- Public Sector Productivity: A Four Day Week?
Director of Research Iain Mansfield appeared on Radio 5’s Stephen Nolan show to discuss demands from a civil servant union to move to a four day week - on full pay. He argued that with public sector productivity still lagging well below pre-pandemic levels, this was unlikely to improve matters - and that the taxpayer should not foot the bill for speculative experiments of this nature. If civil servants really could do as much in four days as in five - which was doubtful - then this pointed to a wider culture of weak performance management in the public sector; the priority should be to drive up productivity across the board, not to bake-in lower output.
They should make them work six days just for the sheer cheek of this and bring in 30p Lee with a big drum.
6th day is unpaid
