Many landlords think it is free money . What about change of ownership?

Thank you for your comment and for raising an important question regarding security deposits and changes in property ownership. It's a common concern that many tenants face, and California tenant law has clear guidelines on this matter.
Under California law, your rights to a security deposit are protected regardless of a change in property ownership. The responsibility for returning your security deposit (minus any lawful deductions) transfers to the new owner of the property. This means that if you're entitled to a refund of your deposit when moving out, it's the current property owner's obligation to return it within 21 days after you vacate, along with an itemized statement of any deductions.
If your landlord or the new property owner fails to return your security deposit under these terms, you may have grounds to take legal action to recover your deposit.
Please feel free to reach out. Have a great day!
