You have to have a valid license to own a car and the car has to have valid insurance to be on the road. If you don’t have a valid license and insurance you simply cannot drive on a public road. It’s illegal. Usually they say “I have insurance, it had just lapsed. I didn’t know.” Yeah, right. It might be a good idea to keep a stack of driver manuals to give them, or at least the website link.

I wouldn't even let my best friend borrow my car "indefinitely." You have it for this amount of time and that's it. Needless to say, he got even weirder and I ended up ghosting him.
Usually you’ll get a court fine and have to pay sr-22 insurance, chances are she didn’t pay the fine or was busted again without insurance so her license was suspended/revoked- I’ve never seen someone lose their license if they correctly handle the lack of insurance fines/get correct insurance- it actually happened to me in my 20s and I’ve never not been able to register a car subsequent because I followed the required steps handed to me.
In my state that's relatively new. Within last two years. Before that it was just like judy said. You could go in, show you got it, then they would drop the ticket. This case was filmed years ago.
The defendant enabled someone who was not supposed to be driving to drive. If the plaintiff had injured or killed someone, it would have been her fault. So, yeah, defendant is no prize.

The plaintiff should blame the grandson, not her friend. I believe she sold the car for two reasons 1) To avoid entering into more serious problems in the future just because her name is attached to the car (if the car hurts or kills someone for instance, as Judge Judy said. 2) She was obviously angry she had to pay to get it out of impound and there is no guarantee the friend would have agreed to pay her back that money. On the other hand, if the grandson is an adult, he should take responsibility for driving the car without permission and causing the plaintiff all this distress. Above all, it isnt right to break the law.

You can get your license suspended for failure to maintain insurance. Where I live every insurance company is obligated to notify the DMV if your insurance lapses for more then 30 days (they normally do it 60 days for you to catch up) and the DMV will suspend your license automatically. It happened to my roommate in college. He got stopped for a traffic offense and when they ran his license they found the suspension. He got three tickets, one for the original offense, driving while on a suspended license, and failure to maintain insurance. His passenger had to drive the vehicle form the stop. He had to pay the tickets, a fine for the suspended license separate from the ticket, an extremely high prepaid premium for car insurance, and a reinstatement fee for his drivers license. It was quite expensive. It's not as simple as a process as JJ makes it sound. And if you fail to correct the suspended license the suspension can become a revocation.
