊 I’m goin’ back in! Lol
thank you
As a former musician who missed his shot I struggle trying to get back in it. Now father of four, very involved with his kids and career in hand, I miss the stage. I miss the music. I’ve wasted so much time buying gear looking for the right tool that will bring it all back in one night yet it doesn’t. Time is limited and there’s always something to fix, clean, volunteer, etc. you get it. This video hit home. I just need to pick up my guitar, get back to my vocal rehab and play. Thank you 🙏. Keep it coming especially for us dads who devote most of their will and time to their families yet are trying to find time a little time for a passion they once had. Blessings!
When the time is right, you'll get it back my friend! Don't lose hope and by the way you sound like a fantastic father and husband!
It’s frustrating but I think that’s also part of the process. We can create habits and systems to facilitate it but we can’t manufacture it. I really love his first tip about seeing live music. Covid got me out of the habit of seeing multiple shows a month but when I do it still feels like magic and I miss all the stupid simple things about live shows, especially in dive bars like I used to play. Are your kids interested in music? That can be great for all of you and even little kids love banging on things.
You’re like the Carl Sagan of guitars; always inviting, searching, studying and inspired by the wonders that are waiting to be found :)
I read that in Carl Sagan's voice...
Similar stoic cadence
I`ve been playing the guitar for more than 35 years and always feeling, I have not become a true musician yet. Now I hear you saying: "From the 2nd lesson on you`re a musician." Thank you for these words.
Thanks for the inspiration here, Keith. (And thanks for the shout-out.) I've been thinking about taking up the mandolin too.
So many great tips, as always. During my time of being a musician, which is nearly 90% of my life, I’ve haphazardly, or consciously employed everyone one of those tips and they all work. I always appreciate your work and that’s also part of my inspiration. Please keep the installments coming.
Picasso. That was a good fit. Yes our surroundings can be overlooked. As I went back listening to my recordings from the '80-'90's. I realized everything was in a 'walking' tempo. In Minneapolis the City of Lakes we walked miles almost everyday with our dogs and kids. Now driving trips dominate my travel time. And, no surprise the tempo has picked up. Along with the scenery variations between the desert SW and the north woods I notice distinct musical tendencies. I miss Lake Superior & Dylan country. Gone but not forgotten. Thanks Keith.
This was probably one of the best music videos I have ever watched. As a guitarist of, going on 59 years now, I needed some inspiration to get my engine started again. So with the passing of musicians I had listened to in my younger days, like Petty, Orbison and Lightfoot, I started learning their songs and it has been a wonderful jump start to my playing again. It keeps me young, sharp and happy! Thanks for the reminder Keith!
Nice one Keith! Been a while since we had a "heart-to-heart" on the channel and I really enjoy it when you dig in to the little things that make playing so much fun! I am sure I am not alone in hoping that we all get an proper introduction to that Collings to have showing up soon :) Cheers, friend!
Rick Ruben's book "The Creative Act" is another book that may help one find inspiration.
Seeing Jeff Beck Live kept me on a natural power high for several days. One definition of the word is take in the spirit. Mick Goodrick told me to take a walk in a beautiful park and pretend Im a guitar. I think there are as many places to find it as there are wonderful things in life.
Keith went beyond what I expected with this episode. Great video!
Thanks Rafael
Another great Five Watt World. Thank you for the great and well thought out content Keith. Best wishes to you
Great concept - I like it! You gave me a lot to think about. It is interesting where inspiration comes from and when it shows up. I dable with song writing and am not close to a professional. Your comment about getting out and listening to music really resonated. I have come home from a concert really motivated. I also find listening to new artists and genres can also have that effect. Well done (as always)!
Hahah! Keith 15 minutes drops the bombshell. Expecting some photos in my inbox OF
It arrived late today. Pics to follow tomorrow. “Many Bothsnd died to bring us this information.” Comes to mind. Many current guitars are being sold to move to these Collings guitars. (Not a paid endorsement…I wish!) :)
Just bought a used 2017 Martin Custom Shop HD28, 3 weeks ago and it's caused me to do something I've never done before. Play an acoustic over my electric guitar rigs. I've got Orange Marshall and Magnatone amps and somehow this simple acoustic is taking all of my attention. It's a killer guitar. I had a high end Taylor I never jived with but this Martin changed everything. Trying to tackle bluegrass now. Kinda neat what a new guitar can do for a player
Inspiration can come from anywhere if you know what to listen for.
I mean Tom Morello's influences were 80s hip hop music.
@@harrisontownsend910- True. He is the band’s DJ, but on guitar. Tosin Abasi took inspiration from a bass player, Victor Wooten.
The shower is my "think tank." I frequently will stand there, with my eyes closed, and just exist in the shower. I have written a few songs in the shower. My problem is that information usually gets deleted the moment I step out of the shower......
I also remember one morning when I was half-asleep. In almost a dream, I watched myself play an entire set. Of course, that information got deleted the moment I finally got out of bed......
That is my problem. The music does come, but gets deleted the moment I exit whatever I was doing......
Based on all my music heroes from rock and jazz: it’s heroine, copious amounts of heroine :,)
😂 good one
Copious amounts of courageous women?
And when you think is enough, add more 😂😂
I went through a span of several months where I didn't write any new material for my band. It wasn't a big deal because we have enough material to play for 90 minutes, but our sets were becoming stagnant. My amp bit the dust at our last show, so I went out and got a new-to-me amp to replace it. Upon bringing that amp home and plugging in to it, new material just started coming out of me, seemingly out of nowhere.
I'm a firm believer that every song that can be written exists somewhere out in the ether. Sometimes it takes something to change your thinking to help you uncover that piece of music. If you look at things from the same perspective for too long, you can't see anything new. But this amp changed how I "look" at things, and I became able to unearth these new songs.
Great!
Now im looking at Collings guitars, thanks again 5 Watt World ; )
Throw on The Last Waltz and Rollin Thunder Revew and on gassed for about a week or two.
JOMO - This I can get into. I’ve had such a mixed bag with guitar playing. Long, boring story but, I want to get back into playing and learning. Not sure what the obstacle is beyond making excuses. Mental, all mental. Nice work as always 👍
What makes me pick it up sometimes is like chasing the feeling of my last positive fix. 😊
Thanks for the love my friend!!
Thanks for being such an inspiration Jeff.
I always find it inspiring when I click on 5 watt world. Taking lessons is such a great suggestion because there is always new things to be learned. Keep up the good work!
"...chance favors the prepared mind."- Louis Pasteur
Yes, this is a different kind of FWW video. Philosophic. The music starts out a bit slow. Listen to what is being said and learn something new. It is well organized/written. Never seen Keith without a beard before. Reference to Zen thoughts. Well done video. I was looking for the instrument videos and stopped here first. Glad I did. Keep up the good work, sir.
Thanks Mike
Jackson Browne piano songs are a fantastic source. I prefer him on piano anyway, but trying to play guitar chords like he plays piano has been my goal for years.
Wonderful suggestions and video.
Inspiration.., move Me brightly... " J. Garcia "
Probably some great reverb in a marina, though... 😉
Another way I've found inspiration is the seemingly weirdest of things. You never know sometimes. Nature, walks... even in an office. I was walking down a hallway and there were random patterns on the wall. I kept a steady walking rhythm, tapped every time I walked past one and that became the rhythm for a tune!
Growing up, the mandolin was in every tarantella. What's this Bluegrass of which you speak... ? 😂
A perfect meal with all the right courses!! I've been away. Wonderful to feel home on your channel. And to see my Gibson Sitting Next to My Taylor!!! That pairing is the team of horses I am hitched to on stage. The Gibson is a 1964 J-45 I have played since it was new. It is now better than new. My Taylor is a 214-CE and set to perfection. Just all of is is Golden Truth, from Jeff to Guthrie and home groups near by, I have the same blessings in similar folks. Your wisdom works, and so do all of us who share what you share so freely. Oh... my 5 Watt hoodie was great!
Great video! Different guitars can make you play different things so I'd say guitars and gear can inspire you. But I think you're essentially saying the same thing where ultimately the inspiration comes from within. That part made me sit and think for a while. =)
I had already decided to learn the mandolin, it is arriving tomorrow. Exciting to think that it will help my inspiration on guitar. Love your videos!
What took me from a kid who knew G to actually playing songs was jamming with fellow novices in the college dorm. We taught each other the few songs we each knew, and the patterns started to make sense.
Great Topic ! It's either Mark Twain or Confucius that said ...“Find a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life.” ... and so the consistency must bring you inspiration ...
i like that; most music 4 the least gear. "95% perspiration / 5% inspiration". Btw; finally got a Silverface Champ .. an export unit made just 4 us Down Under🇦🇺.

Second instrument?
Grade school with the Alto Sax'
3 years of going along for the ride.
Tried to be into it but always wanted to play guitar The 'squeaks' were me.
Didn't think could do both but an older school guy did just that.
I'll just call him Matt B. This is '71.
Always carrying his sax around. Next thing i know, He's playing guitar with a pro keyboard player down the street.
He was good.
ha, later faves Rory Gallagher and Robben Ford did the same thing.
In actuality it was Jimmy on mandolin for Battle. It was Going To California where Jones played mandolin, and That’s The Way too. I know it’s not such a big deal but wanted to set that straight. Excellent video Keith. It’s all about “the hang” and putting the time in to actually show up together and attempt to make music together. Listening to EVERYTHING you come across is important too. There’s something in everything that you could take and reuse. Music is as recyclable as plastic or water. A renewable resource. One time I was coming offstage (we had an outstanding covers band for twenty years together) and some kid asked “how do you know how to play like that??” I told him “get the first five Zeppelin albums, the first five Queen albums and the first five Aerosmith albums and listen to all of em….get a Fender Precision Bass and then try to play along with all of em next.” That’s how I found my voice on rock bass playing. It’s where I cut my teeth. Those guys taught me about the instrument.
I loved it when you admitted that you were “inspired” by the Collings. Beautiful guitars. I was able to take a quick tour when I went visit my parents. One of their neighbors works there. I was inspired, but my bank account wasn’t. 😂
13:26 And!!! Always write it down!!! Lyrics disappear…like a dream. (I call that “dreamnesia”) 😊
I was always the most motivated to create, or practice, in the morning……
On the drive to work 😢
Luckily I work from home now, so, if I’m feeling feverish, I can clock out and play for a few minutes!
gotta admit, I love this video. Would love to see more of this kind of thing on the channel! In my own experience, I felt the 'intermediate plateau' for like 10 years or so. I could write music but my skills hadn't really grown much and I found myself playing more of the same thing and same kind of thing over and over again. Recently I decided to take lessons again for the first time in over 10 years and holy smokes I'm glad I did. I felt inspired after only a single 30 minute lesson, and I'm looking forward to taking more and learning more about the instrument. Cheers, great video.
Thanks for this. One of the best things I have found for inspiration is to listen to other musicians, especially ones who play music I wouldn't. Luckily living in London I can go to the South Bank and listen to buskers covering everything from the Beatles and Stones (plus, of course, the Kinks as a lot of them are within walking distance of Waterloo station) to Taylor Swift or Ed Sheeran. Last night I went to the Eel Pie Club which is a bit of a trek for me and this Friday I will go to the blues club round the corner from my house. It's as important for the musicians I've seen and will see in the future because the audience inspires the players. I know people coming along inspire me when I play gigs. Also, if you go to a small venue you may get to talk to the musicians and can give them encouragement. We can all help each other and by going to gigs we keep live music going and hopefully keep venues going as well. We've lost too many of those in the last few years.
Keith, excellent discussion. Thank you for your insights.
Sometimes a new pedal is like playing a new instrument, the feel, response, mysterious sound. You could be plunking away on that same guitar you always are and all of a sudden, you click a switch and there's this symbiosis going that wasn't there, before. Had that experience the other day, my fingers bounced off the strings and weird things happened that hadn't happened before. The circuit into a new realm was complete and weird, wonderful new music fell out. So, gear can make a difference, BUT, also love the gear you're with.
That video was very inspiring for me, thanks for that! As funny as it may sound, when I am in a undecisive mood and think I should try some stuff and practice I hear Master Yoda in The Empire strikes back: There is no trying, do or do not! In 95% I do, the other 5% is take a walk and enjoy the nature and their sounds. And when I come back I do with a fresh mind.
"Risk doesn't really exist, but we need a label for the lack of guarding one's self. If guarding is negative then risk is positive."
That i30 that Guthrie is playing must be an early prototype. Aside from not having a guard, it has no fingerboard binding and the strap button is on the horn. i30s in production have white bound boards and the strap button is on the back like a ES335.
Inspiration isn’t the bus, it won’t just show up because you wait for it.
Grab your guitar, sit/stand.. whatever and play until it sounds good.
I love that you suggest learning another instrument. Since starting my guitar journey, I've taken up both bass and piano. The piano helps me understand theory a bit better, and the bass has really helped me see how guitar fits in to a bigger picture, and how to play differently on guitar to allow room for a bass. Learning both has only helped me appreciate and enjoy learning guitar.
Really enjoyed it, two of the points I discovered earlier in the week. Started messing around with the drums and tweaked an amp setting on my ten year amp this arvo. Good job Keith.
Really enjoyed this one. Thoughtful, pleasant and meant for adults. Keep it up.
i much prefer smaller gigs, sound is way way way (keep going there) better.
Fantastic and much needed presentation. Thank you, brother 🙂
A Parker Fly ? .... oh why oh why did I part with the instrument ? I didn't understand it , I'd understand it now.
Try making a Joe Satriani guitars video. He has a rich history with Ibanez and many ties with Steve Vai, as he was his actual teacher.
8:41 I was going to say play a ukulele and then you brought up the mandolin. Ukulele, I think, would be better. 😊
Thanks again Keith, I put off watching this one for a few days and not sure why, I think it was likely because it included a lot of things that I needed to hear, turns out I was right, and that's ok!
I just finished a project. It was all I thought about for months. I’m idle now Waiting for the next… inspiration.
Connecting with accomplished artist is the best way however, many are self righteous and cantankerous.
Fantastic video Keith! I really enjoyed the tips and can vouch for many of them from my personal experience too. I did learn a few new things and will try to put them to good use. Thanks!
it will probably make you happy to hear that I really enjoyed this video and picked up my acoustic for the 1st time in a year and a half, and inspiration started flowing. Great job, as always, Keith
"An inspired notion must then be developed, no matter when, where, how, or for how long."
You should do an episode on hagstrom guitars. They're amazing
great advice, as is to be expected from this channel - but the beard looks great, keith
Every time I watch one of these it’s like I get to hang out with the cool uncle I didn’t know I had.
Great video, as always, but glad to have one that talks about craft and not a particular piece of gear.
I can’t tell you how awesome it would be to just sit chill and pick your brain
Let my Inspiration flow. the opening line of Terrapin Station.
Keith, how about the History of PRS Santana guitars.
"Inspiration, move me brightly"
For one moment I thought I saw Seinfeld in one of your old band photos
My true inspiration comes in worship of Jesus. Bless you.
GAWD I love that hunter green Parker Fly!!!lol
Try alternate tunings and listening to a wide variety of different music
Steve was great in the first Police Academy movie
just changing the tuning even for one string opens up all kinds of voicings
Love what you have to say here. I'm inspired.
The JOMO segment was brilliant!
What a fantastic video I feel inspired watching the video have a good weekend Keith
Very good video. Picasso was an inspiration.
Excellent video, inspirational.
TRY ACCUSTIC SLIDE, ANOTHER WORLD.
Another great video....very inspiring! ;)
This is one of the best guitar channels on RUclips.
Thumbs up jus for the naval quote
If you have a multi effect, try something else.
Great video. Saved to watch again and again!
I almost bought it hook, line and sinker Mr, BTW Mine is arriving on Friday. LOL My life is extremely complicated right now, I didn't think it was supposed to be at 71. That thing you had to deal with that got you moved back here, me too. Medical stuff, also me too. I think I also forgot how to listen to music?!? How did Leonard say that, the first the fourth the fifth minors fall and majors lift the baffled need to figure it out before they can hear it?? I could always call GT or Uncle Larry. Your friend Liz has the same last name as mine 8) I think I need to stop watching these so late at night.... Er, or so early in the morning. Thanks Keith, really appreciate you!! 8) --gary
Nice Gary I hear you, and adding the Collings is part of the “who am I as a guitarist?” Many other guitars are leaving to have this one arrive.
I’ve been not inspired to play for about 4 month already. Playing for about 15-30 min per day, and most free time spending on my phone or sleeping. After I stopped playing, I felt like nothing inspired me at all, I didn’t want to even get up from the bed, I felt terrible ALL 4 month. Idk what was that thing, that made me quit for that long. Now I’m slowly retiring, and this video really helped me with finding the right path. Hoping, that at the end of this month I’ll learn at least 3 new songs from start to end :)
There you go!
Keith, dude I'm a 68 year old guy on my wife's phone and I just have to say that this was one of your best videos yet! Thank you for the gentle reminder that inspiration hits you when you least expect it. Going to go pick up my 71 cherry sunburst Les Paul Deluxe and see what happens.
I love Deluxes, :)
Great video. Thanks
